Data Usage while connected to Wifi?

I Recently got Driod 2s for my wife and son and just checked how much data they are using. When at home they are connected to our Wifi. Why is there data usage when they are at home? Do some apps use the 3G even if the phone is connected to Wifi? There is data usage while they are sleeping (and connected to Wifi), why?

Yeah, yeah, I'm sure someone will comment that they are secretly getting up multiple times every night, turning off the Wifi, and surfing the net with their phones.... What's the real story?

Hmm interesting. Well some apps do need to use 3g and not wifi. Could be that the wifi is going down and the phone automatically goes to 3g. What I would recommend is turn off data on the settings. Turning off data does not block wifi. keep in mind picture messages use data but you do not get charged for it. Some apps automatically update too. Its normal for this phone to connect to the internet on its own and sometimes it will connect to the verizon data network. Works the same on any other android phone on any other company. Not a verizon thing.

Just curious if you have only so much data per month before you have to start paying for it, is it the plan your on? The reason I ask is right now I have an EnV2 and my Fiance is heading down to pick up the Droid 2 for us and the plan is "unlimitted e-mail and internet", doesn't that mean unlimitted data plan?!? Just curious. Thanks,
