Droid 2 Global Update..?

Miss_KissMyCake

Okay, so i keep hearing all of these different things, there will be an update for D2G, there won't, Gingerbread will come to D2G, it won't... I'm so confused. I really am hoping that there will be an update for this phone sometime soon, and with the wat, i hope it will be a really extensive update (not just bug fixes, but real changes [different settings, more customization, things like that]) I was hoping tha this could just be cleared up, and maybe some insight on when it would happen...?

Thanks (:

I can definitely understand your questions about the Gingerbread update.  At this point in time there is no set release date but the release will be coming.  Hope this helps.  Thank you.

I've been trying to find information on when the update will be released for over a month the same as many users on the motorola's owners forum. I've had one replacement phone already and still have issues. Please pass on that the lack of an estimated date is really upsetting many verizon customers and I'm questioning my decision to ever buy this buggy droid 2 global.  What makes it worse is that only 5 months after I got my droid 2 global verizon has released the droid 3 with the update. Verizon needs to take care of it's existing customers. Not just the ones they can make more money on.

Hopefully if there is an update coming out it won't reset the phone to the factory settings and overwrite the customizations already setup. I have heard of that happening with other phones and that has kept me from updating when available, specifically my Samsung i760 with windows mobile 6.1.

A few things that need to be brought to your attention.
Firstly Verizon is NOT in charge of creating the updates for the D2G, that falls squarely upon Motorola.
Next it is worth mentioning that this phone is not built as the sort of consumers that have a heavy emphasis on media apps ( like music and viseo) it was made for folks that have to move about a lot and needed interoperatability between different cellphone systems. In other words this phone is not the primary focus of Motorola for rushed and early updates. If anyone is so impatient to get the update there are seceral websites that have open source copies of the new os on hand for download.

One last thing, last word i received from VZW tier 1 tech support is that they have rolled out the update in several limited areas to test the update. Realistically I would not expect the update before the end of Aug.

Right, this phone was marketed as a business phone.  Which is why people got so annoyed when Exchange sync didn't work, and the phone has had no updates since Dec, and that update didn't address that huge issue.   So, no, we don't want rushed updates, or even early updates, but perhaps 7 months is enough for an update that is neither!

Can someone from VZW confirm the limited update mentioned by ghhrum.  From what I gather from the Motorola forum, the soak test has not yet begun, and this would happen before any Verizon-initiated update.

Thanks

Silver6055, thanks for your inquiry. I have not heard of a soak test for this device or any others. The last information we received was that the update is still coming, the plan just hasn't been finalized to push out the update. I sent information to our product team to see if there was a limited update or trial update.

Finally got annoyed and called VZ today about the D2G and asked about upgrade plans or timeline for gingerbread and was told they "had no plans or timeline for upgrading the droid 2 global to gingerbread."

Just what I was told on the phone.

See.. That's not fair though, because when I got my D2G, I initially wanted the original Droid 2, because I don't go traveling -ever- but anyway... They didn't sell the regular Droid 2 anymore, so what was I supposed to do... That's not fair for the people like me who didn't have the option to get the original.. That's bad planning for Verizon and for Motorola..

I have noticed on the Droid2 Global Support page, they have updated the PDF for the Software Update to reflect the Gingerbread update coming soon. No idea on a date yet.

The D2G GB soak test started 00:00 on 9/1 corresponding with the official GB OTA update for the D2. If we are lucky the D2G GB OTA update may start as early as Saturday morning or more likely early next week.

This article might answer some of your questions: http://www.wirelessandmobilenews.com/2011/06/droid-2-update-news-droid-2-global-android-23-gingerbre...

I can tell you that Gingerbread is a major upgrade, not update, from Froyo, IMHO. I love it so far and it is 3x faster than it was before. I know it sucks that current Global users have to wait...but it is worth it!

The article you posted is old, I only say this because of the upgrade the speak of isn't the new 607 so must be an old article from the June confusion. Thought I would point that out to not cause anymore confusion.

Wait, you have a D2G and you got the gingerbread update?

Because I just went on the Verizon website and it still said coming soon, and I went on my phone and checked for system updates at it said that there were none...

I'm very confused.. Maybe its where you live?

Verizon is doing a limited soak test of a few devices by the look of it. but there seem to be a few bugs hitting the droid 2. I would bet if they are rolling out the new system we could probably expect it to most of the d2g community by the end of the month or by the begining of next month. but i have seen no confirmations yet.

I really wish that verizon as a multi billion dollar company might actually be able to set a deadline and hold it to itself. Verizon all it takes is to notify all the d3g phone numbers with a text of any information regarding it. Thanks the consumer who as spent the money to stay with you for the last 10 years, but maybe not after the next year.

sorry I know this is in the wrong post, but i don't feel like doing the work to find the right one.

Hello Miss_KissMyCake

Yes, the Droid 2 Global now has Gingerbread. It is being pushed out in phases to people in order to NOT freeze up the system update process!!!!

Yes, it is quite ridiculous that most other VZW devices, including the Droid2, have received the Gingerbread update and it has been over a month now and VZW is still 'rolling out' this update.

Well, the update is currently not rolling out, it was pulled until they fix the exchange-encryption issue.  I think the news that the update is again available will first be posted on the Motorola Owner Forums.

That said, if you don't need encryption for your Exchange policies, you can still find and install the update, 4.5.607, from the web.
