Droid X Screen Possessed

I have been having a couple problems with my Droid X handset and was wondering if anyone out there has any suggestions on what might be causing it.
The Droid X is about 2 months old, and I use a motorola media dock to charge it at night. Very few third party apps were installed by me to begin with, and I have been selectively deleting them as this problem has increased, in an attempt to try to figure out if this is software related. I am considering a factory reset to rule out a bad app once and for all, but don't want to take that step unless it seems necessary.
In the middle of the night, the Droid X has an annoying habit of randomly starting the media player application and playing music. Usually this occurs in the middle of the night, waking me up. It is not alarm-related. Further, during the night, the Droid X will randomly add widgets to the bottom bar of the media dock screen. It's as if someone is pressing the screen in various areas, but it occurs overnight when no one has come near it.
Further, the Droid X screen is becoming more and more unresponsive in general use. I will wake the screen up and attempt to unlock the phone by dragging my finger across the screen, but the touch will not register. I can often get it to work eventually, by keeping at it. However, when I do get the phone unlocked, the touch screen often takes on a mind of its own and starts activating itself - ie, bringing up the alarm app and turning on and off alarms, despite my not having touched the screen. I have even been in the position of it pressing the emergency call button unprompted and attempting to call out (but failing, thankfully).
I will likely take it to a verizon store if the various software solutions I have been trying fail. Is there something short of a factory reset I can do, and if a factory reset doesn't fix it, does it sound like a defective screen?

Do you have an extended battery with the standard back? Is the battery swollen? Both can put pressure on the screen and internal parts causing random problems like you are reporting. If not then my guess is you still have a hardware problem and not a software one. Return it to Verizon for a replacement.

I have three wild guesses:
1) Your battery might be messed up as already suggested. This would be my guess on the screen problem.
2) Your home dock might be messed up causing the alarm problem. Try the wall charger to see if that could be the case.
3) My last guess is that it is hardware related and not software/apps related.
It appears you've done all the right things as far as looking at your apps, so you probably can rule that out. Too bad you can't delete and re-install the alarm apps to see if that could be the problem.

I do not have an extended battery. The Droid X unit in question is as close to stock as these things come 60ish days after purchase.
I did perform a factory reset with VZW tech support yesterday, and the issues continue. Looks like I'll be calling back for a replacement. It does seem as if the issue involves the touchscreen, not the software.
Thanks for the advice.

I have no helpful advice for this, but just thought I'd share another 'paranormal' experience. The other day, I picked up the phone from the kitchen table but fumbled it. When it hit the table (thankfully only dropped less than an inch), the TV in the kitchen turned on! (and, no, the TV is not on the table).

My old Droid (1) with the dock did the same thing, and I believe it was electrical interference from the nightstand lamp I used...
Trial and error led me to believe it was that (moving the dock away from the lamp, versus closer...).
Best of luck!

My husband and I have identical Motorola Droids which turned a year old in June 2011. Yesterday, his phone started showing strange symptoms of a malfunction. Screen flickering, changing apps, dialing numbers; you name it, the Droid was doing it alone. Of course, I have read all the forums from Android forums on this topic and similar symptoms, to this forum. Check off what we have tried to correct the issue: Dropped battery, pulled SD card and restarted phone w/out battery, dumped applications (none are ever incompatable with Droid), no viruses present, battery fine, phone never wet, charger is stock w/phone, removed apps from SD card (as many as possible). Basically, everything stated to try short of getting a new phone has been tried. He also did a back up and factory reset to no avail.
I've read repeatedly applications can cause this. Any clue which ones? I'm thinking screen may just have a short life and this is an issue common. My question is: What has worked to fix this and if it is the screen, I imagine the phone is junk?
I think it interesting this is happening with such a high frequency at 12-15 months. Makes me wonder of the quality of the touch screen.
Thoughts? Suggestions?
