Data only plan and Google Maps Navigation?

I have the original Droid and I am nearing the end of my two year contract, I am considering changing to a data only plan and I am curious how this will impact the Google Maps Navigation app. I think this app only requires a data plan in order to function correctly, so does this mean that with a data plan I could still use my Droid for turn by turn directions?

Can anyone confirm if this is true? Anyone out there done this?

You can't have a data only plan with the original Motorola Droid. You must have a voice plan too.

Are you recommending the two phones that you noted (Eris and Thunderbolt)? Not sure if that is part of your signature....

If those were not meant as suggestions can you make a suggestion? Basically I want an Android phone with a data only plan (by the way does not have to be verizon now that I see I will need a different device) so that I can use the device for turn by turn navigation (via google maps navigation) and also be able to connect to wifi.

The Eris and Thunderbolt bit was part of the signature.

The only way you can get an android device with a data only plan is to get a tablet. Anything else that is a phone requires a voice plan and a data plan at the minimum. Text messaging packages are not required.

Thunderbolt (purchased full retail only) or a tablet. Anything else will require a voice plan with VzW. Seems like an awfully expensive GPS though, don't most standalone GPS devices only charge like $10/month for traffic updates and $50 a year for map updates?
