EDIT: Oh, good, I can still post this here. I just finished running the phone through all of the tricks that I usually do (websites, mail, widgets, Facebook, etc...) and everything is fine. My biggest issue after the 2.2 update was the battery manager force-closing when I tried to check use statistics. I just opened the usage statistics 5 times and it worked every time. I didn't try the player, since I have 3 iPods full of WAV files, I have no need to play music on the DX. Now I need to update my new DX...

Help a newbie understand what update this is. I assume this isn't gingerbread, correct? Is this the fix for 2.2? I am still running 2.1 and wanted to wait for a stable update so I have been delaying the 2.2 update. I have never checked for firmware updates on my phone before and wondered if I do check, will it list what version is available for update or does it start downloading right away? Is this also available for everyone right now?

Also, can I go from 2.1 to the latest update?

I would venture to say that yes, it is probably being rolled out at different times for different places. When I first attempted to get the update, it said update was not currently available. I restarted my phone and then it took the update.

I would also venture to say that yes, you can get this update from 2.1 without getting 2.2 first. Or passing "Go". Or collecting $200 (okay, showing my age).

Thank you. One other question is when I have my phone search for an update does it show what update is available or does it just start downloading it automatically if one is available?

It will inform you that an update (no choices, just the most current update) is available and you can start the download or it will start in 30 (?) or so seconds.

Looks like the update wasn't supposed to be pushed to EVERYONE yet...

This sucks because I got the update notification this morning and didn't update immediately. Now when I try to pull it manually, it tells me my device is up to date.

Yes, I got the update (on my Droid X, by the way). No, I'm not a member of the Motorola Feedback Team. And I'm not having any issues so far.

No, it will not update automatically. You will have to press "download" to start the download, then you will be prompted to install the update, which you will press another button to initiate the install.

That verizon support page was updated Monday. They did the same thing with Froyo for X.. they loaded the support page about 3 days before the actual release of the update from 2.1 to 2.2

I have a Droid X, and I downloaded the upgrade this morning. Had to do it manually, it did not come to me automatically. So far, so good (hopefully it stays that way).

It has been temporarily pulled for the X. As stated in a earlier post topic. I, like a few others, downloaded the update. So it was out there. But, some people were having issues with the download (some not completing, some having 3g issues after the download, and a few other problems). It looks like we the few on this site who got it did not get those problems. But, until they figure out what is causing the problms to the few, they have pulled it for the X.

Also, I was not part of the Motorola test group who were originally supposed to test the release.

Never believe what an employee from any company tells you unless you get it in writing.

I wouldn't even believe writing either... I have received many **bleep** email replies from VZW. Its just Verizon employees who are not properly trained for their positions

By the way, it was Motorola that pushed the "test update"... not Verizon. The update wasn't intended to even be publicized.. it was intended for a select few to test. Verizon has already updated the droid x software support page, just like they did prior to the 2.2 release. This is why Verizon doesn't know anything about the X update. Once again, poor communication between VZW-Motorola and their customers.

Or misunderstood. The release was for all Droid 2 phones and only for certain members of the Moto test forum for the X. But, was (accidently?) sent out to others. So the Rep might of meant that it was, for now, only for the droid 2 and should of also said the x update would follow shortly.

As a side note to some of my comments on problems being reported by some who had the update and this is why it was pulled.

Some of the problems might of been unrelated to the update (3G problems on Verizons side vs. update causing). so my guess is that it was pulled strictly due to the fact that it was only suppossed to go out to some who were to report back with any problems and they realised the mistake and pulled it back until Moto plans on releasing it to all. As far as to when that is, I have heard a day, a couple days, a week or two. so who knows. but, I am sure they will wiat til all bugs that may be reported are confirmed and fixed. As far as I can tell not a huge difference with this update. But, I will say that I never had any of the reported problems from the Froyo update that are said to be fixed in this update. and Madden NFL is just a demo so who cares.

No issues here, either. Yeah, I noticed the dialer features later on in the morning. I guess we squeaked in under the radar on this one, LOL.

I just hope that when they release the update again (!!), it doesn't cause you and me problems. I don't know why it would, but ya just never know... :smileyhappy:

I believe there is some confusion on this 2.3.340 update.... it is a System update, NOT an update to our Android version 2.2.1.

Details - Go to Settings, scroll down to "About phone" at the bottom. you'll see System version listed fifth, and Android version listed 7th.

Not sure what you mean, 2.3.340 was a bug fix update that also was a update to android version from 2.2 to 2.2.1 so what is the confusion?

EDIT: Nevermind. Rebooting out of box. That would be frustrating. You did let the phone charge completely before starting and activating the new phone? Maybe you should get a different battery. It could something wrong with the battery.

I've questioned why no one has noticed the trend of the 5-10% of Droid X owners dissatisfied with their phones say that rebooting was the major issue and that they went through SEVERAL phones trying to resolve it.

Could it be using the same SD Card and battery, since those are transferred from the phone in-use to the replacement phone?

Could it be that the phones that are returned have a problem that is not being repaired and they are sent right back out as replacements?

Read the product reviews on the Verizon.com product page for the Droid X and read the other five Droid X forums. Most with rebooting issues have not had it resolved with replacement phones. But, that is the solution that Verizon is offering.

Resets don't help. Formatting the SD Card doesn't help.

Maybe, other than insinuating that I am doing something wrong, you could offer some of your (no disrespect) "Bronze Contributing" advice.

THAT would be appreciated. No you didn"t "hurt my feelings". But, I have been posting in hope that someone who knows more about this phone than I could offer some real advice.

If you think about it, your post not only wasn't helpful, it WAS insulting.

But, I don't care about that. I just want my phone to go more than half an hour without rebooting.

Actually, I have several more thoughts than I posted, I could probably write a page on the matter that involves all parties.

However, the damage has been done, pretty much as I expected it to be, so I see no more purpose in my participation on the discussion.

I've even offered to buy one of these rebooting phones to play with and figure out something, I dong hear of anyone just simply SEEING what is going on without the anger and frustrations of the owner being party of the dynamic (which I fully understand), but in all cases, the phones were needed for exchange.

I read this forum, the Motorola, Android, and three Droid X forums. I'm not going to make any friends by saying this, but I only go to these forums looking for assistance with an issue, or maybe to offer any of my own knowledge and experience to others.

I have noticed in all of these forums, a lot of so-called "Super Moderators", "Experts", etc.

I'm not saying they don't know a lot. But, they don't know it all. The majority of them are fine answering questions about how to change font size, or which app is good for U.I. launching.

But, hit them with something they can't answer and the double-talk, insults, talking down to, and overall indignation starts showing up. Don't EVER question one of them.

The avatars and photos and cute little quotes in the signature lines of their posts are real impressive. Hey folks, these are forums about phones, for crying out loud, NOT Facebook.

Are we interrupting your little social scene with our pesky question that you can't answer?

And, if you don't know the answer. Would it be so bad to say, "I don't know", without insulting the person with the question you can't answer?

Okay, I just deleted what I would consider a masterpiece response. I just didn't see the point. The forum owners are generous and (fairly) tolerant with their bandwidth and this conversation has become something that does nothing to honor their generosity. While this response was some of my finest work, it wouldn't have stopped this nonsense once and for all (and this one won't, either) and would have probably gotten me banned....

So 2 quick points...

(1) Yeah, I'll say it, I think you are doing something to cause your problems. I can't prove it, but I can think it. You don't like, tough. I know why these phones are returned and seem to not be repaired...because they can't find anything wrong with them to start with...

(2) Please go get an iPhone so you can terrorize AT&T when the signal starts going up and down. And THEY won't tell you what you want to hear, either.

I too have had a problem with random rebooting since the update.. For me, it seems it likes to reboot when I am either on facebook, the internet, or texting and I switch my view from landscape to portrait.. I can always tell it is going to reboot because it will just freeze for a split second.. I think I am going to uninstall LauncherPro and see if that helps!

And I truly hope that helps. I''ve no idea if it will.

I'm wondering if anyone has been able to run one of the stats apps (monitoring CPU usage, memory usage, etc.) when they have a phone that is constantly re-booting like this. It would probably be difficult under the random-ness circumstances of that issue. Not to mention that I'd be shocked if no one else has thought about trying this.

I've also wondered about physical battery size issues. We used to see this on some of the first Moto Star-Tacs where the battery terminals would get dirty or the lose the tension and drop contact with the battery from time to time. However, with the relationship of updates to the subsequent re-booting issues, I don't thus to be the case, although it takes just a second to check.

There is also the case to be made that phones should be factory-restored before allowing any OS updates, but that case had been made over and over again. I subscribe to that idea whole-heartedly, but I've never had the re-booting issues. Which, I suppose should disqualify me from commenting one way or the other, according to recent comments, eh?... :smileyhappy:

Wildman - my local Verizon store rep says this is not an approved Verizon system and that's why I can't download it to my phone. When I try I get the message "check for update was not available" - what's your response?

Your thoughts about the rebooting occurring after landscape/portrait rotations, really sounds interesting.

Up to now, it seems that every time I think I've noticed the rebooting to be occurring during certain actions (browsing), or activities (listening to music); it usually ends up being cooincidence and merely the law of averages (i.e. rebooting is more likely to occur when browsing, if that is what you do the most).

I was convinced of this when my replacement phone rebooted as I was merely scanning through the App Drawer and arranging my Homescreens.

I've never given much thought to the landscape/portrait rotating of the phone being a "trigger".

I will pay very close attention to that.

I am NOT the only Droid X owner experiencing random reboots. Read the Product reviews on this very site. Read the other 5 Droid X forums.

Are WE ALL doing something wrong? Is it ALL OUR faults? Our habits?

If "habits" include rotating the phone from landscape to portrait and that turns out to be the cause (as McLeod proposed as a possibilty), are we to blame for that?

You accused me of me "causing" this without offering any theories, thoughts, or ideas on what I "should stop doing" to make the rebooting stop.

People experiencing these reboots come to forums like this looking for answers.

NOT to be told we are causing it, just by using our phones.

Ya know, I found out tonight that a close friend was diagnosed with liver cancer and given 8 -12 weeks to live. Just got off of the phone with his wife.

Honestly I still think you should give a new and different battery a try. I have read somewhere (can't remember where though, even after a search) that it helped others in a similar situation. The battery is one of few things that stays the same as one gets replacements. It can't hurt to give it a shot.

Good idea. If the next replacement phone reboots, I will insist Verizon replaces my battery and my SD card.

Replacement phone arrived. In the past week, it has only rebooted once. I can accept that as a fluke, if once a week is all that continues to occur.

However, the 3G signal issue that I suspected was triggering the multiple reboots before, now has a new twist to it.

As I am browsing, I occasionally get the "Page Unavailable" message, or the "Connection Failed" message when in GMail. When that happens, I check and notice the 3G signal and icon are gone.

The only way to get 3G back is to manually restart (power off and on) the phone. When it loses 3G and I try and check the phone signal strength (Settings/About Phone/Status), it locks up on the "Status" screen, displaying nothing but a black screen. The only way out is to hit the phone's Home button.

So, not only is the 3G signal gone, but something is affecting the phone's setting readouts.

I am thinking that some phones detect the loss of the 3G signal and reboot and others, like this latest replacement, just lose the signal and have to be manually restarted to regain it.

One other detail. When the other phones were rebooting, the phone would first display the word "Droid", then the "Eye", then a black screen and finally return back to the Homescreen.

BUT, there would be a red circle with a line through it where the 3G icon should be. The only way to gain back the 3G signal would be to power the phone off and on.

So, the loss of the 3G signal is either causing the issues, or WHATEVER is causing the issues is dropping out the 3G AND causing rebooting (or, with this phone, requiring a restart to regain 3G).

I contacted Verizon again and was accused of rooting my phone (I don't). This tech refused to accept that it is the phone(s) and used the easy excuse of apps being the cause. Didn't matter that I explained that Phone #3 was rebooting before apps were installed.

They absolutely refuse to accept that the SD card, or battery, could be the issue. I tend to agree with that too, now.

If the 3G signal issues are tower related, that is understandable, I suppose.

Just curious as to why the 3G signal doesn't return on its own with this phone and whether the other phones rebooted because they detected the 3G signal loss.

This phone is a vast improvement, as it is not rebooting constantly.

Having to manually restart it to regain the 3G signal occasionally is something I suppose I will accept, as I apparently have no choice.
