How far away are you from ending your Verizon contract?  2.2 is not out yet.So you will not get it until it is released. I would imagen with 4G internet would be faster while browsing. You can raed about 4G here-->Wikipedia

I can upgrade now and I figure 4g wont be around in a strong working fashion for about a year so if I go with the droid X will they upgrade the software to the 2.2 version?

2.2 will be pushed to your phone when it becomes available.  the X will not be compatible with LTE (4G) technology.

I have heard rumor that the radio chip in the Droid X is the same as the HTC Evo.  If this is indeed the case, the Droid X may become LTE/4G compatible with a firmware update later on.

As for Android 2.2, VZW and Moto have stated it will be an update available for download and install on these phones.

Maybe the 3G radio in the Droid X is the same as the 3G radio in the EVO, but not the 4G radio in the EVO.  The EVO has 2 radios.

Patiently/Impatiently waiting for the release of the Droid X!

Yep, you are correct.  I did a little more digging and found that the Evo has a WiMax 4G capable radio.  However the 4G is simply a marketing tool as it hasn't been fully rolled out.  Also in the areas that it has been rolled out it has been proven to only be slightly faster than the 3G, and not as fast a T-mobile's 3g+ service.

dont know about other areas, but my mom has never had problems making a phone call, even though she doesnt make many calls. the 5mbps is in nw houston where my brothers evo hits 2.5 mbps all day. tmobile doesnt require $10 a month for their speeds. i can make fun of my dads service since he has att, but with verizons .8mbps i cant say anything about tmobiles 5mbps or sprints 2.5mbps.

The 3G speeds on GSM networks like AT&T and Tmobile are usually a good bit faster than the EVDO Rev-A on their CDMA counterparts(Sprint and Verizon).  Believe Rev-A theoretically tops out at 3.4Mbps but you usually won't see but 1-1.5 in good service areas.  I believe the real world wimax speeds are 3-4Mbps in wimax areas while Tmobile and AT&T are getting upwards of 5 and planning to roll out 7.2 and 21Mbps speeds on supported devices.

I have just recently made the switch back to Verizon, dragging feet, from being with T-Mobile for 6 years. Love their customer service, love their plans, love supporting the "underdog" however, I get no, absolutely no, service in my house. I had a BlackBerry 9700 and would have to be connected to my wi-fi in order to get a signal. Unfortunate really, because most places had great coverage and yes, speedy 3G. I would like to see them team up with Sprint and provide more coverage, they'd be unbeatable.
