Droid X ad-hoc wifi connection

I have the Droid X with the .340 update and I am able to connect to wireless access points though I am having trouble getting a working connection via ad-hoc mode to my pc.

I have tried configuring a static ip/gateway address for the phone although the Droid X still tries to get an address from the network.

The SSID matches the setup on the computer and encryption is disabled for now.

I disabled the PC firewall for testing though still could not connect.

I am using wireless-G mode.

I think it is likely I have to configure the PC wireless network to match the phone though I am not sure what those settings should be.

Any suggestions?

We do not support static IP. The settings cannot mock your phone because it is a dynamic IP, which always changes, on every session, so the settings would never match.

Hello,

Please follow these steps to connect to your home wi-fi network.

Turn Wi-Fi on or off

Find it: Press and hold Power/Lock > Wi-Fi

Note: To extend battery life, turn off Wi-Fi power when

not in use.

Wi-Fi search & connect

To find networks in your range:

1 Press Menu > Settings > Wireless &

networks > Wi-Fi settings.

2 Touch Wi-Fi to turn on and scan. If Wi-Fi is already

on, press Menu > Scan. Your phone lists the

networks it finds within range.

Tip: To see your phone’s MAC address or other

Wi-Fi details, press Menu > Advanced.

3 Touch a network to connect.

4 If necessary, enter Network SSID, Security, and

Wireless password, and touch Connect. When

your phone is connected to the network, the

wireless indicator appears in the status bar.

Tip: When you are in range and Wi-Fi is on, you will

automatically reconnect to available networks you’ve

connected to before.

This works for connecting to a router or hot spot. I am looking to connect with another computer directly via ad-hoc network.

The Android OS does not natively support Ad-Hoc connections as of yet. This may or may not change in future updates.

I was afraid of that being the case. I don't understand why this would be left out intentionally. While traveling I will have to bring a router as well.

You can always google a workaround for it. a simple google search on "droid X Ad-Hoc fix " should get you what you need.

the router gets the input from the modem and i don't follow how taking a router with you will work. i hope you're not planning to just plug the router in and have automatic wireless.

i've used a linksys wrt54g wired/wireless router for years and unless somethings changed, the hardwire's gotta be working before you get wireless.

I found a couple of alternatives to Connectify though I may not be able access the computer itself. The hotspot program may act merely as a conduit.

I am testing out my sync'ing and connectivity with my home network for now and am searching for modifications to Droid X WiFi to enable ad-hoc. I found a thread yesterday and will read up on it.

Regarding the ip settings for the Droid X, there is an option under wireless networks for setting ip, gateway and dns. What are these settings for if the phone ignores it? Can I set the iptables for each network another way?
