Defective Screen on Incredible

My screen has small hairline scratches all over the upper left and lower left corner (when looking at the screen). I have no screen protector, but this thread is not about screen protectors so please do not advise me to get one. I consider myself to be very careful with my phone. It's never been dropped, and when not being used it spends the majority of its time in a holster or "dedicated" pocket (with no other items). I stopped using the holster because I thought it was causing the problem, but new scratches continue to appear in the same area. My wife has the "same" phone and has never seen a scratch under similar usage and care.

The only conclusion I can draw at this point is that my "5-o'clock shadow" is causing these scratches! I am right handed, and the area where most of the scratches appear is where the phone typically makes contact with my face. I realize how crazy this sounds, but I have been observing these scratches get worse and worse over the past few months, and nothing seems to stop the spread or indicate any other cause...

If it is truly the contact with my face that is causing these scratches, I consider this to be a manufacturer defect with my phone. Clearly the batch of glass that I got is not as hard most Inc owners (and I certainly hope that this is not the Gorilla glass I've heard so much about). I've owned a BB Pearl and BB Storm 1 prior to the Inc, and have never experienced this.  I inquired with Verizon about swapping my Inc with a replacement due to this issue, but was promptly rejected...

So you consider it a manufacturing defect when you admit to rubbing a glass surface with an abrasive material?  Strengthened glass is harder than normal glass but does still scratch, especially after the scratch resistant coating has been worn off (which I suspect in this case).

I know you don't want to hear about a screen protector, but sometimes they work to hide hairline screen defects such as the ones you describe.

If the screen on my phone is not able to withstand contact from a surface that it was "designed" to come into contact with repeatedly, then yes, I consider this a manufacturing defect.  I am speculating that the glass or coating on my phone was not of the same quality/durability as that of most Inc owners (maybe a bad lot?).  Thanks for your feedback though.

I doubt a 5 o'clock shadow would cause such scratches to the device.... I sometimes have a 11pm shadow. Those scratches are from jewelry. An earring and a ring. These screens can take alot, but jewelry can be very abrasive.
