Try clearing the cache and data from the Market app.  Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > Select the all tab> scroll down to Market.  Select the Market and then press the clear cache and data button.  After that press the force stop button.  Back to you home screen and open up Market again.  You will have to accept the terms of service again.  Then find the app you wanted to download and attempt to install it.

I have heard some stuff about people having problems recently with the market.  This may be due to the recent changes they have made (the market web page has gone live and enabled installing apps from the internet).  You may be able to fix this, though.  From your homescreen, press menu>settings>applications>manage applications.  Make sure you are viewing all apps.  The tab for this, on my phone, is at the top of the screen.  Then, scan down to market, select force stop (or close, something like that), select clear cache (if highlighted), then select clear data.  Then power down your phone, turn it back on (you can also do a battery pull at this time, though I don't think it will be necessary), and open the market app.  You will have to accept the terms of agreement and possibly re-enter your gmail password, but you can try and download an app.  Also, double check your data connection, sounds dumb, but sometimes we do stupid things.

Just an update, I think I got the same error tonight while trying to update some apps. I just hit retry until it worked. Google may be having some server issues.

Yeah, there is a problem with the app market, not our phones.

Which is perfect since I decided to uninstall Go Messaging and can't download Handcent. Great.
