I had hoped with the update this problem would go away, but... no dice.
FREQUENTLY I get the messaging stopped error. Most often when trying to send a picture, but not always.
Often when I try to send a picture-to another verizon phone on my account-messaging will either stop or the picture takes hours to days to send. I can't delete the message to stop it from trying to send.
I've had a similar problem receiving picture messages. My notifications will show that there is an unread message, but there is nothing there for hours. Then out of the blue a picture message will finally show up.
I've tried a reset (power and volume down) as the guy in the verizon store told me to do.

I ended up doing a factory reset and did not restore my settings - am able to receive picture messages so far. I did notice my system updates appeared to not have been updated, but when I would click to update, I got a notification that I was (in fact) up to date. I also saw an 'update deferred' message. Since the hard reset everything looks and is working well.

I regret to learn of the issues when sending a message, RGilbert! Does this happen while on WiFi? If so, turn off WiFi and test it out with the Mobile Network. Did you try to test out the messaging in safe mode? If not, here is how: http://www.verizonwireless.com/support/devices/knowledge_base.html/83030/
Test out and let us know how it goes.
Thank you,

I've had the exact same problem since the recent Verizon update v4.4 19.6.3 for droid maxx. It will take 10 attempts to successfully open a picture message before the app force closes. My next step will be deleting all my messages (although my old iPhone would keep messages forever!) Really hope this gets fixed soon

I'm sorry to learn you are having this same issue, jplotstein. When you are trying to open a picture message is your Wi-Fi set to off? Please try clearing the cache by going to Settings>Apps>All>Messages and select Clear Cache. Let us know if you notice improvement.

Also having this problem since the update. Showing messages in the notification bar but when I open there's nothing there. Have had test picture messages sent from iPhone and android and can't receive either although the notification makes it appear as though they are waiting to be opened. Have cleared cache, have turned off WiFi, have tried changing settings. Even if turning off WiFi worked that is not a long term fix - I am not going to manually turn it on when I need it. Need a fix please!!

hi linds_pang. You have to make sure that your "Data" is on <settings>data usage> toggle "on" in order to send/receive mms messages. It will not work over wifi

That's how my settings are set. Not receiving picture MMS. Can receive group chat MMS. Used to be able to but not since the update.

Is it still an issue for you? I have had this problem since Feb. Went through the troubleshooting you did, and then a factory reset twice. I still have issues with this.

Verizon please actually do something... Asking everyone if they have done the same troubleshooting BS is not helping. Obviously people are still having issues. This is even the reason I made an account. We are paying to be able to send and receive pictures and it sounds like most people randomly had this happen after the update, meaning they didn't break it, you did. Have your engineers and software people go through whatever they did and find the problem, issue another update that deletes the last one, DO SOMETHING! I have had so many weird things happening to my phone the last year or so and even got a new phone but it looks like instead I should get a new service.

2) Go to Play Store....Search >messaging classsic kitkat 4.4< .....Install
Once you have done this and you do not like it you may want to see my forum in search under

Downloaded that app and no luck. Anyone else have luck with it? Wondering if I'll have to do a factory reset and if that will even help?

linds_pang, we want to help you in any way that we can. Let's make sure that this isn't a memory capacity issue. Try deleting all unwanted text messages on your device, power it off/on and disable Wi-Fi. Connect to our network and test the text messaging feature. Keep us posted.

Is anyone answering anymore? Or did everyone just give up because every Ultra owner has this problem and it's easier not to deal?

It's apparently easier not to deal - my fix/last resort was a hard reset, and I got no real solutions to allow me to do otherwise. If you're desperate, the hard reset did fix my problems (albeit a pain to do).

I am getting so frustrated!!! It's been trying to receive a picture message for about 24 hours now. Wifi is off. I've cleared caches, deleted everything I can delete, tried everything in this thread and... All it's doing is heating my phone up and running the battery dead. It says there's a message there... no message. Every time it does this a picture comes through eventually. I can't be doing this. I am a photographer and people send me pictures of things they want to use for posing ALL OF THE TIME. This is crippling!

I'm still having nothing but problems with messaging since the last update. I've had a message notification for several hours now, no message. Wireless is off. Data is on. I know that when it does come in it will be a picture.
Messaging ap shuts down repeatedly when trying to open a random message quite often. Doesn't even have to be a picture message. I'll just get the messaging stopped message. Have to power down and back up again before I can read the message and hope it works.
Before this update I kept my phone constantly logged into our wireless at home with no problems. Not sure why I should have to have my data logged out of the wireless in order to receive a picture message on the verizon network.
It also no longer will vibrate AND sound for a message. If vibrate is on it will not make a sound. That's a pain in the butt.
I have a game that now works sometimes, sometimes it doesn't and will freeze up the phone. Pretty sure the wireless is what's interfering with that too.
Google Now pops up randomly when in complete silence-that's creepy in the dead of the night. Sometimes Google Now randomly calls someone-this just started the other day. I couldn't make it stop.
I loved my phone until this update, but now it seems that the phones different services/applications are all interfering with each other.
I've done the soft reset on the phone. I've followed the instructions here... Yeah. Not working for me.
