I really am wondering when the latest update will come to the Droid Charge. This phone has been out for quite some time and I am hearing nothing from Verizon about the Gingerbread update. Can someone give an estimated date for the OTA?
Odie2121 wrote:There is no scheduled update as of this point. The only way to get the OS of choice on your phone is too take alt. methods to do just that. I'll say this much, should you decide to do that, you won't be disappointed. Improved GPS lock, speed, smoothness, etc are well worth the 1/2 hour worth of work. Look for 2.3.6
Agreed 110%
Took me a half hour - piece of cake. Actual upgrade only took 6 1/2 minutes.
The rest of the time was spent re-installing my apps. First thing I did after upgrading was installed Titanium Backup so that I'd never have to re-install apps/data again. Can't use Titanium backup until after you upgrade because it requires root access which you'll get when you upgrade to the rooted version of 2.3.6
Phone is MUCH faster, smoother, and it fixed a boatload of little issues. Download speeds and data/GPS locks are amazing, battery life is much improved and there are a lot of little touches added that really make it a pleasure to use (like word complete when typing).
BTW - as a relative barometer, my Quadrant score went from 850 to 1995 when I upgraded to 2.3.6.
The phone really flies now...I would say it is finally "Charged"....
Let me know if you need links to where to D/L, instructions, etc.
Better watch out for the moderators. I guarantee your post, riffrafter, won't last very long at all. So heed his advice quickly for tomorrow his post is going to be gone.
Please send me the D/L info on this I am very interested in making my Charge run better all the way around! Thanks for the info
I read somewhere that the battery should be charged to at least to 50% or more before updating. To me this would mean having a fully charged battery (99%) before starting. Just a thought for what it's worth!

From my understanding you will want to have the phone battery as high as possible, obviously can't get higher than 100% and you don't want to be at 1-2% when downloading. Also I am pretty sure whenever it is released you will want to do a factory wipe so that wires (theoretical) don't get crossed and you get a clean install. Hopefully Verizon will have more information at the appropriate time. Hopefully this update comes coon.
I would like the instuctions on this please

Sure - it really is much easier than people think.
Here's the links to the files you'll need.

The 3 critical files are Odin (what you'll use to apply the update), the samsung USB drivers and the 2.3.6 Gingerbread EP4P build. You can choose from a few different builds but the safest route is to go with the Stock and Rooted (includes all of the same system apps that come stock on the phone) Odin files. Your phone will look completely stock when complete but it will be a whole different phone - believe me!
Here's a link to step-by-step instructions with pics. Just use the 2.3.6 build instead of the 2.3.4 build.

It's a piece of cake...you can thank me later. (no pun intended re: gingerbread/cake)

JerryF - very good advice. I did it with a fully charged battery.
Also - you do NOT need to remove the battery to put it in download mode. Just need to turn the phone off and then tap the power button while holding the vol down button. You need/want the battery in while the update is taking place so that it reboots correctly. Some instructions on upgrading say to remove the battery but this is not correct.
Final note: many of the step by step instructions also show you how to install Clockwork Mod Recovery at the same time. It's a great tool to have for future updates but it is NOT necessary if you don't want to install it. I installed it a few days after I upgraded and am glad I did but it is not needed to go to Gingerbread 2.3.6.
Rifrafter.
I copied all your info just in case your posts suddenly disappear. Nice job you did!
Please keep us posted how it's working and if you discover any shortcomings...thanks.
Thanks again and best personal regards,

If you can boot your phone now without service then I'd think you should be able to but I'm not an expert.
I think I remember a part of the first re-boot process where it goes out and validates your SIM in order to give you service but that is near the end of the reboot and shouldn't prevent your phone from booting up so you can use apps or whatever. It will probably just say your SIM is OK but you have no service and then continue booting but I don't know for sure..
You WILL be upgraded though....once you flash - you're on GB 2.3.6.
Hope that helps.
Thanks riffrafter. I've been waiting for a while and am ready to take the self-update plunge.
Just a question, did you also flash CWM or just go with with the 2.3.6 update?
<update> nevermind, i see you addressed this in a previous post. Thanks for all the great information.

Your welcome dragonlady. Let me know what you think once you've completed the upgrade and had a little time to play with it.
Best,

Flash the update using the .tar. file in Odin then reboot. Then reboot then flash the CWM in odin Reboot. Make sure you use the correct version of CWM as the stard version doesn't work on the charge.
Im running 2.3.6 with CWM working smoothly. Also updated to the 4.0 kernal. Runs sooth.
It's really sad that Verizon sells you a 2 year contract and then has no obligation to support the phone. I think the answer is to go with the Nexus 4 unlocked phone when it comes back since Verizon won't be able to muck up the system with all their junk and it will always have the latest operating system. Better yet - no contract.
