I'm sure that Samsung is aware of these and that they will resolve the issues eventually. I just wanted to document them.
- Display refresh: jerkiness moving between pages on the home screen
- Display refresh: extremely slow in Baloonimals
- Display refresh: Home screens are blank when returning from applications. Will redraw correctly after 10 - 20 sec.

Have you always had these concerns with your phone? Or did this just recently start?
I want you to put your Charge in Safe Mode. Safe Mode temporarily disables all applications that have been installed via the Android Market. Performing this troubleshooting step is necessary to determine whether a 3rd party application is the cause of an Operating System / Application issue.
To enable safe mode:
Press & hold the Power button
Select Restart
Once the Samsung logo appears, press & hold the Menu button
Continue to hold the Menu button until Safe mode appears in the lower-left of the unlock screen. This may take up to 45 seconds.
Once the device is in Safe Mode, move between pages of the home screen, test it in Baloonimals (which I assume is a 3rd party application), go to home screens to see if still blank when returning from application.
If you don't experience these issues while in Safe Mode, then there may be an application that is causing these delays. You can resolve by uninstalling/deleting unwanted/unused applications. As a last resort you can hard reset the Charge.
Warning: This will erase all data from your phone, including:
- Your Google account so you MUST know the GMail address & password used to set up the phone.
- System and application data and settings
- Downloaded Applications (except paid applications as long as you know the GMail address & password used to set up the phone)

VZW tech does monitor this forum, and often pick up on and escalate issues posted here, to either higher leverl Verizon tech support/development or to Samsung tech support.

What about seeing a "checkerboard squares" when surfing the browser?
Other apps just blank out to a white page, like Twitter.

Again, my phone does not have those problems (yet!). If you are within the 14-day free exchange period, you should take the phone back to the VZW store and have tech support check it out. If they can't fix it, get a new one for free, with another 14 days on the clock.
