DROID 3 KEYBOARD TYPES AND ERASES FOR NO REASON

I have had my Droid 3 for about 3 weeks now. Bought 2 of them. One for me and one for my daughter. Our physical keyboards like to run-on and repeat letters or numbers or symbols without stopping. And even worse is that if you realize you made a mistake on one letter, when you hit the delete button to erase it, it will erase EVERYTHING you just wrote. My daughters FIX is to not use the physical keyboard...Well that was my whole reason for buying the phone so that does me no good!

I had a whole entire grocery list wiped out in the store the other day because I didnt notice that the delete key kept on running after i tried to delete ONE thing from my list. On other forums I have seen people call this phantom keyboarding, but I have not found any answers or updates to this problem. Tried to get help from Verizon and they sent me a USED phone to replace my FULL-PRICE,  PAID FOR, NEW PHONE! Un-believable. And they act like they dont know what Im talking about. I dont see how they dont know what Im talking about especially since i have read about 25 other complaints about the same thing on other droid forums. And now as i research even more I see that people were having this problem with the Droid 2 and yet Verizon still chose to take on a Droid 3 with the SAME problem. Well I will be sending them back their USED phone with the nicks and scratches it came with and hopefully one of you out there is a cell phone genius that can help me out with a solution to fix this, as it seems as though Verizon and Motorola isnt even trying to come up with an update or fix since the Droid 2.

If you have a solution, please share it here and with others in the other Droid forums so that we all can help each other out.

Thanks to all, and God Bless :smileyhappy:

When did the problem start occurring? If it occurs within the first 14 days, you are always entitled to exchange it for another brand new device at your place of purchase. If they had a certified like-new replacement device sent to you within 14 days, you have every right to be angry.

Even though your phone may have been "brand new" when you bought it, there has to be a clear point in time at which the device becomes "used." In the case of Verizon Wireless, that is 14 days. After that point, Verizon Wireless replaces your device with a certified like-new device. In nearly 100% of all cases, the phone you receive will be in much better physical condition than the phone you are turning in. These devices are also guaranteed for 90 days, even beyond the point your initial manufacturer warranty expires.

Verizon Wireless understands that your cell phone is very important to you and aims to keep your service up and running, no matter what the circumstances are. If you ever feel the quality of your replacement phone is less than what you are turning in, you definitely have the right to send it back and lodge a complaint.

The used phone they sent me is actually pretty good. Weird thing is that it turns itself off sometimes and the battery shows 100% all day. I supposed thats a good thing too. Just a little worried that the if battery isnt really at 100% even though display shows it is. But it hasnt died so I suppose its all good. My main concern was the keyboard issue and I havent had any problems. One thing Verizon should know is that within the first 14 days people are still getting used to their phones. I thought the double typing and erasing was due to my error and pushing the keys too hard or something. I just figured it takes some getting used to coming from a Blackberry to a different phone. Thanks so much for your help :smileyhappy:

Oh and by the way...I am the original poster, I had to create a new account because I was having trouble logging in under crissyq. But Verizon really should give people a good 30 days to get used to a phone. Especially going from one platform to the next. Because I paid full price for a new phone and just because I had it over 3 weeks should NOT give youu the right to keep my money and send me someone elses broken and repaired phone. I always thought refurbished phones were sold at a discount.

Oh and one last thing...doesnt it seem kinda strange that even though this phone JUST CAME OUT, that they already have "used and refurbished" to send to their customers. Now if I had dropped it or damaged it, thats one thing but for it to come with a defect doesnt seem right to me, does it really to you?

Vzexperts she told u when she got it but ordering is different the receiving it. I think ur wrong about the 90days. If she got a new phone and then replaced it the yr warranty exists. If u buy a clnd u have 90days unless u have insurance. But this is the bionic section. Vzwexpert Are u a verizon spokesperson? Ur tip on the 3g droping didnt help. I pay good money for a phone it should have good signal and i cant just be happy that it has all this cool stuff on it. Some of that cool stuff depends on that signal.

The only times that happens to me... is when I hit the shift(sometimes I hit it twice and it "locks") and hit the backspace/delete button. the "lock" is supposed to happen if you hit it twice...

Yes Tidbits, I thought I may have been hitting something as well to make that happen. But trust me, if this is happeneing to you then you should send it in because it may NOT be your fingers, it may very well be the phone. Shift is supposed to give you capital letters and if you hit it twice its suppose to lock you into capital letters, NOT give you repeated run-on letters like this " thankkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk". No Shift I know does this. Nor is shift supposed to erase your entire message just because you hit backspace ONCE. You may wanna check in to that. Thats all im saying.

Yes SHIFTLOCK + Backspace is supposed to erase everything you write.  It's Android specific on hardware keyboards.  ALL Android devices I have owned with a hardware keyboad does this.
The repeated letters I do not get at all.  So I believe it's specifically your device or an app you installed that is causing the problem.  If you did a full wipe make sure you don't use the backup feature with Google.  You will put back whatever is causing the issue.  This is WHY some people end up having to return 2+ devices and they tend to assume it's the devices all the time when thousands of people don't have the problem.  There's other factors involved, but so far this isn't mentioned on Motorola Droid 3 offical forums so it leaves me to believe it's something about your device settings and/or your apps installed.  If you already done a return then it's more than likely you cached the bug and when you restore the backup it puts it on your new device.  Before you sign into Google you need to disable the restore(default on).

crssyq123, why how annoying this can start becoming. I use my keyboard for practically everything; texting, data, calls etc. and I know this is an important part of the functionality of the phone. I did a bit of research and found customers who had issues with the keyboard repeating characters, closing by itself, and typing random letters should clear the cache on the phone as a suggestion to fix the issue. Some customers also removed different apps that may have caused an error on the phone. If this does not work, you could perform a factory reset. I have listed both steps below.

Steps below to clear cache

Go to settings, applications, manage applications, go to multitouch keyboard, clear cache/data.

Steps to perform a factory reset

Note: Performing a hard reset will remove ALL data including the Google account, system data, application data, application settings, and downloaded applications.

  1. From a home screen, select the App menu.

  2. Select Settings.
Note If the application icon is missing, select App menu filter (located at the top) then select All apps.

  3. Select Privacy.

  4. Select Factory Data Reset.

  5. Select Reset phone.
Note If presented, enter the current passcode or draw the unlock pattern.

  6. Select Erase Everything.
Note Allow up to 3 minutes for the factory data reset and reboot processes to complete. Then perform initial activation.

I think you misunderstood what I was saying. The manufacturer's warranty covers you for 1 year from the original date of purchase of the original phone. If you do a warranty replacement on the 29th day of your 12th month, you will be covered for an additional 90 days. That's the way all warranty replacements work. You are covered for 90 days, even if your manufacturer warranty has expired.

As for the 3G tips, you always have to reboot the phone before the changes take effect. That's the only thing I didn't mention. If you lose your connection and then change the settings, you will have to reboot. But as long as you have a connection, the changes should be applied immediately.

Lastly, yes, I am a Verizon Wireless representative. I just don't work for the department of Verizon Wireless that monitors these forums, but I still like to offer up help when I can to all customers, not just my own. The Bionic happens to be the phone I own, so I am a little more knowledgeable about its quirks than most.

First Droid 2 lasted 10 months.  Replacement was DOA.  Current Droid 3 is 5 months old and has been treated with kid gloves.  Today, the phone was sitting on my desk, untouched, when it suddenly turned itself on, took control of text messaging, dialer, Google search and other seemingly random applications, and proceeded to enter, all on it's own, either a series of random characters or a never-ending sequence of capital S's.  This is not the first time this has happened but where before I could previously fix the problem by going into the multi-touch keyboard settings and clear the data, that no longer seems to work.  The phone now refuses to boot, preferring instead to stop when it gets to the bootloader.

This is a problem with... what?  Verizon is no help.  But I've done enough research on this to know that this is far from a random problem experienced by an unlucky few.  Given that these types of issues have been reported as far back as 2010, it seems obvious that Verizon/Google/Motorola think this is something that is to be expected and tolerated.  Where's my Startac?  This Droid stuff is junk.
