Ever since I bought the Droid X, I encountered strange problems with my media files. I tried to rename some of my videos, and once I tried to go back and watch them after the renaming process, it turns out the phone completely destroys the file, turning it into all numbers and letters, no longer viewable. The phone also does the same thing to pictures if you try to rename them.
I figured I just wouldn't rename anything as to avoid this problem, but last night it turns out the phone did it automatically, destroying about 600 of my pictures and videos. When it destroys the files it sends them into a folder named LOST.DIR and most of the icons look like blank white sheets of paper.
But wait! There's more...It happens to more than just my phone! The other person on my account also has a Droid X, and his phone also destroys media files after renaming them. He ordered a replacement phone, but once again, the phone still destroys files when you rename them.
So we went into a Verizon Wireless store for help and ended up testing this process on the Droid, Droid X, and Droid 2 display phones in the store. They ALL did the same thing and destroyed the picture we took in the store after we renamed it.
Please leave feedback letting me know what phone you have and if it destroys your media files once you try renaming them. Also, If you have a Droid X or Droid 2 please take a random picture of anything, then go to the picture, rename it, and try viewing it again. I would greatly appreciate feedback
Warning: Do not try renaming a picture or video that you want to keep!!! After contacting Verizon Wireless and Motorola, they have yet to find a way to restore my destroyed files, so please just take a random picture of your lamp or floor, so that you do not lose any memories!

I have renamed a number of files without issues but I did notice that the gallery or file browsers do not refresh the list until you restart the device, so this means that the file information was usually there but does not reflect the updated file name until after I rebooted... If I attempted to open file after I rename it I noticed the issue you reported but after reboot all was corrected for me.
Try rebooting after renaming and see if it helps..

Thank you for your feedback, but unfortunately I have taken these steps prior to visiting the Verizon Wireless store, and they did not fix the issues. I tried taking the battery out and the SD card, then replacing them and checking to see if that fixed the problems but did not. In the store they had me do a Factory Reset on the phone, this again, did not fix anything, and after doing the reset they had me take a picture in the store and rename it. Once again the phone destroyed the file after this process.

Think I just figured out what is happening, when you are changing file are you doing it through the file explorer? I believe you are and when you change the name are you making sure to keep the extention? (.jpg .png .bmp)... If you delete the extention this would cause this issued and all you have to do is edit name again and just place the extention back at end of file. Example change "Test File" to "Test File.jpg"
Also the issue with files being moved to "Lost" folder usually happens when you do a disk check of SD Card when used as Mass Storage, I have had this happen a number of times.

Once again, thank you for your feedback, I appreciate it. This does not work for the files the phone destroyed on its own. So I have to ask...why did the phone do this automatically to about 600 of my pictures and videos? I did not try renaming them or messing with them at all. How do I recover all of these media files? Will this just keep happening to all my pictures and videos?

Im glad that seem to verify a resolution for some of your issue but as for the auto deleted files, so far I haven't been able to figure out how to restore the ones in the lost data area because this usually happens when I do a disk check of SD Card from pc and they seem to modify the files to a unusable state, I am starting to believe that Windows does not know how to handle files correctly on a Android platform ... This is why I regularly back up my data to avoid this happening again.
I have only had this happen once or twice since I gad my device but I do not feel this should be a regular situation.

But this should not happen at all. About 600 of my pictures and videos are completely destroyed and the phone automatically did it. I would like to be able to restore those media files

The only problem with this situation is that the problem does not appear to Androids flaw but another of windows long list of issues, under windows you can normally use a restore or recovery option where you can go to temp folder area and restore from the temp files but since this is happening on a storage device this process does not work.

Well thank you Wildman once again for your feedback and trying to help.
If you have a Droid X or Droid 2 please take a random picture of anything, then go to the picture, rename it, and try viewing it again.

Here is a reply that Verizon rep replied to my post made on this subject that reported that Motorola verified my post about restoring error deleted files..

So still Verizon Wireless and Motorola do not know how to restore the destroyed files and do not know the cause of this problem? When a file is renamed it is destroyed. But also it happens automatically, as it did for you twice and I ended up losing so many files. I do not understand why or how it happens?
If you have a Droid X please take a random picture of anything, then go to the picture, rename it, and try viewing it again. I would greatly appreciate feedback

I am confused, I thought we covered this already, you was able to add the extention back to images that you renamed yourself and fix those files because when it was renamed the extension was removed during rename process but the only issue that wasnt resolved was the auto erase of error files (That happens when the phone was mounted as a Mass Storage Device and windows does a error check and marked files as corrupt)
Try this application that I have used before but I usually dont like using software to recover files but this will most likely be your best chance to restore your files.

I wish you luck.

Dear Wildman, I am not forcing you to reply to this post nor is it your obligation to come up with a fix...it is for anyone to place feedback about their problems as well as anyone who might know of a solution. I already thanked you for trying to help but as we said, it is still not resolved..and I am still hoping for a solution.
You gave me a link that referred me back to a post you made about this issue named Missing Files, It finally happened???? Think I know why... and the person that responded to it said, "Hi hope your day is well I spoke with a Motorola employee representative advised went sent as error there is not a location file is sent. Leslie"
This was of no help, so yes I am still in search of a solution...once again thank you for trying to help but the problems with the Picture and Video files on my DROID-X still remain.
If you have a Droid X or Droid 2 please take a random picture of anything, then go to the picture, rename it, and try viewing it again. I would greatly appreciate feedback

Ok, I know I am not obligated to find a solution but my point has been that from the information you gave that the files most likely are not recoverable, this is why no one else have replied, I have a good number of computer background and usually can figure out a solution or find information to resolve issue if it is possible, and I just dont see the files being recovered without using a 3rd party app. And the post was updated by Verizon Rep clearifing that Motorola reported that the files are not accessable to be recovered.
Well I wish you luck...
