Droid 2 Global - Cannot Hear Callers

Got my new D2G a few days ago and absolutely love it. But, there's a problem that has got me frustrated to no end. I can receive and make calls, but I cannot hear the person on the other end of the call. They can hear me loud and clear, but they sound like they're a million miles away ... the sound is very faint.
This is unacceptable. I've tried everything I know but cannot figure out what's wrong.
Any ideas?

Hello fellow community members,
Thank you for all the various feedback on this issue. I can assure you that all the feedback is taken into consideration as we work diligently to resolve the audio issues that everyone is experiencing. As stated by my co-worker, ChristinaB, this concern has been lifted up to the manufacturer, Motorola, for discussion on a solution. SInce the topic has so many entries, I would like to provide some troubleshooting steps so new posting from members don't have to look far for suggestions. They are as follows.
1. Check the device volume ( I know this sounds like common sense but sometimes we forget)
2. Identify what type of calls that the issue is happening on. (Inbound or outbound/ landline or cellular)
3. Remove any/all connected audio accessories
4. Turn off bluetooth and wi-fi when not in use.
5. Remove battery while device is powered on, wait 5-10 seconds, and re-apply the battery
6. Perform a factory reset. (I know this is the step that everybody DON"T want to do but it is very effective in resolving issues)
Just to share an experience with everyone, I had this issue with one of my phones & it turned out to be a bluetooth issue. Most of the newer bluetooth devices have an Auto-Pair mode. When you walk by a bluetooth that has Auto-Pair then the phone will try to pair on it's own if bluetooth is active. Even after the bluetooth device is out of range, the phone is still searching for the bluetooth device that walked by, thus creating the audio issue. I understand that this might not resolve everybody's issue but I wanted the community to be aware that such a situation happens more often then we acknowledge.
As you all may know, there are more community members than employees on this forum. Both myself and my co-workers will try to resolve this issue, one at a time, as time permits. If for any reason we are unable to contact you, via phone or private message, feel free to call our toll free number for assistance, 1-800-922-0204.
Thank you for your time and patience.

Have you tried it on speaker phone?
You did turn up the volume, right?
(Sorry, but if we don't start with the obvious we can spend a lot of time on the wrong thing)

Sounds like your in-call volume isn't high enough. Make or receive a call and press the up volume button.
Pressing it when not on a call just turns up the ringer volume, during a call is raises the in-call volume.

Using just the phone, no headset.
The volume is all the way up.
The speaker phone isn't working either.
The bluetooth works in the car without any trouble.

I have had that problem also. It is very frustrating. The only way I could solve the issue was to power off and then back on. But this is not a solution to the problem. Please let us know if there is a solution or update that we need.

I just received mine with the same problem, took it to the Verizon store and all they did was take the battery out and back in and it works fine.

Had the same problem two times. Have to take battery out each time. No reason for or activity before this happened.

In both cases a power off fixed the problem, but it is frustrating to get a call and have to tell people that you have to reboot your phone and you'll call them back.

I have had this problem happen twice. I just got this phone in February. Is there a solution upcoming? Or do I need to go to the VZW store so they can give my brand new device a "refurb" phone that has the same issue?

Add me to the list! Got mine in January, and after reading all this, I'm surprised I didn't run into this issue until a couple weeks ago. Mine is the Droid 2 Global, and the volume is all the way up, it doesn't help to put it on speaker, I have the current firmware version, and I don't have any conflicting apps. Please escalate this to Motorola!

same thing just happened to my phone overnight! It says the volume is all the way up, I checked in the middle of the call and the "bar" is red the whole way. Did you find out how to fix this problem? I'm going to keep reading all I can about it, but I'm on vacation right now, so would REALLY like to be able to use my phone!!

Often the short term fix is to do a battery pull (remove the battery, keep it out for a minute and then put it back). This seems to make the phone work again for a while but is obviously not a solution. Others have also had some success by turning voice privacy off (Settings>Call Settings>Voice Privacy and uncheck the box). This seems to make the volume a little louder, and have yet to find an explanation of the downside.
If it persists, return the phone for another. You will get a refurb, but these are generally OK. I had this problem with one phone, the replacement didn't, so it's not a problem with all Droid 2 Globals.

I've only had my Droid 2 Global since early January 2011, but I have lost volume on incoming calls twice. The speaker is also dead when I have this problem. Both times that it happened, I was able to clear the problem by turning the unit off, then on. If it happens a third time, I guess I'll return it to the store.

I also have this problem -- all of a sudden I can't hear the person on the other end of the line. This is really disappointing - I got the phone at the end of December, and expected it to work properly for more than a month or two. And now that I'm locked into a plan, the Iphone 4 (which I would have preferred to get in the first place, but gave up in December on the rumors ever coming true) is not an option. Any chance that someone at Motorola or Verizon is working on a fix to this call volume issue?

Thanks everyone for your replies. I would like to provide additional information. For problems with hearing, please make sure you have software version 2.4.330.A956.Verizon.en.US on your Droid 2 Global. This software version should have corrected the hearing problems. Below I have provided instructions on how to view and update your software version:
View Software Version
From the main screen, touch menu tab

Hi Latacha,
My D2G has the latest version of the firnware you mentioned but still has the same problem. I have had the already relatively quiet ear speaker and speakerphone speaker go to practically nothing while the red bar shows full volume for in-call volume. I don't think this update has resolved this problem.

Rkyburz if you are still having hearing problems with your device and your software is correct further troubleshooting may be needed. To perform additional troubleshooting steps you may contact our Technical Support Department at 800-922-0204 from an alternate phone.

This is ridiculous and unacceptable as a solution to this very problematic phone model. This is the THIRD phone (same model) i've had since November, when I purchased it. Among the MANY problems are: phone number 1 - would shut off periodically in the middle of conversations, or just in the middle of the day when the phone is sitting on the table. It would then turn itself back on in the middle of meetings, etc. Sometimes the screen would go totally black and nothing short of removing the battery and putting it back in would correct the problem. This went on for months and Verizon customer service (store) would restore factory settings (losing my texts for this), put in advanced task killer, etc. After numerous trips to the store (30 minute drive)...they finally agreed to replace the phone (refurbished of course). The second phone would not work at all...brought it to the store again to see if they could get it to work...to no avail...they tried three times...finally i had to send that one back as well and get ANOTHER refurbished version. Now, on this phone....periodically, I just lose the ability to hear other people calling me or when i call out, i can't even here the phone ring or anyone speak...they, of course, can hear me. This time NOTHING is fixing it. Further more, because i have two gmail accounts, and I attempted to log in under the one NOT associated with this phone, it now won't let me upload the apps becuase it continually requests the password for the WRONG gmail account....and won't allow me to change the gmail account it is asking for.
I use this phone for my business calls, my doctor appts, emergency calls from elderly family members, etc. I will now, likely, have to take a trip to the verizon store, yet again. On my last trip to Verizon I pleaded with them to allow me to purchase (trade in, but pay as though I was a two year up for renewal) the iphone....they told me only at cost (in excess of $600!!!!)...i said what if i buy it for the $199? I have been a verizon customer for MANY years....a year and a half ago I purchased a family share plan and added a phone.
I am not happy with Verizon's customer service in this matter nor the fact they won't admit that there are some serious glitches with this model of phone.
