For Gmail, menu->Settings->Select ringtone->Silent->OK
or are you implying that you change it to silent and the setting is not retained?
Yes, I just did this tonight. Go to settings/sound & display/ringer volume. There's a box that you can unclick that says Use incoming call volume for notifications. Unclick it.
Hope that works. I was getting woken up at 4:30AM by DROID! Just got the phone on Sat. Love playing with it. Lots to learn.
