Droid X Wi-Fi Issues

What is Verizon's official statement about the serious issues with Droid X wifi? Are certain phones defective, all phones defective, or is it a software issue?

I can't keep a connection on Wifi. I've tried some of the workarounds online, but nothing works consistently.

I love the phone, but this is a dealbreaker. Do I need to exchange the phone, or is a fix coming? If so, when?

Not all phones are defective. My X has no problem with WiFi at home.... I cannot connect at work because our WiFi at work is a closed system and personal computing products are not allowed on the network, wired or wireless.

I have 2 routers

1 - Dlink DIR-628 running 802.11n only - 2.4Ghz spectrum

2 - Linksys WRT54GC running mixed mode b/g

Both routers have WPA2 Personal AES encryption enabled. I also run a MAC filter on both to only allow the listed MAC address's. I was unable to connect to either router until I remembered to put in the MAC address into each router. After I did that, I have not had any issues with connecting or staying connected.

I am getting 65 Mbps on the Dlink and 54Mbps on the Linksys.

Did you check the Dlink website to make sure that you have the latest firmware on your router?

I have a Linksys N Ultra Plus, WRT 160N. I have had no trouble connecting to my home network. My phone shows up in the Linksys Advosor as just another device. I haven't tried Wi-Fi in hotels or coffee shops yet, so I cannot attest to how well it works in that environment.

I love my Droid. Like anything else, there will be detractors and some people will get a lemon. However, I think most people will be happy with their Droid X.

wifi works intermittently. haven't tried downgrading to g. using apple airport extreme. no issues with any other device. same problem in the office with d-link n router. Verizon, MOTO, you guys need to fix this

I'm using an Airport Extreme at home and my Droid X is unusably slow over wifi. I don't feel that I should be forced to reconfigure the router from any of the entirely standard settings I'm using in order to make the Droid work with it, so I haven't tried turning off WPA or setting it to 802.11g or something. So I've just turned off wifi; that's why I have an unlimited data plan, right?

I haven't tried it with any other wifi networks, yet.

I'm also definitely frustrated with the Wi-Fi instability. I had the Droid Incredible, which pretty much worked flawlessly, and swapped it for the X. When the wifi connects, it's INCREDIBLY fast, but it doesn't consistently work. According to the settings, it's connected to the router @ 54 mpbs with good signal strength, has a stable IP, but when I try to load something on the browser or GMail nothing happens. I've even tried many of the suggestions from the different forums like changing the sleep setting to Never and enabling Auto IP and everytime I change a setting, it will work great...but then just stop. My question is whether or not this is a radio issue or driver issue. If it's a software then I can wait and hopefully get an update...but if it's a hardware issue then I'm incredibly annoyed (pun-intended).

Update... I was running firmware 1.32. I updated to the latest firmware for DIR-655, 1.34NA.

At least for now, it's working.

I'm running g & n mixed mode, WPA2 & AES security. TKIP also works.

My internet searches found the problem may be isolated to new D-Link N routers.

My wife and I both got the Droid X on the 15th and it would not hold a stable connection to our D-Link DIR-825 wireless N router. I had to change both the G & N bands to TKIP in order for WiFi to work on the X. When using an AES cipher, the X would connect briefly and then immediately disconnect in an endless cycle. The router is using the latest firmware from D-Link. I suppose using TKIP is a reasonable work-around, but our laptop, 3 of our friend's iPhones, and a friend's Blackberry Storm 2 all had no issues connecting to our WiFi when it was using AES. Only the Droid X had issues. Hmmm.

Interestingly enough, our Droid X's both had that contact synch problem when the Verizon rep transferred the contacts from our old flip phones to the Droid X. Contacts would only appear in the contact search area. This was fixed by running the preinstalled VZ Backup Assistant app. We also have unsatisfactory battery life. With all the default apps and settings loaded, both of our Droid X phones will lose up to 30% of our battery life just from sleeping from 12:00am to 7:00am. Is that normal?? To compare competing phones, my friend's iPhone 4 lost only 3% battery power while asleep for 7 hours. Regardless, I still love the Droid X, but could my wife and I have defective phones? With so many minor issues---- do I wait for possible software updates or return the phones for new ones?

I am another who is having issues with my wifi connections.....

i'm using a ATTuverse router.....my droid x shows connected with 4 bars.....yet i cannot get a connection at all.....

i cannot connect to any hotspots either....

i have been to every forum......tried everything.........Faulty phone?

If Verizon is gonna cut the unlimited Data, they'd better get these issues resolved.

Out of curiousity, how many are you running their router strickly in Wireless N mode, I had issues holding a connection as long as I was running in B,G and N compatible mode but after I changed it to strickly N since everything I have has a N wifi bandwith card (Including My Droid X) and I havent had any issue since.. Other than a slow initial connection that I think is a phone firmware issue and hoping for a fix from Moto.

I just received my Droid X today and it seems unable to connect to my Linksys WRT54G2 V1.

I too am having problems staying connected to any router. I have tried a Meraki, Dlink, Netgear, and Cisco. I have tried G only with WPA2 AES on the ones that have that option and still have the problem. With all of them the phone will connect and work for a little while and then just stop passing data. If I toggle the wifi off and then on again it will work for a little while and then stop again. None of the other devices using the routers exhibit the same problem.

I have been having Wifi problems and so far I have found a temporary fix. I am running a SonicWALL TZ100 Wireless N, I have it setup with a WPA2-PSK for my main SSID, and no key (open) on my guest SSID. (I am able to run more the one SSID's, and I setup a guest for testing purposes). Both SSID's are running in n/g/b mode and not the full n-only mode. My Droid X will connect without any problem on either SSID with full strength, however It would lose connection on and off constantly after a few minutes. Even when the connection was excellent however, I have only been able to get very little or no data transfer of any kind, browsing etc. After testing several things over the past week to get it to work, I noticed irregular data transfer, performance issues, and high ping times on my wireless laptops connected to the network. However, I found this would only occur when the Droid X was connected to the network. I then decided to try changing the wireless mode from n/g/b, to g/b only. Once I made this change, The Droid X instantly was able to browse and transfer data on Wifi, and it would not drop connection. Now I changed back to n/g/b, and I lost all ability to transfer data while the device still says "connected". After several tests, it seems to be working good in g/b mode.

Disappointed that the device would not operate properly in n mode, I called Verizon who immediately deferred me to Motorola. After quite sometime on the phone with them they agreed there was a problem, they want to research it more and work to resolve the issue I guess with an update. They took my phone number and email for additional correspondence to resolve the issue and asked if I knew anyone else with the problem to call them to document the issue.

Oh, and just to mention before the Droid X none of my laptops, XBOX 360, Wii, and printer have had any issues running in wireless N mode on mhy network. Hope this helps.

It's a real bummer that using 3g is faster than WiFi more often than not. I've used WPA2(TKIP and AES), WEP, and currently an unsecured network and it's all the same =(

Regardless, phone is awesome.

I am having similar issues with WIFI. I am running an open G network and the phone will connect when the network is initially set up under system settings and does not normally drop out unless it is out of range or WIFI is turned off.

Once WIFI is turned off or carrier is lost, It will not automatically reconnect unless I go back into the system panel and drill down to the screen that displays currently configured networks. I then immediately obtains an IP address and reconnects.

.I am running an application called WIFI Analyzer and I have noticed that it will reconnect if this application is opened.

This would seem to indicate that the phone is not doing any background WIFI activity monitering and as such will not reconnect until something actually triggers it by specifically requiring WIFI.

Before I found this forum I went to the Verizon store because anytime I connect WiFi, (Open, Wep, doesn't matter) I can't go to any websites. And as soon as I turn off WiFi I can surf fine.

I told the people at the store about it and of corse they all looked surprised I was having issues.

Then the lady asked me this: "If you have unlimited 3G, why would you use WiFI? Most people only use WiFI on airplanes where they have to turn 3G off."

Soon after they handed me a sticky note with the 800 number for Droid X tech support.

Thought I would share that funny coment. :smileysurprised:

I have a LinkSys at home and it connects flawlessly. I had to set up the WiFi because my 3G is so inconsistent. I went with Verizon because I feared T-Mobile's 3G coverage but I'm very disappointed.

Anyhow, I had to connect to get my email. Now, either with the WiFi or with 3G, I can't search on Google or Yahoo! I had to download the Bing app from the Android Store to be able to do web searches.

Now, Google is hung up loading - both on WiFi and 3G. That's why I suspect all this is a software problem. It's sad to pay over $100/month for service and I have to use a free iPod Touch at home to do the work my phone should.

If the net still drags, I'm returning the phone and staying with T-Mobile.

I've had my Droid X since launch and have had nothing BUT wi-fi issues.

I'm tech savvy and even with this phone next to the router it still drops and falls off completely. So annoying.

I sure hope it's software and not hardware, cause that's pretty annoying.

Makes me wonder if you're trying to be a mobile hotspot if you'll be constantly dropping people lol.

There are 83 pages on this topic in the Motorola forums. All solutions have to do with adjusting the settings on your home router. Fine, but that doesn't solve the problem when trying to connect with other wifi networks. I can connect to the one at my company headquarters, but not at all of my buildings. I can't connect to many public wifi networks. This isn't a router issue, it's either a phone, android or Verizon issue. Whoever is responsible needs to fix it. The Droid X is a great phone in many respects, but wifi is critical to most of us. It's especially critical to Verizon if it's bandwith is being hogged by people who can't use wifi on their phones.

Same issues. I connect successfully once but after a few minutes it freezes up. When I try and toggle it off I get nothing. I have to do a battery pull to get it working again. After about 3 battery pulls you are at supreme irritation. My Droid Eris connected effortlessly......why problems with the more powerful device?

Please fix!!!! Hope 2.2 solves this.

Same problems, and I'm using a high end $1000.00 Firewall/WiFi Router called Watchguard Firebox. I'm an IT expert so i'm sure it's not somtihng im doing wrong. WiFi works flawless with my iPhone, and I will be going back to it soon if this problem is not addressed.

Just got my Droid X and have the same wifi issues as everyone else here is having. I have a Linksys and it has run perfectly for in a mixed environment. My Droid ERIS and wife's phone have had no problems with wifi. The DroidX is nice but wifi is a must and if it is not fixed very soon this will be a contact breaker and iPhone 4 here I come. It's a shame because I've been with VzW for years.

i have been having the same issues with my droid x. i have searched many forums and i found a fix for the slow wifi and constant disconnecting issues. i am currently running a wireless n netgear router. the only fix right now it to change the router configurations to tkip however this makes signal strength become lower. and now i have had to change it back as i do not want a password on my wi fi network and when the droid x would connect to the wpa tkip setup at first after a day it wouldn't even connect!! overall unhappy as i enjoy using my wifi. i should not have to make adjustments to my network to accommodate the phone the I paid for. if this problem is not fixed soon the DROID X IS GOING BACK TO THE STORE. verizon needs to acknowledge this problem and fix it immediately.

I'm having these issues as well. I can connect to the wireless but when I try to browse it just spins. I will try to switch the encryption to TKIP but that is only a band-aid, not a real fix. This is a real issue that needs to be addressed.

I ran into the same issues using a linksys WRT54G router set Mixed with WPA - AES. When I first enabled WiFi, I was able to connect and reconnect fine. But I was experiencing sit & spin when attempting to browse. I switched my router settings to G-only and WPA-TKIP and that seems to have resolved the issue for now. Need a fix for this issues as I'm planning to upgrade to 802.11n. Long time loyal VzW customer. Please don't make me swap Droid x for iPhone 4 on ATT.

I have an ancient D Link DI-614+ 802.11b only router and was having the same kind of problem as some of you -- my Droid X would connect and receive an IP address, but could not connect outbound to the Internet with any application. I noticed in the Wi-Fi Settings that I was connected at 22 Mbps, and remembered that my router requires a proprietary PC card to double the normal 11 Mbps speed to 22. I disabled 22 Mbps transmission in the router's admin settings, rebooted the router, turned off and turned on wireless in the Droid X, and now I'm working fine at 11 Mbps. I hope that might help somebody. Best of luck to all and I'm looking forward to Froyo.

That has to be the dumbest thing I have ever heard coming from a VZ employee.

Any way,

I can't hold a cell signal and have wi-fi on at the same time, maybe it is some conflict with some people's cell antenna like it is with mine. Just an idea, I am sort of grasping at straws there :smileyindifferent:

My D-Link DIR-615 will NOT maintain a secure (WPA-TKIP) wireless connection with Droid X using either "g" or "n". I happen to also own a Netgear WGT624v3 and it WILL maintain a secure (WPA-TKIP) wireless connection with Droid X using "g".

Base upon the above postings, it appears to be a "D-Link" issue!!!

I had wifi issues as well. I found a workaround though. It ended up being a security thing. I had originally had my wireless security set to WPA2 and neither of my 2 Droid X's could connect. I changed the wireless security to WEP and they connect like a charm now.

Dlink 655, no security, mixed b/g/n, no wish setup

About as simple as you can get - it connects, works for a while, then disconnects. I've watched the logs on my router and the wireless connection suddenly disappears. My old DI 624 router seemed to work just fine - wonder if it's something related to the N network/connection? My router shows it's connecting via the N config. No other networks are showing on my phone. This is obviously an issue, and probably not the router's fault as there are too many other routers with similar issues.

Hi, All,

I'm also having WiFi problems on my X. I've had it for a week and I like it in pretty much every other way... but this is a *hassle*!

I have a NetGear RangeMax WPN 824 v3 (it's a pre-N router with some custom extensions, although I disable them). It's worked beautifully with my laptops and my TiVo, but I've been unable to use it from the X with any kind of security enabled.

These are the symptoms:

1. Turn on WiFi.

2. Phone quickly connects (and brings up the DLNA and MediaShare crap - how do I turn that off??).

3. I can see that phone gets an IP address (DHCP succeeds) via my router's log and the X's WiFi info.

4. Data never flows. The connection will eventually drop (a minute or so).

I can turn off WiFi and turn it back on... with exactly the same results. Using a "WiFi fixer" app, I can see the fixer constantly try to reconnect. Every time it succeeds in connecting to the router and obtaning an IP lease... but I never have any data transfer.

I've tried changing channels. Originally I was on 6, then "auto," then 1, then 2. No luck with any. No change in behavior.

I normally use WEP (TiVo series 2 only supported WEP), so I switched to WPA+TKIP (*not* AES). Still no luck. Same behavior.

The only way I've gotten it to work is by disabling all security. Then the phone would connect just fine, and worked pretty durn quickly. I WANT THAT ALL THE TIME!!

Looking at the phone's dmesg log, there are some weird error messages from the wifi driver that I don't understand.

Ack! At first I thought it was a NetGear problem because I'd read that a few people switched away from the WPN824 and the X started working... but I see in this thread that actually people with WPN824s say it works *better*!

Dang! What's going on? Do I have to pray towards Mecca to get this to work, or what? Why is this so hard? And how could Moto have released a phone with so many *obvious* connection issues? Sheesh!

The hard reset should resolve this problem for you. The only thing you will lose is your applications since your contacts are automatically backed up. The steps for performing the reset are listed below:

Performing a factory reset via settings

The most convenient way to do a factory reset is via the phone settings.

Press HOME

> MENU,

then tap Settings.

Scroll down the screen,

and then tap Privacy

> Factory data reset.

On the Factory data reset screen,

tap Reset phone,

and then tap Erase everything.

No, doing a hard reset does *NOT* fix the issue.

I've done this, and the issue is still there.

To me, this sounds like telling someone who runs Windows to reboot their computer if they have any problem-- it's a blind stab in the dark guess that might work sometimes, but most likely just indicates the person who said it has no idea what the problem is.

It's getting really frustrating that this issue has been around for almost 2 months now, since the phone was launched July 15, (the day I got mine), and no one has come up with a fix yet. I hate to think that I signed a new 2 year contract and will have to live with this issue for another 22 months because it's not being addressed officially, other than "do a hard reset".

That's a very good suggestion. I was having WiFi connect and drop off issues, then I saw on another forum how to go into the Advanced settings. I didn't even know there were Advanced settings. Here's how:

From the home screen: Menu button, Settings, Wireless & Networks, Wi-Fi Settings, then press the menu button and select Advanced, then touch Wi-Fi Sleep Policy. That will pop up three choices:

When screen turns off

Never when plugged in

Never

It must be defaulted to "when screen turns off," because that's how mine was set and I never even knew those settings were there. I changed it to "Never" and it seems to work much better. My wireless router now shows that it connects and stays connected.

I have been having the same issue (wifi and 3g symbols showing up at the same time). I switched airplane mode on to turn off the 3g radio and restarted my wifi and now the wifi is rock solid. Seems the wifi and 3g were stepping on each other when both were active. Seems like a bug in the Moto software.

I've had the same WIFI problem as discribed here from the day I got the X. My D-Link 615 wireless router works fine for my laptop but the Droid X won't work here at home OR OTHER PLACES! I was referred to Motorola 2 level tech support and they couldn't figure it out. I just got done with them, after 45 minutes on the phone I finally asked for a supervisor who said that they were not aware of ANY wifi problems!!! Need less to say I explained that their were tons of blogs about the problem.

I got it to work by reading one of the posts here about a conflict with 3G. I turned on the airplane mode and wala -- it works perfectly. What a pain, first I was told that Froyo would solve the problem which it didn't. Although I was thrilled that the Motorola Car Kit (HF850) that worked perfectly with my previous 4 Verizon/Motorola phones started working again when I got the update.

What we got here is failure to communicate. With the 'smartphones' we now have a three ring circus; Verizon sells the phone and provides the network, Motorola makes the phone and does advanced tech support, but Google makes the software. Therefore Google, the people steering the ship are completely disconnected from end user feedback for simple problem fixes and geniune needs. IE Every phone I've had beeps or lets me know that I missed a call or text etc. Now we've gone backwards and they have taken this simple feature away.

I thought the issue was resolved, but it's not. Nothing has changed since I've been updated to Android 2.2 on the phone either.

Wi-Fi issues... maybe some of you forgot you're running battery power saver app that turns off Wi-Fi when not in use.

At long last, Droid X recent update last week (build version 2.3.340, still android 2.2) fixed wifi problem for me. It's been almost a week, it can reliably connect to my Airport Extreme/Time capsule, never broke off once.

Is it possible you're using a battery power saving app, that's shutting off WIFI... another possibility the some app power saving app might not be functioning properly and shutting off WIFI/3G even while it's in use.

Why WIFI instead of 3G... if you move out of your coverage area... unlimit 3G doesn't exclude roaming charges... yet.

Wonder what you trying to do? to be connected to a wifi, or use is as wifi hotspot source? Note that you can not turn on your droid x wifi hotspot and connect it to another wifi source at the same time.

If it is just issue connecting to another wifi router, update your droid x to latest firmware so see whether it fixes your problem. The last firmware (340) worked for me.

And of source, you may also need to verify that your router is working well. Trying to connect to your router with different handsets. If it is only your droid X experiencing problem, then it is issue with your droid x, otherwise, could be your router.

It's got to be a software issue. If I turn on airplane mode, and then turn on WiFi, WiFi works great and I can surf the 'net. But as soon as I turn off airplane mode, 3G takes over. The WiFi is still connected, but all packets go through the 3G connection.
