Droid 2 Global Reboots & Blank Screen issues

This is my second Droid 2 Global.  The first one was replaced within the 30 day purchase period due to a battery charging issue.  Verizon tried replacing the battery (that gave an 1 hour a day more), tried extended battery, no change, could only get 5-6 hours life a day even with the extended batter.  Replaced the phone a week ago with 2nd one, brand new, and now have several issues except the battery. The battery life is great, get a full day, 7 AM - midnight, and rarely goes less than 30%.  But, new issue developed:

1.  Screen will just go blank at random times, and cannot get the screen display to work without pulling the battery.  Even hitting the off button on the top, it will not turn off or restart.  A call can come in, if I guess where to hit on the screen, I can answer it or with my bluetooth headset.

2.  Frequent reboots, but short ones, not the full on one.  Today as an example it rebooted 5 times, every 1-2 hours. It will do it in the middle of a call, ending the call, or even when it is just sitting idle.  Another time, I was starting to dial a number, or look up a contact, and boom, reboot.

A couple of notes,

1.  the first Global 2 did not do that, just had a charging issue with the phone.  But the apps were exactly the same.  Yes, it would do a reboot, but a full one randomly once a week or so, but not every other hour.

2.  I am not new to Droid, I also have an original one purchased over a year ago, same apps.  I just replaced it 30 days ago or so.  It rarely rebooted.  I just replaced it because it was too slow in response and the battery was starting to age.

3.  Been removing Apps that I have been running successfully for over a year thinking one of the updates started this, but I am running out of possibilities.

Any suggestions other than a full factory reset.  That just does not make sense I would have to do that since the phone is only 7 days old, and it has been doing this since its birth.

I understand your frustration in this matter. I suggest completing a master reset of the device. Please back up the phone's information on your PC before the reset, since you will lose the data and the phone will be restored to factory settings. I have included the steps for the master reset below.

  • Turn off the phone
  • Power on phone while pressing "X" key on qwerty keypad - release "X" and power key after you see Motorola batwings.
  • You should now see an "!" in a triangle with Android guy
  • Press the "Search" key on qwerty keypad to enter factory menu, this will unhide the menu and show the following options
    1. Reboot system Now
    2. Apply sdcard:update.zip
    3. Wipe Data/Factory Reset
    4. Wipe Cache Partition
  • Use Vol Up / Vol down to navigate to "wipe data/factory reset" and then use Camera side key or Menu key to select "wipe data/factory reset"
  • Use Vol Up / Vol down to navigate to  "Yes delete all user data" and then use Camera key to select "Yes - delete all user data"
  1. Wait for operation to complete (maybe 1 minute or so) and then press camera key to select "reboot system now"

If you have any additional issues, please let us know.

Thank you and have a great day!

I began to have reboot issues as well a few days after I downloaded the last update to my phone. I have also downloaded a few apps but had downloaded some prior to the update and had no issues with rebooting.  I posted a similar question on the board trying to determine why this is occurring as well.  It's odd and as you stated can occur at any moment but it isn't quite annoying to me since it doesn't occur everyday.  I performed a roaming update to the phone and I thought that had fixed the issue until last night when I had gone at least 2 days without a reboot and suddenly I touched the phone to unlock it while charging and it rebooted.

I hope someone can pinpoint this issue.

Mine tends not to reboot, but to simply shutdown every so often (D2 not global). It did it last night as I was reading an email. Not touching the screen or any buttons, just reading and bloop. Off. It only happens to me every couple days or so, which makes it really hard to come up with steps to reproduce.

To the OP. If your getting this every hour or so, have you tried booting into "safe mode" to see if it's a 3rd party app causing the issue?

I have all of the same issues. The phone reboots, screen blanks in the middle of using, battery is only good for a few hours, tops, even when fully charged. This is by far the worst phone that I have ever owned. We have two of them, both with the same, or similar problems. From reading up on them, it sounds like everyone is having about the same luck. I can't believe that Motorola released this thing to the public.

My D2G has started acting like it is possessed, don't know what
the hell it is but apparently it has happened to a bunch of people, don't know
y it started, or how to fix it, if it's a bad screen digitizer I would love to
know because I would just buy a new one and change it, but I have a feeling it's
another type of hardware issue. I had insurance on my old phone but I don't
think it will carry over to this one because I did not buy it from Verizon, so
now I am going to be stuck with a $400 paper weight. If anyone has any info you
could add that would be great.

I have tried the factory data reset and it has not helped my phone. I am still having the reboot issue, 1-3 times per day although not every day. It will happen when I go to answer a call, text, or email or just go to unlock it. My phone is less than a year old and has no damage so I am not sure of the problem.

Hello Verizon,

My daughter is about to get her third Droid 2 Global.  We have been told "do a factory reset" (we've done that about 20+ times), look for apps that may be causing the problem (the problem occurs even with only the Verizon standard supplied apps on the phone), and make sure the battery is charged (?).

We're tired of having to do a battery pull and power-on (waiting for the phone to boot) before she can make a call or check her mail.

Our local Verizon rep says "When you manufacture a million phones, there's going to be some with problems."  Well, so far we are having incredibly bad luck, along with many others in this thread reporting the same problems.

How about upgrading her to a Droid 3 if we continue to have problems?  Considering that the Droid 2 Global has been pretty unusable since she received it, this shouldn't be a problem for Verizon.

Any success. I have the same issues. Blanking of screen. Random reboots. I've been searching for the next OS in hopes that it would resolve these issues.

I use my phone constantly for work and I'm ready to jump ship to a different carrier if I can't get this resolved.

Help!!

duchscher,

I do understand how important it is to have a good working phone that is reliable, and would like to assist you!

Have you had a chance to do a Hard Reset of your device, just to clear any possible application defects or corrupt files on the phone's onboard memory?  If not, I'm including a link below with instructions how to perform the Hard Reset.  Just ensure your data is backed up before performing the Reset.

Hard Reset - Motorola Droid 2 Global (A956)

Let me know how this works out for you!

I am new to Verizon (switched over on June 26th)  and also new to Droids but I am on my 2nd Droid 2 global.  I have had this one since August 18th.   I have had several phone calls that I cannot answer because the screen is black so I cannot hit the answer button and sometimes I cannot see to end call.  I hit the power button on top and nothing happens-- its like the phone just goes dead!!!!  My Notification bar says I have a text and when I go in there is says no notifications but then I check my text messages and I have one.  I went into the Verizon store on August 26th.  I was told to reformat my SD card -- did that  totally wiped it clean -- I also factory reset my phone that day too but am still having the same issues!!  I am so not happy with this phone -- I picked this one because of the keyboard -- guess I should have researched the issues more and went with something different now!!!  Not pleased at all with this phone!!!

Hello everyone!

I want to apologize for the frustration you've felt and thank you for your patience! There is a software update out now for the D2G to enhance services and fix issues users were experiencing. Like all software updates, it will be delivered over-the-air at no cost in batches. A notification will appear on your phone when available, please see more details here.

Thank you!

I installed the update (don't really like the new interface...), and my screen still blacks out during calls. My regular Droid 2 didn't have this problem. It sounds like all/most Droid 2 globals have this problem. Does Verizon ever do recalls on faulty devices instead of forcing customers to have to go through repeated phone replacements, tons of hard resets, etc.? I went through that with the original Droid...and don't really want to go through it all over again with the Droid 2 Global.

I just bought the Droid 2 global for my daughter less than a month ago and already having charging and battery life issues, along with reboots. I thought I would check the message boards before heading the the VZW store but after reading some of these posts I'm getting really worried. I would hate to be locked into two years with a useless phone. I also am getting sick of the grief from my daughter. I will be trying these updates and resets and hoping for the best.

Same issues for me, too. I'm on my second replacement for original Droid 2 (not global). Phone freezes - doesn't respond to taps. I have to turn the screen off and on in order to get it to respond - sometimes opening the keyboard will help. Disconnects calls in the middle, won't let me slide screen open to answer calls - so I miss most of them on the first try.Screen shakes like it's in spasm, won't scroll. It is paired to my bluetooth but fails to connect most of the time. Even the verizon tech had trouble getting it to work. I could go on and on but I won't. I've had it into the Verizon store where the techs have witnessed some of these symptoms. They continue to replace it with D2G - the third replacement is on its way now. I didn't want or need the global but regular D2 is not available they said. I don't want any more of these defective phones. The "like new" replacement policy may be good but if the phone was defective when new, I don't want it! What am I supposed to do? I am losing faith in Verizon.

Hello, I have had the same issue(s).  I returned my first phone within 30 days and have been living with these issues with my second phone.  I work in the support field and am tired when I call and they say factory restore my phone.  This works for about 45 minutes and take about 45 minutes to perform.

I have the following issues too...

restarts 3-5 times per day when unlocking

speaker volume is low

Black screen when phone is ringing

slow...

When playing music from SD card ALL songs stop 1 minute in

HELP!!!  I love Droid, but this is making life hard when you work from your phone....

Thank You,

Sad Guy :smileysad:

OK, I backed up what I could, reformatted my SD card, and tried to reboot, while holding the X key on the slide-out keyboard. I see the "batwing" (Motorola logo) and release the X and as stated, a triangle with the droid character and an exclamation point appears. I press the key with the image of a spyglass (assuming this is search) and nothing happens at all.

I can reboot back into the same old setup I had before (but with a formatted SD card) but have no idea how to unhide to the "factory menu."

My phone reboots several times a day. I hear a tone indicating I have received a message and when I slide open the phone, there is either no unlock bar at all and it immediately reboots, or there is an unlock bar, I run my finger over it, and then it reboots. When it comes back, I may or may not have a new message.

Please help! This is my second Droid phone. The first just kept turning itself off automatically. That was before the newest system upgrade though.
