Droid X Locking up and Rebooting

Curious if anyone else has had their Droid X randomly freeze up, then suddenly poweer off or reboot itself? It seems to happen about once a day. I can't detect any particular pattern. It happened once during a phone call. The call just went dead, the screen appeared to be frozen for about 5 seconds, then the whole thing powered off and rebooted. The other times it happened I was in the middle of texting or looking at something with the web browser, when the device froze and then suddenly rebooted? Not sure if this is unique to my Droid X or a more common problem?

Try doing a battery pull to see if this helps. I have checked to see if it was a known issue and it was not.  HTH!

It SHOULD be a known issue.  It's all over the forums and I've had the issue myself and I called about it.  It's very frustrating to call tech support and hear "It's not a known issue".  I know I'm not the only one that called.

I am having this problem with my Droid X as well.  Not every day, but often.  I have called VZW tech support and motorola tech support.  I was told that it was not a known issue as well, and was told to take my Droid X into a store and let a rep troubleshoot it.  I have done factory reset twice and the last time I did not install any apps afterwards and still had the rebooting.  If you google search droid x reboot, you will see where many, many others are having this problem too.  :smileysad:

I've had my Droid X for about six months and it just started locking up about two weeks ago.  I deleted the apps that I added in the past month and it still does it.  My system version is 2.3.340 Andriod version 2.2.1.

For what it's worth, I think they need a statistically significant amount of data to make it a 'known issue'.

I do not believe bringing the issue to light on message boards, forums, or other public forums actually counts as they (Verizon) cannot mine the data and see it as a recurring issue.

Your best bet (and all of our best bets) is to call Verizon and bring it to their attention.

I was experiencing the exact same problem the day after I got the Droid X (received it day after it released).  It appears as if whatever update was recently pushed has somewhat fixed the problem; I haven't seen any reboot issues since.

Motorola is aware of the problem - - check out the Motorola support forums on this - - very lengthy thread on it - see below link.

Happened a few times the first day I had my phone. I did a factory wipe and it hasn't happened since.

Factory reset may fix, battery pull, delete all third party apps, or try loading a cpu temp monitor widget "could be overheating". Good luck

How hot is too hot? When I had wifi tether running, it got up to 41C, but at the moment, it is only 25C.

19 pages worth of reading there.:smileysurprised:    My Droid-X also has the same issue. It IS a known issue.

From one of the Motorola engineers in the thread:

"

Well, we tried. But it looks now like understanding the reasons this small number of phones experience regular reboots is going to take some time and investigation. If your rebooting problem is serious, at this time I think you should consider taking it back to your place of purchase for an exchange. It's your call -- mine rebooted the other day, and it did it a couple of times in the first week that I started using it. For me, that's not a big deal. My PC crashes sometimes too. But if you can't rely on the phone, that's different.

Again, thanks for the help and patience!

I'm sorry I have to believe this is a false posting. With the amount of replacements going out to customers and knowing that Verizon Call Centers Reps have to log their call your statement would suggest Verizon is incompetent or on the verge of pulling similar fiasco to Apples Attennagate.

The longer you act as though nothing is wrong, the more customers are going to add to the pages of Motorolas thread (19+) pages. When it does hit main stream media Verizon is going to look like as shady as Apple's response.

What makes matters worse Motorola has acknowledged the situationa and had the integrity to say they have no fix at the current time while suggesting users replace the phone through Verizon.

Matt Re: Droid X - Rebooting on its own Just recapping the headlines that I posted here.
Chronic rebooting appears to be rare and we're still working on
understanding the root cause. An exchange appears to be your best bet at
this time. I
... would say that getting two Xs that reboot is terrible luck. I would say
getting three is some kind of problem with applications or other
circumstance particular to the user. Sorry for the hassles. We do our best to alert our agents and our partners of Verizon about issues but it's not automatic.

Had to reply - saw that this forum was referenced in the Motorola forum....and of course, I laughed out loud when I read for at least the 10th time where Vz Wireless rep said they had not heard of this reboot issue.

I know Verizon is not a mom and pop store.  I know that compared to the millions of devices they support, the Droid X isn't obviously their biggest concern - but to not know of the problem at all? Again?

I have quite a few posts on the Motorola forum (too, not a small mom and pop store!!) and I had to get a replacement.  My first Droid X - yeah, I got the same answer when I reported it to Vz.  Oh well - the bottom line, my second X is fine - hasn't rebooted in the week I have had it.  But I and MANY others had/have had issues with it rebooting.  Some as many as 30 times in a day!

Verizon - wake up and smell the hostility brewing around this phone/OS and some of its users - there is a problem and the cause has yet to be determined.   It happened before the last 2.1 update...it happened after...it has happened with new apps, with it straight out of the new box.  So to say 2.2 is the 'fix' - I won't hold my breath!  Bad batch, over heating, processor issues...take your pick, maybe we will never know!

yeah i thought it was something else too. Just a suggestion here. when i initially got my droid x, they transfered the contacts from my winmo device before i setup my google account, this caused all kinds of issues, the phone would reboot everytime i went into the phone tab and tried to click on the contacts to make a call from within that app. This however did not happen when i went directly into contacts from the main page.

I did a factory reset, loaded my google account, reloaded my contacts from MiQ (a free backup service offered by best buy) and haven't had "as many" reboot issues.

The phone still reboots maybe every two or three days while it's doing NOTHING so it can't be temp related but it's a lot let problematic than it was previosly.

My main issue now is the battery life. it will die, with no apps running, no texting, or surfing, w/i 5 hours in a 3g area.....

if they can figure that out I'd be happy, maybe a swap out for droid 2 instead....

thoughts anyone?

This just happened to me at 7:33am today, 8/10. My droid was lying on the desk idling in 3G mode. Suddenly I noticed the bat wings came up on the screen out of the corner of my eye. This was spontaneous. I had not touched the device for several minutes. Kinda makes you wasn't to throw the friggin phone. Who can depend on this device for phone communication?

Just adding my "IT IS A KNOWN ISSUE" to the mix, to wake the tech support up.

I just ended up with the same problem last night.  I couldnt even turn off droid without taking out battery.  I did a hard boot. Thank goodness I had appbrain to re install my apps!  I replaced battery, was installing all my apps and when I loaded an app called "battery status - free" the droid went back into a reboot mode.  I had to hard boot again and re install.  This time I did not install the battery status -free and so far so good.

I wouldnt think that this would be a phone problem, as it might be some of the applications.  I have bought computers and they run just fine until some applications come thru that are not very compatibly with it.  Since I was for now able to resolve without a new phone, as well as some other people, maybe try the hard re boot first.

Most of the rebooting and freezing isues usually comes from a uncompatible app installed, the solution to this is to try removing all installed apps other than stock and see if the problem stops, so many say that the replacement device does the same thing as the one they sent back, this usually means that the issue may not be the device but something added to the device...  After owning a Windows device you usually develope this as a second thought because the chance of two seperate devices having the same exact issue is very slim..

This is STILL an issue. I picked up an X on 2/18/11. First locked up in Verizon parking lot.

Took it home for full charge. Has continued to lock up frequently every day, with or without

apps being added. Have also reduced running apps to minimum.

I'll be going back to Verizon on 2/21/11 to have the phone replaced. I like the phone

when it runs..............Getting REALLY good at removing the battery and replacing it.....

which temporarily fixes the problem.

Hopefully, a replacement will solve the problem.

This phone does warm up with use or when idle. I suspect

overheating may affect a number of these phones.

Well...after reading these posts, I don't feel as crazy thinking I was the only one experiencing this issue. I know people do post false threads to gain support for other products, but I can tell you without any apprehension that this thread is absolutely On the up and up. So far, from everything I have read, no one has experiences this issue to the leek I have. I have had my droid x replaced 8 times...and that does not fix the "Power Cycling" issue. Verizon says not a known issue yet that is THEIR term for what we are experiencing. I had physical problems with the first 4 phones...it wasn't until the last 4 that I started having these power cycling issues. I have had 3 factory refurb'ed phones sent to me and one brand new one at the store. It doesn't matter. The phone still does it. There is no rhyme or reason as to when. It does it without any 3rd party apps installed, during calls, surfing the web, emails and text msgs, being charged or just sitting there doing nothing. The worst was 25 times in one day.

It seems to have started after the 2.3.340 update...that's when I started noticing it. My droid x does it and so does my wife's. I got the phone on release date. I have done everything. Different battery, sd card, no third party apps, factory resets and replacing phones. The only conclusion Incan come to is that it relates to the last OS release. It has been so frustrating that I purchased an iPhone 4 2 days ago just so I could have a phone that didn't restart during a call with my customers or during a web event...paying bills, shopping or just simple surfing.

I love my droid and miss it. This iPhone is too small...I love my 4.3" screen and all of the things the X does. I still have it and my plan is to start using it again when the next version of android is released to the public. Does anyone know when that is? I love my X and want it back...but cannot deal with this issue any longer.

Verizon customer service has no answers...not in their database as a known issue yet there have been multiple customer contacting them about this...not just me. The biggest reason I went out and bought the iPhone was because the way the customer service rep talked to menduring my last call to them about this. Understanding my frustration in dealing with this issue for the past couple months...I have 5 phones with data plans and spend over $300 a month for this service and have been with Verizon for the past 11 years. She spoke to manlike I was a 15 year old that jut got a $19.00 mo plan with a free phone and haven't paid my bill...like I have nothing better to do that whine and want a new phone when mine gets dirty. I don't feel I should have to pay that much money every month for something that doesn't work properly. Don't get wrong, I have had very positive assistance from customer service...but this last lady was all, "sir, we have gone above and beyond in trying to fix your issue...". Ya, sending me factory refurbished phones with damaged screens, DOA and buttons physically broken is going above and beyond. It's a shame that customer service has dropped to the level it has.

I want my droid x to work like it is supposed to. That's all. I believe Google Is the source of this problem...with everything I have tried, it seems to fall back to the Android OS 2.3.340. Hopefully the next update will correct it and if anyone knows when that update will come out, please post it. Thank you for reading.
