Droid X...A Blackberry User's First Impressions

Hi, all,

Some of you may know me as being an avid Blackberry user from these forums. I recently was able to get my hands on a Motorola Droid X and wanted to give my impressions. My sister, who was a former Blackberry user, purchased one of the Droid Xs last week and allowed me to put it through the paces. First, the size. I was really impressed. I own an iPad Touch, which pretty much is just like a iPhone. The Droid X stood out to me because of its screen size. It is much larger than I expected. The Droid X has a very bright and colorful screen. It is not very heavy or bulky to me. I was thinking the touch screen would be like touching the Blackberry Storm, but it is not. It is just like using the iPhone or iPad Touch. Setting up email accounts was not too much of a hassel. The 3G connection was a good, fast connection for browsing the internet. The native browser is nice, although I would have liked to seen how Opera Mini 5.0 would have done on the device. WiFi worked really well. No problems connecting to a hotspot. Another big plus for the Droid X is the ability to add a SD card for storage. This is nice especially since the iPhone does not allow the user to add an SD card.

I did not get but a few minutes to play with the Droid X, but it was time well spent. I really like the touch screen on the Droid X. If you are a user wanting a good device with an "iPhone-like" screen, the Droid X is for you. I am curious, as a Blackberry user, what devices RIM will come out with in the near future to compete with the ever-growing Droid line of devices. Anyways, I just wanted to pass along a few of my impressions of the Motorola Droid X.

I, myself, own an iPhone. I bought it from someone on Craig's List and I was going to jailbreak it and use a different carrier, but changed my mind. I'm a Verizon customer, so my iPhone is just a fancier iPod Touch that can't make calls. That's fine with me because I really can't stand AT&T. From other posts in these forums, some individuals are boasting that AT&T has superior customer service over Verizon. Too bad the same thing can't be said about their coverage. Everyone is going to experience bad customer service with just about every company out there. If it hasn't happened to you yet....it WILL. I ordered my Droid X on 8/12, and I expect to receive it at any time between now and the end of the month. Why am I not stomping my feet and throwing a tantrum ? Because I understand business......I understand supply and demand....and I have patience. Yes....Verizon charged me for the phone already. No, they haven't shipped it.....but they will. Whether they get my money now...or when the phone is shipped...makes no difference. Its BACKORDERED people. Give them time. I'm still using my LG enV Touch currently, and I can wait a little longer for my X.

The Droid X is extremely popular right now, and Verizon can't keep it in stock. People don't get their phones when they thought they would, and begin to blame Verizon for it. How can Verizon ship something they don't have ? Jump on Motorola and plead with them to ship more to Verizon. And don't get me started on these Customer Service complaints. So far, every customer service representative I've spoken to was honest and upfront with me. When you know that the phone is back-ordered and may not ship until 8/30....and then you believe a store employee that tells you "you'll have it in two or three days".......that's you indulging in an unrealistic expectation...and then blaming the company for it when it doesn't happen.

Now...someone on these forums may argue that the employee represents Verizon, and whatever comes out of the employee's mouth must be honored by Verizon. That's true up to a point. I signed up with Verizon and was told at the store that there would be no activation fee. When I got my bill, it had been charged an activation fee. I called Verizon and explained what happened. The customer service rep honored what the store employee told me, and removed the activation fee from my bill. HOWEVER, when it comes to a brand new product that has clearly sold out across the country....and Verizon is jumping up and down waiting for Motorola to send more........Verizon cannot pull a "Harry Potter" by waving a magic wand and produce a Droid X just for you.....simply because a retail store employee told you that. Do you honestly believe you'll get the phone in a matter of days when the rest of the world is waiting for mid to late August ? Don't blame Verizon in this case. Blame the human being that misinformed you. Someone at Customer Service lied to you ? Don't blame Verizon. Blame the individual sitting in the call center that will tell you what you want to hear, while the supervisor is out of earshot.....just to avoid being yelled at by you. I work in a call center. I hear things coming out of employees' mouths that I KNOW my company does not endorse. That's not my company's fault. That's the fault of the genius on the headset who's gonna get FIRED when Quality Assurance monitors one of those calls.

If you're reading this, Doc.....my apologies. What was meant to be a post, welcoming you with open arms into the world of Droid, has turned into a huge rant against those with the patience span of about a nanosecond. I've read countless posts where Customer Service is being bashed left and right. I just couldn't stand it any longer. No.....Verizon doesn't have me in their back pocket. I've only had my account with them for a couple of months, and my impression of their company is still forming. So far so good. Enough of the Verizon-flaming already. You don't like Verizon ? Go buy an iPhone. I'll see you back on the Verizon network in about a year or two.

I agree with your post. I have seen the same thing across other boards with users having problems and blaming the carrier. I have used ATT before and they worked ok for the most part for me. However, where I live now, I can not get a good signal. Verizon has a great signal at my home as well as Cellular South. Anyways, back to the Droid X. It is a hot selling device and those shipments are underway, as I understand. So, all of those backordered Droids will be arriving soon. My New Every Two upgrade date is not for another 8 months, so I have some time to see what new devices come out in the next few months. I am making a list of devices I like, listing the pros and cons. As my upgrade date arrives, I will narrow the list down and make my decision. Right now, the Droid X is at the top. Good luck to you and all others who are expecting delivery of a new Droid X.

Well said, AF. I, fortunately, committed to getting my Droid X the same day it was released (hooray for Costco having 15 units) and haven't been happier leaving my Crackberry behind!

Customer service is sometimes what you make it. The "nanosecond" generation needs to take a freakin' chill pill and get a life...and a dose of reality.

Anyways, kudos to you for a well written and sobering reminder that often the populace is just a bunch of whiners.

I'm a BB user for 2 1/2 years. When I got my real estate license I was told I needed a BB to get e-mails right away and stay in contact with clients, etc. So, I got a Pearl ... and hated it at first. After a week of getting used to it, I loved it and was the typical crackberry user: always on it ... texting ... etc! OY!

My contract was up in January and I patiently waited for the iPhone to come to Verizon. For personal reasons, I will never have AT7T service. Plus their network pales in comparison to Verizon's reliable network. I had heard that the iPhone was coming to Verizon in June/July 2010. Well, that came and went. When I went on vacation with friends, their iPhones had more access to things than my laptop with the hotel's bad network. So I got home and started investigating possibly getting a new phone now instead of waiting until January 2011 (the new iPhone possible release). I looked into this thing called DRRROOIIIIIIDDDD!

The Droid X had so many wonderful reviews and in such a short time of being available. It seems very similar (if not better) than the iPhone that I decided to take the plunge. Worst case, if I hated it I could always return to my crackberry. I ordered the Droid X on 7/30 and received it on 8/10. After 4 days, my feelings are iPhone who? Crackberry Who? I'm a Droid X lover all the way!

Every day I find more and more things to love about this phone. There are a few crinkles ... like trying to figure out how to add contacts from my All Contacts area to my Phone Contacts group. And why my Phone Contacts group only has the entries I had in a Businesses group I set up for restaurants, stores, etc that I call frequently. OY!

So from another former Blackberry user, I say DRRRRRROOOOIIIIDDDD all the way!

So that is why you have not been posting much Doc. You've been playing around with the Droid X! :smileyvery-happy: All android phones support an sd card. I think most of the newer android phones can support up to a 32GB memory card which is pretty huge. My android phone I think supports up to that much. Although I only have a 16GB sd card which suits me perfectly. iPhone doesn't have a removable sd card? Hahahaha. Wow never knew that. You learn something new every day.

Droid does do everything

So StreetDoc will you be converting to a nice droid or another type of android phone on your next upgrade? So long live the blackberry king? Shall we call you maybe an androind king now.

I have a Storm 2 for work and have been a Blackberry fan for quite some time. I have a DroidX on order for a personal phone. My contract ends with AT&T on the 25th so I will switch to Verizon. I like Verizon's plans better than AT&T. I have never had a problem with AT&T but Verizon will work better for me. I will post when I get the DroidX. I did play with it in the store and so far I like it, enough so I ordered one.

It should be fun.

Hi, A couple of days ago I installed the Dolphin Browser on my Motorola Droid with 2.2 update and I love it. It's fast and efficient and it's free at the Droid App Market. I use it as the default browser now.

A good browser yes,but takes up too much space on a phone

I am also a proud DX'er.

I came from a BB Storm 2. Prior to the Storm, my touch screen experience was limited to a first generation Ipod Touch. I was creeped out when the Storm did not work as fluidly as the Ipod.

Back then, what sold me on the Storm was the depth of apps already available. Droid was just starting out and did not have much to offer. If they had been just a little more developed I might have been trading up from a Droid 1 to a Droid X.

All this being said, I love my Droid X. I have had it for about a month and it has surpassed my expectations. While there are some apps that you can only find on Itunes, I am finding that just about every app I have on my Ipod has a ported version for the Droid. I am also seeing that a lot of the apps that I paid for on my Storm and Touch are free on the droid. And those you have to pay for cost a lot less here.

All in all, this is a great phone. Its speedy, it looks great, the screen is awesome for watching video.

Now if we can only get Big Red to let loose their death grip on the Android 2.2 update, then I bet we will all be a lot happier.

I still have a Storm2 for work and it is a great phone but I am very impressed with the DroidX. I got it for my personal phone and so far I am very impressed. Blackberry can compete in the consumer field but they need to make some changes for sure. Business wise I think the Blackberry is a great choice.

I am just curious to know,do blackberry phones have like their own market? Like android phones have the ability to access the android market.

I use a blackberry curve with Nextel and although I have not received the droid yet, I cant wat for it to arrive. I have big hands and am a bit nervous about the touchscreen versus the keypad but know after a week or two of playing I will get used to it

I find that in portrait view the X is a bit too big for my hands so I usually do everything in landscape view......If you have bigger hands then the portrait view will work nicely for you! The X is and oustanding phone. As with any device out there you can always find a few areas for improvement but overall no complaints from this guy!!!

Is there a way to transfer everything from Blackberry Pearl to the Droid X using the Blackberry Desktop Manager?
