Droid X in constant reboot loop

My daughter's Droid X is caught in a constant reboot loop. THe Droid splash screen comes on then the rotating "red eye" goes for a few seconds. Then repeats this process. It never completes booting to the home screen.

I have tried switching batteries, looking at the contacts (they are all straight and clean) removing the media card.

I looked online for solutions but none seem to address this particular issue. Maybe I was looking in the wrong place.

She has received a replacement device from Verizon yesterday.

We need to get the data off the old phone for a very tragic reason.

Her boyfriend, a US Marine, was texting her wherever he was. He was killed in action in Afghanistan.

We want to be able to get the text messages, photos, etc that he sent off the phone before sending it back to Verizon.

Can someone please provide some easy to follow steps on how to do this?

It is bad enough that he was killed. The malfunctioning phone has now compounded her grief.

Also is there a way she can save, backup text messages to the media card or online?

Thank you so much for your assistance.

Sounds like Hard Reset is needed, this will wipe device and restore device to the same state that you bought the device new..

Android version 2.3 (Gingerbread)

  1. Power the device off.
Note Press and hold the Power button then select Power off.
Note If the device isn't responding to input, remove / replace the battery.
  2. Press and hold the Home key then power the device on.
Note Press the Power button while holding Home.
    Home key
    Power button
  3. From the Android Recovery screen, press Volume Up / Down simultaneously.
    Volume
  4. Select wipe data / factory reset then press the Power button.
    wipe data / factory reset
  5. Select Yes -- delete all user data then press the Power button.
Note Reset process to may take approximately 1 minute.

  6. Ensure reboot system now is selected then press the Power button.

Thank you for the easy to follow instructions.

Upon reading them however I feel this will not be the solution I am looking for.

The entire reason I made this post is that I need to retrieve the text messages and photos that was on the phone. A wipe will return to factory default and wipe out all data. This is not what I need.

Again thank you for your response,

Perhaps another member can help with getting the data from the phone.

This is from another source in reference to texts. The photos should be on the SD card and you can take it from the defective phone and install it in the replacement. Yes, a reset will erase the texts. I'm sure wildman will re-read your post and offer more advice.

You can try the same steps I posted above but in step 4 select Wipe Cache Partition and then reboot device and see if it boots...

Under most cases once you get in a boot loop a reset is the only solution, if you are in a boot loop there really isnt many solution to work around this, now as for photos, they are stored on your SD Card like droidsw pointed out and also you can try the process posted to get messages back....

Also if messages are a important item you may want to invest in a backup app like MyBackup Pro at https://market.android.com/details?id=com.rerware.android.MyBackupPro&feature=search_result or SMS Backup & Restore at https://market.android.com/details?id=com.riteshsahu.SMSBackupRestore&feature=search_result so when something like this happens you can restore them easy.

The only issue with that us that the messages are not stored on the sd card, they are stored in the root directory for security reasons..

to @OP --  have you tried booting into SAFE MODE? or does the spinning red eye continue to reboot?

- Power Off

- Press & Hold the Menu button

- power up, continue to hold menu for about 1-2 mins.

If it comes up, will say SAFE MODE in lower left corner

If it DOES come up in SAFE MODE, it soulnds like you have a 3rd party App casuing the issue.

Its worth a try but I do not think Safe Mode will work because the device has to get by the animation before it even acknowledged the safe mode command..

I really hope you find a solution and are able to retrieve your text msgs.  My husband did a year in Iraq and I honestly don't know what I would have done if he didn't come back and I had lost everything.  By chance does your daughter have Lookout on her X?  If so she might be able to retrieve the text and the photo's from the website, that is if she has it set to back up these items. Again, I hope you find a resolution.

Please accept my thanks for your husband's service. Also thank you for your your sacrifices you have made to support him.

During my Navy career it was the support from home that kept me going.

Sadly the text messages are forever gone. It breaks my heart to see my daughter in such pain, but she is coping and with the love and support of friends and family she will continue to improve.

Thanks to all the community members for your input. For scieszis, I am so sorry to hear of the situation with the device under the unfortunate circumstances. My thanks goes to the gentleman for serving our country and best wishes to the beloved family members and friends. Where you able to access the text messages on the phone? The suggestion about checking the Sd Card is a good option for seeing if the pictures have been saved. As far as the text messages, unless there is a way to get pass the constant reboot loop, getting at the messages off the phone would be very difficult if not at all possible. But in view of the situation and if you like to keep trying to get past the constant reboot loop error, perhaps some good suggestions given by others would allow this problem to be resolved. I checked very deep into this matter for you, if there was a way known, I would have provided it. I hope somehow the phone was able to be accessed for the messages to be recovered.
