Contacts are saved but not showing up

When I go to enter a new contact I go through the usual steps, add the name, the number, etc. and then click done where a box appears and says "Contact Saved" When I go to send them a text message in the actual messaging app and type their name in it appears, but if I go to the actual contact list in my phone their name is not listed. What do I do to get them to appear?

You may need to make sure you have set up gmail on your phone as this is how Android backs up your contacts to Google. Make sure it is syncing by going to settings<accounts & sync> new gmail account should display, if not tap on "add account". If it is there, tap on the gmail account press menu and tap on sync now

I have my gmail account sent up and all of the options to sync are checked and i clicked sync and it did but still none of my recent contacts that i added are showing up
