Sorry, just saw where you've tried to exchange it. Well, I'd wait for a new one, I doubt you are going to get anywhere with that phone in the shape that it appears to be in.

Thanks Geri O. I really want to like the Droid X, but right now my old BB Storm is looking good. It rarely went below 50% battery charge, and although it would freeze up, it would do so only once a day or less. I'm gonna try the exchange and see if that works. I really hope so.

I just noticed a thread about how USB charging isn't as effective as wall charging. Maybe I'll get another wall charger for work. I've also read on the Motorola website that charging without using a Motorola charger may result in reboots. Any validity in that?

It sounds like you might have a bad battery. Also, the USB charger will not charge once you get down below 15%ish.

All the issues with resets and low battery sound exactly like issues with the battery. Try giving it at least a good 8 hours of solid charge on the wall charger.

I have noticed that while on the USB port charging my phone's % has actually dropped while I've used it. This is due to the fact that the USB port cannot put out as many amps as a wall charger. Which is a separate issue from the 15% problem.

(Hopefully I can get this in before the Nyquil kicks in, LOL)

You know, an off-brand charget did cause my daughter some trouble with her Droid before I (!!) ordered her an OEM charger. And it always worked fine for me until I gave it to her, and she promptly lost the OEM charger and bought a generic one from a convenience store. I think rebooting and poot battery life were the symptoms. And they subsided when she used the Moto charger. I bought, like, 8 of them on ebay for $12 or so apiece. It is certainly worth trying before you return it.

And yes, the Droid X doesn't charge well via USB.

If it went that low (5%), I would give it 12 hours on a wall charger (made for the Droid X). Some of these third party chargers just don't have what it takes to recharge a Droid. And actually, if you are using a third party charger, you may void your warrenty.
But I agree that your troubles appear to be coming from your battery. I would certainly look into that possibility.

1. Your issue with charging is because you are on Mass Storage option instead of Charge Only which is causing the system to try install drivers for Mass Storage that you havent installed yet, the drivers for 2.2 is diffrent than 2.1 drivers and you have to install the drivers, this would explain also why your issue is when you plug into a PC you notice this.

Try dropping down the status bar at top and select SD Card > Charge Only and this will stop the error until you install the drivers.

2. I am guessing that when you hard reset you did not disable the Automatic Restore option under Settings > Privacy >Automatic Restore because if you left this checked the issue will automatically restore itself onto the device after reset.

I was able to exchange my phone this afternoon. And it's now been almost six hours without a random reboot. (I had about 15 reboots on the old handset today.)

So far, no problems with the new phone...and the battery has been amazingly good tonight. I've used it most of these past six hours and the charge has dropped only 20%. I've only added one app - for corporate email, and will be adding more one by one.

Glad to hear you got it straight, make sure your first week or so that you give it a lengthy charge each night. These batteries are not supposed to have a memory, but if you run them bone dry before a good initial charge it can ruin them.

Definitely follow the battery advice listed before. I charge mine nightly and usually on my 45-minute ride home from work, I'll put in on the car charger (which, contrary to what has been said here at time, does indeed charge the phone as well as the home charger) for the ride home and it's nearly fully charged by the time I get home. And try to not let the battery get lower than around 20% before charging it again. This will help both its ability to keep a charge for the maximum amount of time and and its lifespan. Depending on your usage, you might consider getting the extended battery from Verizon. I did and it was a big help as I wear out the data part of the phone, plus our shop being in a 1 to 2-bar signal area (solid connection, though), so I do work the battery out pretty well.

Quite glad to hear you are finally having a good experience with the X. I've had mine since the day the X came out and except for a minor hiccup here and there, it's been nearly perfect (I don't use the hotspot feature, so I haven't experienced the disconnecting issue that Wildman and some others are reporting). I hope you find yours nearly perfect as well.

It's been over 14 hours without a random reboot! And with average use, I'm at about 40% battery. Had only one hiccup with the internet connection - it stopped midstream, but that happens on my laptop too. I'm still a bit cautious about adding apps, but I'll read details and reviews carefully, and add apps slowly. Thanks again for all y'all's help and advice!

Make sure when you add apps to give them a day or two before adding another that way if you run into a bad app it's easy to ID which one was bad.

The biggest problem is apps are made and tested on 1 or 2 phone types, so it leaves many phones that it could have issues with. Also when you deal with Android Version changes it seems to cause all sorts of problems. Something that ran fine on 2.1 could be a deal breaker on 2.2. That's one issue I really hope that the Android OS fixes in the future. Future updates should at the very least be backwards compatible with older apps. I don't expect a phone with 600mhz processor speed to handle what the 1ghz does, but I certainly expect the 1ghz to more than handle the 600mhz apps. But then I'm sure it is more in depth than that.

Something else worth adding to this -- I never download APPS if they (1) haven't been downloaded more than several thousand times -- just to make sure it hasn't been causing problems on other peoples' phones.; and (2) I stick with just the MARKET apps - never going to off-brand application sites .... It's worked so far for me to be a bit (overly) cautious ... I've had no problems with my DX for over 2 months now. I also don't run CPU-drainers like Live Wallpapers, moto blur apps, non-stop GPS or WiFi, etc. I turn things on when I need them, then off again. Good luck ...

Why does everyone always blame 3rd party apps. I follow the same basic rules when adding apps. read a bunch of comments and check to see how many downloads it has had. Get all my apps from the market. I know many people with the original droid and they have the same apps but none of the issues. Ever consider that it`s as simple as motorola and verizon who took the froyo os and incorporated lousy programming. I have done multiple resets and have pulled my battery so often that the battery cover doesn`t secure properly anymore. lol. The 2.2 was pushed 2 months ago and moto has already stated that it created more problems than it fixed yet here we are 2 months later and not one single fix released. I know there are many who don`t have problems and even more who have just gotten used to the issues. I just find it hard to swallow that the only fixes stated by most is wipe out the phone and start from scratch and don`t install apps. Why design a phone with so much room to install apps but tell everyone that apps will cause instability? Why would a bunch of apps work fine on an original droid but have problems with a cutting edge phone such as the x was designed to be? On this site in order to fix the problems its reset your phone and don`t install apps but on motorola`s site its restore the phone and install 3rd party apps that will allow the user to listen to music or use the camera? The problems in the programming on the phone and not so much in the apps. Every android phone that has 2.2 on it is having different issues and i don`t think its all googles fault.

You missed the point. On this forum its erase apps to solve problems with your x. on the motorola forum its add apps to solve your problems. In other words on this forum if your having a problem with your 3rd party testing app were told to delete it and use stock testing app but on the moto forum when people have a problem with the stock app the xperts say to install a 3rd party app like handcent. No one wants to put the blame where it lies. With a lousy os. Motoblur and verizon's garbage is causing compatibility issues with the x. The great thing about android is having the ability to download apps to extend the usefullness of the software already on the phone. Unfortunately many apps that work just fine on most android phones work like crap on this phone. Real hdmi is an app that I enjoyed before 2.2 but like alot of apps that I enjoyed before. I no longer can.
