The one-piece holster compresses the physical buttons on the phone. RESULT: the screen stays lighted 100% of the time the phone sits in the holster causing rapid battery drain.
This was confirmed at Verizon store using multiple holsters and multiple Droid X handsets, all with same problem result.
My Droid X holster has worked perfectly for the two weeks that I've had my phone. I have never experienced the condition that you've described.
Can you guys provide a link to show which holster you are talking about? I was considering getting the combo holster and I don't think this is what you were meaning. Is the one you are talking about the one that it just sits with a belt clip and goes into the holster? I was also considering going with the leather case instead of one of these holsters.

Yes! That is exactly the one I was thinking of getting. I love the fact that it has a back covering to the holster for the phone. That way the phone is totally protected front and back. Thanks for sharing the link. I think I will love that holster combo too.
The Verizon Holster/Shell combo for the Droid X is just fine. I've been using mine daily since the day I purchased my DX, a month ago, with no problems.
My 1 piece holster from Verizon has an indentation at the bottom for the buttons and works perfectly.

I suspect that the Motorola software might control physical key sensitivity. My Droid X came with software version 604 pre-installed. If anyone has version 604 but does not have the problem, then the mystery continues. I now have the 2 piece holster (shell / holster combo) and it works fine.
