I currently use the USB modem for my wireless laptop internet access. I would like to change to the Droid X and tether or create my own wi-fi hotspot. This would give me internet access at home and more mobility on the road. Is this a feasible option?

I believe that the cost is either $20 or $30 more per month.

your laptop is your hotspot and can be used anyplace for the connection, if it's recieving the 3g wireless signal, if you select wi-fi on the phone.
no real need to pay verizon extra that i see.
the phone can be set on wi-fi and should automatically pickup any wireless signal in the area, encrypted or not.
whether you choose to use/know the key, that wi-fi signal is up to you.
the neighbor kid asked if i had wi-fi, i told him the name and he asked why he couldn't use it
my phone selects my wireless when i hit the door and drops 3g.
i run a wired/wireless router, which is on all the time, even though i'm on a hardwired pc at home.
i have a laptop for travel and my wife has her laptop, which she can move around the house.
it's encrypted, i entered the key the 1st time i used it and it'll work like that anyplace you go if you have the laptop with you and you're using it.
i've got another place i go to that has wireless, i've selected it and that's what the phone uses as long as i'm there, reverting to 3g when i leave.
as i'm in phx, az, and most of the valley area is 3g.

That's not quite true. The Laptop accesses WiFi as a RECEIVER ... not a BROADCASTER like a Router performs. Your Router is what sends out the WiFi signal .... unless somehow you have something in a laptop that broadcasts WiFi ... (is that what you have bearone?)
The point of the "Hot Spot" is really that your PHONE acts as the WiFi Broadcaster (like that router) so that other WiFi enabled devices (like Laptops or other phones) now are in the "hot spot" to be internet connected. To enable that on the Droid X requires the additonal $20/month FEE. (yea, I won't go *there* regarding nickel and diming etc.)
That all being said, I doubt you should expect DSL or high-speed internet type of speeds ... Yea, a convenience when travelling. And if you're intent would be to replace another DSL service to save money, you likely will be disappointed in the speed you get through the Hot Spot feature. I have not purchased this plan so don't have any real world experience with it, but this is what many have suggested. YMMV.

you're right, i'm picking it off the router, never mind.
i'll use it out in the middle of no-where at a truckstop or macdonald's on the reservation where there's no 3g.
