The DROID X is my favorite device to date. But it doesn't come without flaws and problems that plague it up to this day. I have owned 3 of them but had a lot of problems with all 3. I was so frustrated that I decided to take things further and do some testing and talk to some people over at Motorola. I have gotten help from them because not only do I know people there, I had managed to speak to some of the guys that developed motoblur and worked on the production of the X. So I've decided to post a guide and explain the issues and some tips that hopefully everyone can find helpful. Lets get to it ::
1. Restart Issues/Causes
.BLOATWARE: The bloatware crap that comes preinstalled with the X is causing random reboots. Some of them (VZ Nav, etc) that constantly run in the background causes the phone to lock up and forces it to restart.
.MEMORY MANAGEMENT/HARDWARE BUG: again it goes back to the crapware that comes preinstalled. When the X runs out of memory it locks up and forces a restart. With 512MB ram you'd think this shouldn't be a problem.
.USER ERROR/BAD APPS: I downloaded tons of apps , some of which I use and some for testing. When I used launcher pro to cover up blur which I know a lot of people do, the phone would freeze and lock up and restart. Bad app? Or again memory?..Mis behaving apps can cause the phone to lock up and reboot, but even when I ran stock it happened.
2.Moto's Response To My Questions
After all the tests, I got on the phone and had a chat with them for about half an hour. Here is what I found out:
.On Bloatware: As the carrier Verizon opts to put their own software on the phones unless restricted buy a manufacturer..But because Android is open, Verizon can modify the software before release.
.ON Droid X Memory Issue: Its a software thing. 512mb is sufficient to run on the phone but you can't tell when an app can go bad, sometimes they get corrupted or crash and cause the device to lock up, freeze and restart.
.On Gingerbread: Coming soon for the Droid X. Currently in testing for a 'Future' release date. Will offer enhancements to the X and come with an updated blur interface and should 'correct' the restart issues so many have been complaining about.
.On Droid X2: Coming soon. Should be in May. The internal hardware has been upgraded and will offer a solid and much better user experience, for the fans of the current DROID X.
.On Droid Bionic: The bionic is not cancelled. It will launch this summer
So that was mostly it, they seemed to answer my questions fairly well but as with company rules, they couldn't give out all the secrets. Personally I don't mind the bloatware or whatever Verizon wants to put on their phones but they should give us the users the option to Uninstall any apps we don't want or use because we buy these phones and pay good money for the service. I played with gingerbread on the X and it was pretty good but as far as I can see, prepare yourself for more bloatware..
Finally for anyone new to the X or Android here are some tips to get you along and hopefully provide you with some helpful info:
1. DO NOT! Use app killers. Android manages apps and memory very well. Some apps run in the background but do not take up any memory or CPU. They just sit there and when needed they will go out of memory to provide space of other apps. App killers will drain your battery faster because it will force the apps to close and they will start up again and cause the battery to drain.
2.BATTERY TIP: Make your battery last longer
.Turn off Auto Sync
.Adjust Display Brightness
.Only keep apps that you NEED and actually USE.
*CONDITION & CALIBRATE THE BATTERY*
When you first get your phone its only partially charged and even when you charge it to 100%,it might show that its fully charged but its not accurate because the battery has not been calibrated. So even it shows 100% its actually at around 80%, that's why you see a jump in battery life after a little or no use sometimes. Here is how you calibrate the battery for longer life:
1. Turn Device ON..Charge It For 8 Hours/OverNight..Or Until LED Turns Green
2. Unplug and turn it OFF, plug it back in and charge for 1 hour (or until LED turns green),
3. Unplug and turn it ON, wait 2 minutes, turn it OFF, plug it back in, and charge for 1 hour (or until LED turns green),
4. Unplug it, turn it ON, and use normally.
Some More Battery Tips:
Accounts & Sync: Turn off Backup Assistant, News & Stocks. Use them Manually if you really have to.
Facebook App: Sync every 4 hours and not auto (for those who use it)
Twitter App: Do not Auto Sync, set to sync every four hours (for those who use it)
Email Syncing: Exchange: Peak "As Items Arrive" Off Peak "Manual"
Hotmail/Yahoo/G Mail : Set to sync Every 4 hours or you can check manually
Apps Syncing: Android News & Weather App, set to sync manually.

No disrespect but you a bit behind in the times with this post, all the information you posted has been covered thousands of times in numerous of forums and the post didn't cover anything new.... As for the part about the battery bump process, this was not suggested by Motorola this was suggested on a number of HTC forums from users that works well.

Appreciate the information but you didn't have to go to every post and direct it to this post, the users here go through the forum daily and the post would have been read...

Thank you Jay for all your info. I just had to put in my two cents because I have been all over different forums trying a hundred different things over the past few months trying to figure out how to get my DroidX to stop rebooting. I disagree with the other poster about all this stuff being already mentioned as well.
Your info may lead me to success...I will post next week and give an update as to how its all going.

Got the gingerbread update last weekend. My DX is now like a new phone. No rebooting whatsoever. I think they finally got it right!
