Droid 2 touch screen problems

I have the droid 2 and the touch screen has been freaking out all day. Sometimes it just freezes, but most of the time it takes control and just randomly opens things, texts, and call people. It has changed some of the settings from this. I have cleared the data for it and it continues to do it. When it is not freaking out, the screen is just really slow. Is there any other way to fix this?

I'm on my 4th replacement droid 2. Call VZ and complain. A lot. They should send you a new one. In my experience, anytime the screen gets a little damp (high outside humidity, or in my case, if in my pocket while running) it completely freaks out. I've had some success using one of those air hand-dryers on it for about a minute. Seems to dry it out and stop the phantoms from taking over and calling aunt betty, who I really didn't want to talk to right about then...

Krazy04591 That is terrible that you have screen problems! From what you are describing it does not sound normal. When the phone begins to act like this have you ever pulled the battery to reboot it? Additionally, have you ever performed a master reset on the device? If not here are the steps to complete this process:

From the main screen, touch menu tab
Touch Settings
Touch Privacy
Touch Factory Data reset
User has the option of Erasing SD Card - if desired check "Erase SD Card"
Touch Reset Phone
Touch Erase Everything

I like unhappyvzr am also on my 4TH replacement for the Droid 2 Global phone. When I go into the store they tell me this is not a known glitch when OBVIOUSLY it is. Look at these boards, go to google, do some digging. The three of us on this page obviously arent the only ones having this problem, and let me tell you, I am up to my wits end with this phone. My again 4TH phone is screen glitching AGAIN and I am so close to running it over with my car and switching carriers so I can have a phone that actually works. Other than going in and complaining again and getting yet another phone do you have any other hints and tips SammuelP_VZW? Because I take out my battery, my sim card, I have done so many manual resets on this phone, i have drained the battery and i have tried the hand dryer to the phone to try to get it to work, and it STILL DOESNT WORK. Give me some answers or give me my upgrade a few months earlier because this is not acceptable.

Don't know if this helps but I experienced similar problems on my old LG Ally. Turns out it was and update I manually installed. It was taking up too much of the processor speed thus causing the same screen problems the original poster had. When I forced closed the ap and then uninstalled it the phone went back to normal. After that I am careful about installing updates till I have checked for others having problems with there's. I also turned off auto-updates on all my installed aps.

[FIXED MINE] Hey guys, I just had this problem for the last 5 hours. It would select the middle of the screen so i couldn't text, type, anything. I even sent a few texts reading something like "wgrrttttertertgrtttttttttyrtytttrtyrtyrghrtyrtyt" (notice t is near the middle of the screen lol). Anyway, ncoclub's post was right for me. I had done a ton of updates (roughly 30, im a lazy fuck) and it turns out facebook was running. This was odd, because i had restarted my phone to try to fix the issue and never reopened it. As soon as i closed it, the screen was working fine. Now i need to go buy another screen protector because i threw the other one away... >.> Anyway, try closing apps and junk in the applications menu under settings, go to running apps. I actually made an account just to post this lol. THATS how frustrating it was after 5 hours. Good luck!

By the way, my phone's foam liner underneath the glass portion of the screen is starting to show over the image portion, i was wondering if you guys have seen this before. I was thinking maybe that could have done it, along with the app issue.

I did a full factory rest and my phone is still going crazy. For the last 3 days it glitches between programs, calls people and constant jumping everywhere. I almost threw it out the window. I am going crazy and ready to cancel I am so upset. I pulled it apart and there is no water damage to battery or phone. I refuse to pay that 100 for a new one when its not my fault that the phone is possessed. I would rather put it towards the ETF I have of only 160. How can I get my phone fixed.

Then you need to run your Droid 2 in safe Mode especially if you put the apps back you had before you did the The F.R. they could be causing the Issues. Give this a Try..

Safe Mode - Motorola DROID 2 (A955)

Safe Mode temporarily disables all applications that have been installed via the Android Market. Performing this troubleshooting step is necessary to determine whether a 3rd party application is the cause of an Operating System / Application issue. Safe Mode should always be performed prior to a hard (factory) reset.

Enable Safe Mode

Disable Safe Mode

Enable Safe Mode

Press and hold the Power button.
Select Power off.
Slide the keyboard open.
Press the Power button.
Press and hold the OK key.
Continue to hold the OK key until Safe mode appears in the lower-left of the unlock screen.
This may take up to 30 seconds.
While in Safe Mode, remove the most recently installed applications.
Power cycle the device then attempt to use the device.
If the device works properly, install applications one at a time to identify the application causing the problem.

Disable Safe Mode

Press and hold the Power button.
Select Power off.

I had the exact same problem with my Droid 2. The touch screen obtained a mind of its own and would open all kinds of apps. I wasn't sure if there was an issue with the touch screen itself or if perhaps one of my apps gave me a virus so I started the phone in Safe Mode and it still did this...What does that mean?

I didnt add back the old apps that I had and there is still problems. I have learned that if the phone is not working I have to slide open and use the arrow keys and enter when what i want is high lighted. What a huge pain in the butt!!

My roommate is having the issue too. If you open the keyboard just a little, the touch screen will work fine. It is when it is open all of the way or closed all of the way when it doesn't work.

Hope this helps get you through until you can replace the POS.

My Droid 2 has the same problem. I took it to the store and the guy was familiar with the issue, said it was a hardware problem, they're shipping me a replacement. Definitely pays to buy the extended warranty.

I am on my 4th Droid 2, as is my son. They are a great phone when they work, which is not very often. My plan is up and I will either get another type of phone, or another provider, or both. How anyone can deny that these things are a major lemon is far beyond me. If you carry your phone in your pocket, do not get a Droid.

Thank you for your email Katie, but after nearly two years of replacements, updates, etc, I realize there is no fix for the Motorola droid 2. My experience is not only with my own phone, but my son’s and several other people that I know that have it. There is not just “a” problem, they continually evolve with new problems. Things such as locking up, automatically shutting down, automatically jumping between screens, starting up by itself (particularly irritating when on an airplane). Last week I opened an email and when I hit reply it sent the email to the email address other than the sender.

I have visited with Verizon personnel many times. The first time they claimed it was a poor battery, then the particular phone may be defective , then updates were suggested as the problem, then the particular phone again, then maybe apps were the problem. It just never ends and the amazing thing is, several people that I know are experiencing the same problem, but Motorola and Verizon representatives claim that they are unfamiliar those problems. The only commonality which I have found is that most of the people experiencing these problems carry the phone close to their body or in their pocket, so perhaps the phone was not designed for heat. At any rate, it is unreliable and extremely frustrating.

I will not own another droid and since my contract is coming to an end, I am looking seriously at the iphone 4s and providers which offer it. I notice that Verizon has the iphone 4s, can I continue my current contract and purchase the iphone 4s at the reduced rate?

I am having the same problem! No clue why. I have tried a factory reset, updates, you name it and its still tweaking. Now my home button wont work. Seriously frustrated and I have NO INTENTION of buying a new phone under the new every 2 as I will lose my current package, nor am I interested in spending the amount that the phones are excessively marked up.

I agree. Since Verizon does not show loyalty to us by offering to sell a new phone at reduced cost, I feel no loyalty to them and am looking at other providers. Money is tight and I will find the provider that will meet our needs for the lowest cost. I'll let you know what I find.

Ughhhhhhh I am having touch screen problem. I have tired all of the suggestions but nothing is working. This sucks I can't even answer my call because the slide lock is on..... Need some Help. So ready to endm my contract with Verizon. Dare not call their customer service.

poolecas, I know this is becoming frustrating, but I don't want it to cause you to leave! I am here to help! Which model Motorola Droid do you have? When did the touch screen problems start? I have found that many of the problems are due to the phone's narrow

acceptable temperature and humidity range. Several, but not all, of the

problems can be reduced, but not eliminated, by placing the phone in a

cool, well ventilated area while charging, and during usage if possible. I

have also found that sliding it open during charging helps.

It would also help if Motorola and Verizon would own up to the lemon nature

of these phones instead of feigning surprise.

Of course I don't have an answer on how to fix this but I want to join in the conversation on how ridiculous this is. I was ok with my Droid 2 (R2D2) freaking out all day and night, doing things by itself, etc because I was consoled by the fact that I was up for a renewal on my phone....until I found out that Verizon wasn't grandfathering anyone in on Unlimited Data like AT&T was. So guess what...I'm stuck with my janky Droid2 that does stuff on its own because the rest of my family doesn't want to lose their unlimited data!

Sometimes I can't answer my phones or write texts...what good are all my minutes, data and unlimited texts if I can't answer calls, write texts, or search the Internet? My phone isn't even 2 years old yet!

I have tried restarts, taking out the battery, deleting installed apps, opening the phone half way. Everything is at best, ghetto. My next plan is to leave Verizon on principle; my sister has AT&T and I am considering joining her plan. I won't get to keep my unlimited data if I want to actually use my phone, so why not!?

Sammy, you sound just like me. My phone will be 2 yrs old in March. I have always taken very good care of my phones. But I tell you this in March I will be switching company. Verizon's coverage I LOVE, there customer service sucks. Also consider your self lucky about the finding out about the data plan. My friend was due for an upgrade got one but was not told that they were making changes to her plan...... She got a huge bill the following month and they refuse to make changes to her account in the store. Salesmen lied and said he told her, and besides she should have read the receipt before she signed it. REALLY....... She had to jump through hoops for them to change her account back.

I have the same problem. A battery pull fixes the stuck or over responsive touch screen, but when it’s humid—for example, I am in Florida or it is raining—I cannot answer the phone when it rings. A battery pull is not practical then.

Given the limited options out there, I'd be willing to buy a new android phone with a physical keyboard and global capabilities, but all Verizon offers is the Droid 4. It is too old and I will not buy a phone that Verizon is likely to stop supporting and/or issuing software updates for in a few months.

I know how important it is to have a reliable phone when you need it most. I will be more than happy to provide some suggestions to your concerns.

I would first ensure you don't have any Task Killers, Antiviruses, or Battery Saver applications installed on your phone. A lot of these applications are known to cause instabilities in the android operating system and become worse over time. Sometimes it may be so instable that a hard reset is required.

Regarding your Unlimited Data. We definitely still allow Unlimited Data. First, if you upgrade your line it won't affect any of the other lines on the account. Second, if you purchase your new phone at the full retail cost and pair that with our Trade In Program (vzw.com/tradein) you can also keep your Unlimited!

Now I would also suggest that you and your family completed a free account analysis online to see how much Data you all really use! You will be surprised. I have 6 data devices myself and we only use about 3 GB a month total! Don't forget to about free Wi-Fi hotspots!

I've experienced some of the same issues as have all of you, and Motorola won't own up to the issue. They're going to screw around and everyone will have Iphones and another carrier.

I feel your pain.. I don't get why no one will own up to this and fix it. The best Motorola was going to do was give me 25% off of retail for a Droid 4..so 25% off of a $550 phone...don't think so....

Just spent the last 3 hours restoring my phone to working condition. In Safe Mode, I worked to trash applications in between the rogue app taking control of my Motorola Global 2 (A956) device. I am adding apps back, a few at a time, and powering off and on to make sure I have not reintroduced the issue. Looks like my issue is resolved for now and without having to resort to a factory reset. Just wanted to let folks know it is possible to restore.

Doing a data analysis with you all wouldn't be accurate if we currently aren't able to use our phone the way we normally would. I am really considering going to the Internet and starting a petition against Verizon & Motorola behind my Droid2! I can't even attempt to do most of the suggestion because I can't even get the screen slide lock off..... Got a full key board and I'm still stuck like chuck...

This problem is really frustrating me. I factory reset twice. And after both times the screen freak out problem was not fixed. I properly removed and reformatted my sdcard twice. No change in the screen freak out. I put it in safe mode and it is still freaking out. And my warranty is up so there's nothing I can do to get a new phone. I am due for an upgrade in two weeks even though it's a short amount of time, the issue is bothering me constantly and I would like it resolved. I have done everything possible to try and fix the issue and the problem is still there. The touch screen just has a mind of it's own.

I've done my best to get Motorola to address the issue of their products doing this self dialing, but it doesn't seem as if they are interested at all. Honestly, your best bet would be to wait and see what happens between Samsung and Apple, because Motorola mobility seems to be sinking by the stern. When they offered me 25% off of full retail to straighten out their mess, I was done.

I've had similar issues. Touch screen freezes in one place and refuses to let anywhere else work, capacitative buttons, etc unless I turn off the screen with the power button, turn it on, unlock... just fine after that until the next freeze-up.

I've heard it could be a problem with the digitizer, but I'm not technically adept enough to replace it.

Here's an Amazon listing for a digitizer for the D2G. It's pretty cheap, actually, if you're desperate to save your phone without replacing it (and technically adept).

Don't understand much about it, except that it has to do with your touch input. A bad digitizer may cause malfunctions as described by some of the users here.

Edit: found a youtube video on replacing the digitizer. It involves taking much of the phone apart! Also, you'll probably void your warranty if you still have one.

Wow, I can't believe these Verizon reps are regurgitating the same crap that the in-store employees are!!! My phone started doing the same thing ( 2 months before my upgrade, hmmm...) I tried EVERYTHING mentioned and still... So my phone froze on the bootloader screen. Took it into the store... "it's outta warranty, could be fried!" Anyway, went home and did some(more) research and found if I held the camera button while powering on... It worked!!! ...except for a couple of new problems. It wouldn't recognize my Google acct. and wouldn't recognize my USB, i.e. wouldn't charge!!!

I bought this phone cuz' my droid 1 kept pressing buttons whilst I talked, so after 4 or 5 of those I raised hell to get this technological beauty! When and if this phone works correctly, it is the best qwerty slider out! I love physical keyboards, that's why I keep giving the droid a chance, but when glitching is coupled with crappy customer svc. ( after many years!!!)... I think it's time to move on, especially after they're gonna pull my unlimited data if I upgrade to 4G!!!

...and NO verizon, I haven't manually updated, added any new apps, etc... I am soooo ready to switch carriers and just buy a dumbphone out of spite!!! I love how your phones start acting up just a few months prior to my upgrade date!!!

One more thing... I know if I give in and am forced to buy a droid 4 in Dec,, the droid 5 will come out a month or two later!!! Yeah, you guys think you have us cornered, but screw it... I'll go prepaid if I have to!!! Thanks VZW!!!

Yuuup, same probs as everyone else and am due for an upgrade next month! Have been asking about droid 5, but nothing!!! I know if I give in and buy the 4, the 5 will be out w/in weeks!!! I know so cuz walmart is selling that "new" droid M for about $75, when it was full price last month!!!

...I'm so over VZW and their denials, in my business (restaurant), we bend over backwards to make sure a customer is happy and doesn't complain!!!
