No extraordinary additions or apps on phone...

See if this fixes it:
Wiping cache partition- cures many ills and is better to start with this than a (gulp) full Factory Reset.
- Power off
- Power On Holding Home Key
- When Andy with Exlamation Point Shows up Press BOTH Volume keys
- Use Volume Keys to navigate to "wipe cache partition" and tap power button to select
- Wait for it to finish and select reboot system

Thanks for the suggestions Cody21
Its very inconvenient when your device freezes. I'm glad predictive text is turned off that can interfere as well. Please also try "Clear data" under Settings->Applications->Manage applications->Multi-touch keyboard. Motorola has been informed of this and they are working on a permanent fix. As soon as they inform us of the solution we will post it as well.
Thank you

I am experiencing the exact same problem with my Droid X (ie. freezing while using punctuation in text message, then half-screen going black, etc.) and have tried many of the suggestions I've found on this and other Droid forums--with no success. I have not opted for the Factory Reset and I'd rather avoid it, which brings me to my question: How's that solution coming folks?!
Any more ideas?

OK. I had not tried Joel's suggestion. Just did and it's working (text sans freeze upon adding punctuation) ... so far so good. Thanks Joel! Still, Motorola, would like the permanent fix.
