Last night I sent a some text messages for bed and I had 28 conversation threads in the default Android message app on my Charge. This morning they were all gone. I simply put the phone down last night and let it go to sleep. I did not power off the phone. This morning I received new text messages which created new threads but all my old messages are no where to be found.
I went to the Verizon store and they have never seen this before and had no solution. My theory is somehow the database that contains the messages is either corrupt and unable to read part of the database, or it simply is gone. I did nothing on my phone that would delete these messages.
So far I've tried:
Restarting
Power down and restart
Power down, remove battery, and restart
What would randomly cause my message database to be deleted or become corrupt? My phone is fully updated with all the software updates Verizon has pushed.
I have an app that backs them up to my GMAIL account and now I'm researching how to retrieve them that way but I would like ideas on the cause and if there is something I can do to get them to comeback form within the phone without having to download them form the internet.
I am very technical so please ask me if I may get you more information.
Thanks,
David

Hi DavidSandwisch,
I can relate to your concerns as I use my text messaging feature all day and loosing messages must be very inconvenient. As indicated by out store representatives, I have not seen this issue before either. I'm glad to learn that you have a back up copy online and you will be able to get your message back.
I understand that you use the native messaging application and while Verizon Wireless does not support/recommend any 3rd party applications I would like to share (and recommend) that I personally have used Handcent (free from the play store -market-) for years and I have never experienced any issues with my text messages. Please note that this is a personal commendation and not one from Verizon Wireless.
Although I cannot guarantee that using a different application will resolve your concerns, I trust that if you try the text messaging application I personally use (Handcent) you will not experience any further issues with your messages going forward.

This JUST now happened to me and I've had my Charge since it came out 2 years ago. I have been using Handcent for just as long as well and I have checked the stock messaging app as well. ALL my text messages have been deleted and I have no idea how it happened. My mobile data was off too so I doubt that there could have been any update to my phone that could have somehow affected this. I don't understand and I'm quite upset.

If you have important messages get the APP "SMS Backup & Restore." Among other things it has a SEARCH feature.
Also make sure you set the message feature as to how many threads it will keep. Mine is set at 50.

I do use SMS Backup & Restore but just have not backed up for about two months. Also, my thread count is set to unlimited. I just still don't understand what caused everything to be deleted overnight. With the amount of text messages I have it would have froze my phone like it usually does when I start deleting things manually, but it just completely wiped them without draining my battery or having to use the mobile data for any updates my phone may have needed. I don't get it...

I can tell you guys know what you're doing BUT take one more look at Messaging>Settings and re-check those settings. If "Text Message Limit" is set to low and if, at the same time, "Delete old messages as limits are reached" is checked it's the end of the line for all those messages.
Just a thought.
