Cost of owning

I am due for an upgrade 4/17. Hoping to get my first Droid. Unfortunately, I'd planned on getting the R2D2 version, but it seems they are out of stock on that (though I will check stores and continue checking Amazon until my upgrade date. Any other tips as to where I may find one would be wonderful).
I was simply wondering, if I got the Droid 2 Global (if I don't get the r2d2 this is my second choice), does it cost more to own it due to global capabilities? I won't be using the global capabilites, I'm only in college, so obviously not doing any international travel. Are the global charges only made when you use the phone globaly? Or will I be paying for something I don't use?

Thank you all for your replies. Littlek, I do want to clarify that you do not need to add a global plan to use the Droid 2 Global. The global plan can be added/removed to your account as needed.
Thank you,

As far as I know, it will only cost extra if you use it globally.

I hope you're right. Because that would be perfect. It's my second option, cause I need to have a keyboard. Though I still wish I could've gotten the R2D2. Still keeping my fingers crossed for that.

Have you tried any of the on-line stores, such as Wirefly? You might be able to find an R2D2 there.

Yes. I was following it on Amazon for a while, just today it went out of stock, sorta sad. I checked Wirefly before I made this post, just to be sure.

ALSO. Does anyone know whether Amazon is trustworthy to buy a phone from? I like their price for the global better than a new one here. Or should I just get the certified pre-owned from Verizon? (Sorry for all the questions, this will be my first smartphone, I want to be informed).

I would trust Amazon. Yes, I would purchase electronics of any sort from them. As for getting a certified pre-owned cell phone from Verizon, in my humble opinion, that is a gamble. One that I, personally, will not make.

If you are wanting the software (screensavers, background, sounds) of the R2D2 phone, those can be found on the Market seperately. I too wanted the R2D2 phone but also for the physical look. I settled for the regular Droid2 Global so my wife could get her DroidX for free. So I just downloaded the Star Wars stuff from the market.

Other than Physcial appreance... Cost is the same.
Just get the services that you you were planning on getting any way.
Resist the temptation for the extras and there should be no diffrence.
