Droid 2 Global & Current Country Location

  Greetings from London...

I purchased the Sim Card from the states before I left.  Verizon Global Tech Assistance was great with answering tons of my questions and unlocking the phone so I could utilize another SIM.  The calling has been good overall.  No issues with data once i set the APN, etc.  Questions or issues that I'm seeing with my 4-month old Droid 2 Global by Motorola are;

(1) I have tried to turn off as many applications from running so as not to keep getting the VZW notice about global data roaming even though I'm not using the VZ network for 2 weeks while traveling.

(2) It brought up a list of countries for me to pick from as to current location - which I should not have done as I wanted to keep the clock and location set to back home (east coast time) and now it knows I'm in the U.K. and adjusted the clock to this time zone.  Have no idea if the GPS will pick up when I start traveling through the 7 countries in the Baltic over 14 days or not?

(3) When I try and change the reference country - no go - it will not come off the United States of America - since I had an Estonian cell phone number - I was assuming it had to take Estonian for the assisted dialing to work.  So far calling to the U.S is no issue since it is always just 0 and 1

(4) Battery life is awful.  Even with wifi turned off.  Noticed it downloaded 640Kbs of updates of google maps, YouTube (which I can't remove from the APPS even thought I don't want or use it, and a few others.  Being in the "country" outside London with a limited connection - it took like 1 hr to download and was in yellow (15% charge) after having the phone in service about 4 hrs.

Any suggestions or input is greatly appreciated.

  Thanks

Hi Spiro,

I hope you are having a great time in London! Though you are located out of the country, we can still assist you if needed. You are able to contact our Global Services team at 001-908-559-4899. This is a free call from your wireless phone. This team has the capability of calling you back when you are located out of the country and can answer your questions. Below I have provided some additional information for you.

I would like to let you know that when traveling outside the US, if Wifi is turned off, you are billed for data roaming. Are the messages you are receiving from Verizon Wireless telling you that you have reached a certain threshold? The rates for calls, messages, and data differ depending on where you are located. To locate your answer, you are able to view our page for global services here . You can turn off data while international to avoid these charges by following these steps:

Menu>Settings>Wireless&Networks>Uncheck Mobile Network

We also have global data packages available as well. They do depend on where you are located. However, I can tell from your posting, which one you would need. I have listed the choices.

$30.00 for 25MB

$100.00 for 70MB

I hope this information is helpful for you. Have a safe trip!
