Do I need to manually switch Wifi on and off?

I'm in the habit of manually switching the 3G off and Wifi on, when I get home. Do I need to? Or is there a way to get the phone to pick up Wifi automatically? I think our friend's iPhone does this automatically.

It will pick it up automatically However when you are out and about with WiFi switch on, the phone looks for a connection and uses the battery up while looking.

@tjmack99, You really don't need to turn off 3G. Whenever you switch on WiFi, it will automatically start using WiFi and 3G is inactive.

There are apps out there in the market that help manage turning your WiFi on and off based on location etc etc. However, I personally find it easy enough to switch off Wifi manually.

Hope this helps!

I did this to make it faster:

"+" , widget, settings, wi-fi (and then again for mobile network) to add them to the main screen. This allows me to turn it on and off with one touch instead of going into the actual settings every time. I also added one for profile so I can put it on silent when I need to.

So, if I'm out driving, using 3G, then arrive home where I have WIFI, there's no way for WIFI to automatically be recognized, it has to be manually switched on? I think that's what I'm hearing from everyone.

Thanks

@tjmack99, There are apps in the market that will allow you to do this automatically. One of the popular ones is Locale (not free). So yes there are ways to do this that are not manual. I'm sure if you search long and hard in the market you can probably find a free app to do this as well. Personally I have not tried to so far, and I'm happy just flipping the wifi widget switch on my main home screen.

WiFi will be automatically recognized if it is on, but it will not automatically turn on if it is off.

My mistake. I see that Tasker is also an app that will do this.

Yes you are correct. Tasker is the other good one. But it's paid too.

If you have the WiFi switch on, when you arrive at home, the device will switch to the WiFi radio automatically. Mine does it all the time. However leaving the switch on all day will reduce your daily battery life as the phone looks for a connection.
