Droid Charge Network connection Problems

Just got a “charge” it has 3 bars signal strength but it’s network connection is sporadic at best.
My Fascinate (sitting right next to it) connects to internet, downloads and searches instantly wile the charge stalls and then says “network problem” Do I have a LEMON? Will their be a fix? In the Verizon store as soon as it was powered up it down loaded an update but I have this problem?

I think the Verizon 4G network still sucks. That's probably your problem.

I could understand it if I was in a 4G area but I'm trying in a 3G only area and the Charge is having problems ( over 50% of the time)

Thank you for your feedback. Perhaps power cycling your device can help you to connect in trying to resolve the network problem. Bear in mind, signal strength and bars of strenght while indoors can vary device to device, even if the devices are next to each other. This device was just released, it is to soon to say anything about a fix for the issues you reported. Also, in just getting the Charge, you have the option of returning it to the store you purchased it within 14 days under the Worry Free Guarantee. There maybe a $35.00 restocking fee with the return.

Not in my area. 4G is rock solid, and speedtest.net shows dl speeds anywhere from 5Mbps all the way up to 20Mbps, depending on which server I choose. Pings are a bit high, in the 90s and up. Upload speeds are in the 3-5Mbps range.

This is about 6 miles south of Philadelphia's southernmost border, and of course coverage will vary by location for 4G, 3G, 1xRTT, etc.

LTE is great, now if only this LTE phone lived up to it. You need to carry around 2-3 extra batteries with the Thunderbolt to get through a full 12-14 hour day if you're not going to be constantly around a charger. :smileysad:

I am having the same problem. I have my D1 in front of me beside my new Charge and the Charge is dropping the Network connection constantly. The D1 is rock solid. I was able to click through Airplane mode and that seemed to help for a little while. I am wondering if I should call them and send it back.

I've got the Charge and this phone has SERIOUS handoff issues going from a 4G to a 3G connection. Once that happens, data simply drops to zero and the 'no connectivity' box opens up. This is an absolutely intolerable situation. My wife can sit across from me at the table with her Verizon IPhone and merrily go from website to website while I'm stuck with ZERO connectivity.

Yes, the 4G speeds are fantastic, but I have to tell you they're meaningless if you can't get data while on 3G. If this isn't resolved shortly, I'll have no other choice but to switch to a different phone. By the way, Verizon swapped out my first Charge for a new one today and the same issue remains. This is either a phone issue or a local connectivity issue, but unfortunately, the more I read, the more I'm inclined to think this is a Samsung Charge issue. Not good.

Here's an update on this. I just got back from a Verizon store in Sufflok County on Long Island. I went there because I knew they had no 4G service. The issue that the Charge has is also evident in the Thunderbolt. In fact I couldn't get either of the two TBs to get out to the internet.

So there is either something wrong with the handoff from 4G to 3G in the Long Island area or there is an issue with the software in these phones. I sure hope Verizon is both aware of this problem and working on it.

When I was at Verizon I switched my phone to a CDMA only setting and rebooted. While set to 3G only, the Charge seems to have no issues at all maintaining that 3G connectivity. So this is truly a 4G to 3G issue.

That could explain why when in the verge of 4G that it drops and doesn't come back. I should be in a 4G area (18042) but I can't get it until I drive well into 18045 closer to 18020.

I'm an independant Verizon Rep. I also have the droid charge. I was also having problems with connecting to the internet. I was finally able to fix the issue after a couple of weeks of not having network connection. Last night I had done a master reset. After I reactivated the phone I had 3G service and network connection until I downloaded juice defender onto my phone. My network connection disappeared. So I went into my applications and uninstalled the juice defender and I have had network connection ever since. Don't know if you downloaded this app, but that was what was wrong with my droid charge. Hope this helps you out.

I'm on 3rd Charge...1st one expereinced reboots, 2nd one expereinced the no 3g connection issue. Took that one to get replaced at the Marion, NC corporate store ( that's a story for another day) . Upon receiving my new Charge , I was told I would get a follow up call from Tech support. Well today , I received that call, never mind it's two weeks later , the fact that Verizon called is a huge PLUS in my book. Had not expereinced the 3g connection problem until..you got it, today. Tech support was about to run some tests , when all of a sudden 3g network started working. He surmised the phone is not bothering to look for for 3g and must be forced (don't ask me how) . As I use my wireless network, when I am home ..I never check to see if 3g works or not ,,until I leave the house.

I am keeping the 3g on today , to see if there are recurring issues. Meanwhile, Verizon said they would be running tests all day , and will follow up either later today or tomorrow.

A HUGE THANKYOU goes to Verizon for working on this issue.

And just think two weeks ago I was ready to ditch the service because of one bad apple in their Marion, NC corporate store .

There should be a class action claim against Verizon if this connection problem continues. I have called and called and nobody says anything except they "are reporting the problem". It has now been 3 months and I still don't have a constant connection in any state or area. This phone cost a whopping $300 and everyone just seems to ignore this problem even though people all across the nation are experiencing it.

I love the phone and it's screen is fantastic, but paying $30 a month for something you can't even use is frustrating to say the least.

The droid charge has been a huge disappointment. 4G works okay; sometimes it drops out. 3G the same issue, it just stops working with no notice. It hangs indefinitely. Have to disable and enable the mobile network from the drop down menu; guess this is why they made the option available. Went from droid x and have been regretting it ever since. The software on this phone is too buggy. Going to

and install a different ROM. Don't even want to wait for the gingerbread update.

Lets just start off with, that I am ready to throw this phone out the window! This is my second new phone in two weeks. I live in a 4 g area and it will not stay on 4 g. The internet is down more then it is up. I am coming from a blackberry, that never dropped the internet. This new droid, goes up and down all day long. For some reason, I think that I may be stuck with a poorly made telephone.

I am not happy. . ..

Let me give you guys an update. I have had 3 Charges now and they all do the same thing.

Drop the network at least 15-20 times a day (while i'm using it of course)

Drop 4g when in a 4g area and then refind it sometime later

Drop all the networks and stay in 1g for a while and then eventually it comes back

Or even drops all networks for a while.

I called verizon again. Told them I am sick to death of this phone. A level 2 troubleshooter identified that this is a known issue with ALL samsung phones they have right now apparently. They said they are waiting on a software fix from Samsung to address this issue. I don't know about you guys, but I dont have time to wait around to see IF Samsung is going to fix anything. They might just move on to the next model.

So, i told verizon this is unacceptable and I want a new phone. They are sending a LG Revolution to me now. I highly recommend you guys ask for a new phone too. Simply having a new Charge sent to me over and over isn't going to fix a defective model.

Thanks to all the community members for your input. Tyronne, we have investigated this issue and determined a significant number of devices had the Mobile Data setting turned off. I have listed the steps below to resolve the connection issue.

1. 1) From the home screen, select Applications.

2. 2) Select Settings.

3. 3) Select Wireless & network.

4. 4) Select Mobilenetworks.

5. 5) Select Use packet data.
Enabled when a orange check mark is present.

1. 1) From the home screen, select and hold the status bar (located at the top of the display).

2. 2) Drag the window shade to the bottom of the display.

3. 3) Select Mobiledata.
Enabled when a orange indicator is present.

Lastly, if you continue to have issues with the 3g/4G connection, we will need to speak with you for additional trouble shooting.

I would say that most of us have already tried that as a potential solution to the data dropping problem. It doesn't rectify the situation at all. This is a software problem.

Nobody has posted the signal strength their phone is receiving. It may not be the cause of dropping of the 3G/4G connection but it can be.

Those who are still having problems can you click on Settings>About Phone and click on Status. Then go down the list of choices to Signal Strength (SS) and Mobile Network Type (MNT).

Is your Signal Strength (SS) -85 dBm or lower. Lower such as -65 dBm is a stronger signal. If your Signal Strength is -90 to -95 dBm on up to -105 dBm or higher that is probably why you are losing the connection. Weak signal strength.

Is your Mobile Network Type (MNT) LTE 4G or CDMA 3G?. Did those of you in a 3G only area lock your phone in CDMA either Home or Automatic? To check go to Settings>Wireless & Network>Mobile Networks>System Selection and choose CDMA Mode and then either Home or Automatic. Try Home first. Do not set it for LTE 4G in a 3G only area. Also maybe do not it for LTE if you are in a MARGINAL (extended coverage area) signal strength 4G area if your are dropping the signal.

Beside the Charge phone I use a Verizon Pantech UML290 modem connection to both 3G and 4g and have found that low signal strength can drop the connection.

If the SS at your house is low drive out near a Verizon tower, if you can find one, and see if you can get a lower numbered SS, let's say, in the low 80s and sit there and see if you still lose the connection. If you still lose the connection immediately crush you phone into a million pieces and throw it on the ground...NO JUST KIDDING.

If it stays connected your problem was SS but if it still drops your problem is probably with the phone or some of the phone's settings.

This is a follow on to to my previous post re Signal Strength (SS). While sitting in front of my laptop my phone's SS was -85 dBm. I moved it 8 feet away, set it on a copy machine, and faced the bottom of the phone where the antenna is located in front of the window that "kind of" faces where the VZ cell tower is located. In a couple of minutes it was -81dBm which is a much stronger signal. BTW, around my house with signal strengths that vary from -80 to -87 dBm I do not get any drops.

You can monitor signal strength in near-realtime using the app Network Signal Info on the Android Marketplace.

I tend to have network data issues as well but apparently they know my area is a marginal area. I reported the issue in my area and they sent a team out to survey the area and they came back reporting that the area definitely needs a cell tower to properly cover the area but they need the OK from above them to go ahead and install a new tower.

Does the APP Network Signal give you a numeric value for what should be labeled SINR. This is the best measurement for a 4G signal. It might be in a range of 2.6 to 16.5 or so. If it's 6.5 or more you're in good shape. You can have a relatively weak signal strength of -99 dBm but a SINR of 11.9 and everything is very good. It's fast and usually no drops.

What's interesting is that I've noticed that after some time without a reboot, the device seems to not want to lock onto a cellular data network and won't get a 3G connection, but what's also interesting is that Airplane Mode won't toggle either or will take multiple attempts to engage Airplane Mode. That tells me that there is a quite possibly some kind of System Service (or Daemon in Linux-speak) has locked up or stopped responding as it should. Which would explain why it won't connect to a cellular data network since the parts of the OS responsible for those actions isn't responding.

I wish I could really see some of the deep logs from the system when this occurs. I've love to get a look at the /var/log/messages file, at least that's where most errors go on most Linux systems but I have no idea of Android maintains a messages file in /var/log.

Thanks for posting that info. To bad it doesn't show SINR. If you were connected to a 4G signal it might. SINR is a 4G statistic.

I noticed a -105 Signal Strength (SS). Do you get signal drops? If so maybe you need a amplifier. Here is what my amplifier does. Today my unamplified SS was -88 dBm and when I turned my amplifier it became -42 dBm. It works great EXCEPT you need to have the phone in a small cradle so the amplified signal coming into the cradle is directly under and touching the back of the phone. I suppose if you were tethering your phone this would work great; although, the cable on the cradle is 10 feet long so you can pick up the phone and hold it, place it in your lap, and so forth. I only use it when I travel in our Motorhome and we get somewhere where there is a very weak signal..

Surprisingly, despite the low signals in the basement it can hold a phone call with very little difficulty. On the first floor it jumps up to -90 dBM.

People over on the XDA Developers Forums have reported that there is a new leaked copy of the Gingerbread release for this phone with a internal build ID of EP1Q. Apparently they say that the modem firmware that's included in the EP1Q build has been updated once again and that people who had no 4G in the areas they were in now have 4G coverage.

This tells me that there is a very good likelyhood that all of these problems that we are having are being caused by some really bad firmware for the data and phone modems.

DISCLAIMER: It's highly recommended not to load these leaked builds of Gingerbread on your phone. It will void your warranty.

Come on Verizon, kick Samsung's collective behinds for us and get your own behinds in gear and release Gingerbread for this phone! Apparently all of our issues (or at least 85% of them) are fixed in this release. Get this build to us already so we can finally be happy Droid Charge users and you can finally have a nice and quiet forum where no one complains. Wouldn't that be nice?

This droid charge and verizons reps are useless. This is my second charge and no fix. Verizon tier 2 tech support (that i have spoken with DOZENS of times-no joke) either acts stupid like they don't know of the problem or says there is an update coming "soon". 4 trouble tickets later and cop out reasons for the problems and still no fix. "you are located in a marginal area" Really? Downtown Chicago and all the surrounding areas are marginal-even in 3g mode? "A storm knocked out some towers" For 4 freakin months? {word filter avoidance}
! Samsung and verizon need a class action suit to get their **bleep** in gear. ......... Btw my wife has the same phone with the same problems. Data just quits. 3g 4g it dosent matter, the phone drops data with 4-5 bars. "waiting for connection" over and over again. I shouldn't have to reboot 9 times a day to use my internet, and neither should my wife. {word filter avoidance}

I have been having these connectivity problems since I bought the phone less than 2 months ago. As far as I can tell, it is not a network problem but some kind of problem with the phone itself. A reboot of the phone will generally fix the problem for a time. I am in an area of very strong 4G signal. Network Signal shows a very consistent signal strength of -65 (ASU:20). this shows as 4 or 5 bars almost always. Once in a while it will drop to 3 bars for a very short time. Even with this strong signal, I will get periods where I lose connectivity completely. The number of bars don't drop, it just tells me I have no connectivity while showing 4 bars under 4G. Sometimes the 4G indicator goes away completely, leaving nothing, then return at 4 or 5 bars 10 seconds later. This is all with the phone completely stationary. I really like most aspects of the phone, but this can really drive me crazy as I am relying on this as my only internet connection and use the hotspot to connect my computer to the internet. I'm sure all Charge users are experiencing this and just chaulking it up to a spotty network when, in fact, it is a defective phone(firmware). I am sure that Verizon is perfectly aware that this is happening since it is so widespread. That they choose to ignore it and let users blame the network seems foolish and counterproductive. As far as I am concerned, Verizon lives and dies on the reputation of their network since they certainly do not stand out in any other way. Letting it get blamed for problems with a specific phone doesn't make sense.

Seems to me the phone is a piece of crap. I had same issue with mine. The phone wasn't receiving a data signal but i was able to still call and text. i pulled the battery/reset for like rep said and after that didn't work i was told to do a factory reset which i was promised would fix the issue...things got worse. without my data connection i wasn't able to power up my phone with my gmail because there was no connection. i was overnighted a new charge which i got yesterday and as of two hours ago i have the same exact issue on a brand new phone. total crap.

Not that I want to rub it in, but I am not experiencing this problem at all. I am located in a 3G area at the fringe of Verizon's NYC metro 4G service. I keep the phone in CDMA mode (3g only) and I don't experience any interrruption in data service, whether in my office are traveling locally.

I say this not to imply that you are wrong or mistaken. It is clear that there are a lot of Charge phones out there with major data connectivity issues. I just don't think it is a universal design issue...perhaps a manufacturing defect, or a regional/local network issue, or some combination of things.

I hope your problem gets fixed soon.

From what I have read, sometimes "monitoring" apps have interrupted data connections for whatever reason. I'm talking about Juice Defender, Elixir, etc. I had one of these running and as soon as I uninstalled it, my data connection worked perfectly. I hope this helps.

I don't have those programs at all on my phone.

What I have experienced is that there are times in my area that my phone will say that I have a 4G signal but good luck trying to use it. It will sit there transmitting but getting nothing back. The phone will sit there for sometimes five or more minutes until it finally decides that 4G doesn't work and that maybe it should drop back to 3G. Sometimes it won't even do that, you have to toggle Mobile Data several times until you get it to shift to 3G.

According to the coverage maps that Verizon provides on their web site, I should be swimming in 4G LTE coverage. But no, there are still parts of my city that have no 4G coverage (according to the phone) yet the maps say otherwise. Seems that the more affluent areas of my city have 4G LTE yet the middle-class areas are lacking good coverage.

To all folks on this thread, please try this test. First, completely uninstall any APPs that save power or involve controlling your battery in any way, shape, or form.

Then, fully charge your battery and leave the charger plugged into your phone. BTW, use the 110 volt charger that came with your phone, not the USB port on your PC.

Then, with Wi-Fi OFF and the phone set to 3G or 4G, connect to the network and see if it still drops.

This test is to see if your battery may be the problem.

Please post your results.

I have also had frequent issues with my Droid Charge (purchased in June, 2011) dropping network connection - at one point, I had no network connection for over 12 hours. I have tried reformatting, switching to CDMA, etc, etc. I finally went into a Verizon store and was told I would be sent a new phone. What I received was a "Like New" phone - since I paid for a new phone, I do NOT want a refurbished one. My third trip to a Verizon store to explain my surprise at receiving a used phone was not a pleasant experience. Once home, I sent an email to Verizon and returned the "Like New" phone to them (btw, the store wouldn't take it back, I needed to mail it). I will suffer through the next 2 years with this phone and each time I have a problem, I will call them... Maybe then I can actually get some real help. I have been with Verizon for longer than I care to think about, but I think I'm pretty much done with them.

I've had a Samsung Charge since mid June; had the connection problem very quickly. I had downloaded "Juice Defender" from the App Market. As soon as I deleted it, the phone worked great until now. I've downloaded numerous apps since then with no problem. Tonight I had a similar problem after downloading a free keyboard App. After deleting it, the connection seems normal (for the moment, anyway) I tried this App several times, and each time the connection vanished until the App was deleted.

I just purchased a Droid Charge at Costco for $129 last weekend. Sitting next to a Droid X, the Charge has data connectivity problems when the Droid X is solid. In my office, I connect to WiFi. When the WiFi signal drops to 0, the unit does not switch to 3G or 4G (available at my office location). I get a popup saying there is no network connection.

I see someone here said to reboot the unit. I guess I'll try that.

This is a disappointment. I just disconnected my 3 year old Blackberry to purchase this device.

I can return it, but very reluctant to do so.

its drivn me stoopid!! the gave me a replacement yesterday and stilll no 3G even with like 3 dif. accounts added through wifi only.....this sucks how do we fix this !!!

This used to work before my previous charge can do everything but get 3G like even thou my mobile datas on im blogin dis through wifi so have 4 days left to fed-ex the otha one back or fight wit the lovely version staff bout how the phone is worse then my droid 1st. .. Connection wise. .im getting my crappy 3G cuz its better then no G! " an that ain't G!

Well if you are using it in 3g mode that's why your not having the same issues as us.

Either Verizon's network goes compeltely down weekly for over an hour at a time in the middle of town, or my phone simply won't connect. Have never had a verizon friend nearby to ask. Frequently, though, no matter whether I'm in a 4G coverage area or 3G coverage area, I drop down to 1x, and then to no data at all.

Either Verizon's network is worse than AT&T's here, or the charge has the same network issues that have plagued Samsung phones since they began making Android phones. I'm very disappointed in the reliability of this phone.

When the network data drops, putting it in and out of airplane mode doesn't resolve the problem. Turning on and off data individually doesn't help, and powercycling doesn't help. You just have to sit and wait about an hour for the issue to sort itself out.

Yourbrokenoven i had the same issue i had 6 replacement phones while i was told it is my service area on the 6 th phone i got a guy who admitted that the charge has ISSUES and suggested a different phone and since i have switched to the tb i have had very little connection issues.

I went to a Verizon Wireless store today to discuss this issue with a tech and hopefully get a different phone. I even talked to the Manager when my problem went unresolved.

Here is what I learned:

1. There are no known issues with connectivity concerning the Samsung Charge.

2. They have had sporadic network outages... that could be the problem. (Mine has been down about 1 month, so... nuh uh)

3. The phone allegedly worked in the hands of the tech and manager, however, when handed off to me, there was no data connection. An attempted data upload failed.

4. They could do a hard reset (Who can't?)

5. They could do a hard reset, then if it continued to display the behavior, replace my new phone with a refurbished unit.

6. I could upgrade another line and extend that contract... and pay another $200 (OR, I could just go to AT&T, Deuchebags.. duh, and eff you)

I have had the SIM card replaced, that helped for a day... and the VZW tech was nice enough to acknowledge issues with the phone. I can respect that, it means you are working on it.

Trying to convince me there are no problems with a {word filter avoidance} phone and giving me the run around is an insult to my intelligence. I'd just as soon light a pot of thermite above the phone which would be wrapped in bags of gasoline, while making a video for youtube. I could title it "Verizon Charge finally connects"

Longer story short, it isn't the phone, you're just holding it wrong. :smileywink:

My Charge worked flawlessly until the last software update. Now it will show 3 or 4 bars in a solid 4g area - and report the network is not available. I have been a customer of verizon for many years due to the coverage area, that may change since Verizon is aware of this issue and isn't working to resolve it.. I have 5 phones on a family plan, two with data packs - and pay $280 per month. and no data most of the time now..

whats the deal? I have had my phone for over a year and in the last two days I get "network unavailable". I can't use data I can't even use the phone for a call? I have restarted, pulled the battery, etc. Why would everything be fine for a year and then BOOM no network? I didn't move, I work int he same place .....have they moved cell towers or something? (I know nothing about the technical part of cell towers-just wondering).

I apologize that you are having network issues. Do you have any problems connecting to our 3G network? Can you connect to a Wifi network? Do you have a problem holding either the 3g or Wifi connections? Please give more details so I can help resolve this issue.

I am having the same problem as Ken. I have a Droid 2 but no 3 G. It has worked perfectly as for the last year. I can connect to my WIFI at home, but if I leave home, NO internet.

Network unavailable pops up randomly in the same area around my neighborhood.

Tried to duplicate the problem but seems random. The phone seems to have a hard time checking for service.

I purchased the network extended about 6 months ago because of the decline of service in and around my home. All my previous phones over the years worked fine in my house, seems signal/or service was adjusted at some point and everything went downhill 7-8months ago. Nothing has changed in my house in that timeframe, so no excuse i could find.

Seems when i leave my house in the morning, the phone snaps the connection form the extender about a 300 feet away, and fails to recognize the available 3G. I'll watch as i drive down the street and it finally just gives up and says no service available until i reboot the darn thing. (i tried the on/off airplane mode to no avail) I am 10+ miles from the supposed 4G area, and 3G is spotty around my town regardless of the VZ coverage area.

Coming home is a different story, as the phone goes from 4G to 3G and I'll keep 3G all the way to my home, and then even in my home even with it connecting to the extender. (my biggest hang-up with the extender is the phone still has issues retrieving voice mail, and not all calls come through)

Looks like i just updated the software so lets see what happens....

I am interested in purchasing a similar samsung phone, but i really like this phone and would hate to buy something else if i dont need to.

I have had little to no data connectivity since the latest patch rolled out to my Droid Charge on Sunday Aug 19. I was outside in a normally 4G area where I have had no problems for the past 10 months, and I had NO data connection. I restarted the phone, still no access.

My phone went from 3G to 4G last week and I got the update the same day. Everything seems to be fine, but when I put my phone into the desk cradle overnight, I lose the 4G connection and have to reboot every morning. I need to use the cradle because that is my alarm clock.

I have had similar problems, my phone didn't wanna connect, then i stopped getting all my text messages, and when I did get them it was always in doubles. I don't always have service even when the other people around me have Verizon and they have great service. I had a Verizon rep tell my husband that the phone is garbage, and not to buy Samsung in general. But that didn't help us as we clearly missed that memo from our initial rep. Now I want to upgrade my phone, willing to pay the upgrade renewal price and they don't want to let me. Even though my phone doesn't work. Apparently they would rather loose monthly income and customers who pay their bill on time, than allow someone to upgrade because of all the difficulties with their phone. Stupid!

I am dealing with the similar problem right now.

It was OK (if not the best) until the latest update about a week ago.

Since the update, signal is not caught (I am using 4G + hotspot), and even wifi is not working fine.

Battery drains really fast, and several times a day I feel like I want to throw this on the ground.

I reset the machine to the factory setup, but the problem still remains.

I am not sure if it is a problem of Samsung or Verizon or combination of both, I am not going to use these combo any more.

update-re: my droid charger not connecting to ANY network.

I went all the way thru to a factory reset and finally called customer service.

They overnighted me a phone with no questions asked. New phone works perfect.
