Droid Not So Global?

I have the Droid 2 Global and have for about 6 months now. I know this question gets asked a lot but I keep getting different answers: I am going abroad (Spain) long term but I will be state side for 3 weeks at a time about every 3 months. I went to Verizon today to speak with someone about what the best solution would be and he suggested suspending my service while I am gone and this would still allow me to use my phone's wifi. I also intended on buying a local SIM card for it or an international SIM card which gives me a stateside number and a UK or EU number. Would this require me to unlock my phone? Can I just insert the new international SIM and still be able to use the wifi? I do not want to use the Verizon global SIM because of the high cost. I am throughly confused what the best option is. I really only need the phone for messaging and short phone calls. I intend on using skype/skype mobile for longer calls. I appreciate the help.

Hi KelRyan,

I understand your desire to unlock your global device to use in Spain with a local SIM card. To use another SIM card with your global device it is necessary to unlock your device's Subscriber Identity Module. While this is possible, please keep in mind that only Verizon Wireless Global Support Team completes the SIM Unlock procedure. Please contact our Global Support team at 9085594899, call is airtime free when calling from a Verizon Wireless global device. If you are in the United States please call 800-711-8300 for global support team.

The following qualifications must be met for the SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) to be unlocked:

Must be a Verizon Wireless customer.

  • The device being unlocked must be active on a Verizon Wireless line of service.
  • The line of service must be active at least 60 days.
  • The line of service must be in good standing for the past 60 days.
  • Only one SIM Unlock per line every 10 months.

You should be able to use your phone's WiFi capabilities even with another SIM after phone is unlocked by our global team.
