Droid X keeps locking up! ARGH!

aussomeaussies

I have had my Droid X since August of last year.  Never have had any problems until yesterday.  Went to start texting someone back and the phone locks up.  Seems worse when I'm trying to the use the keyboard.  What took me seconds before to swype or type something out is now taking me minutes to do.  I even have to go back and delete stuff because it acts like I held down the key for the letter too long and puts a symbol in there instead.

Anyone elses doing this?  I'm ready to smash this thing!  I used the Lookout and the Antivirus thing and nothing has been found, so I have no idea what else it could be.  Phone is totally up to date with operating system and everything.  Please help if you have any ideas.  :smileysad:

Here is suggestion that some may not concider but this is something I have learned works for me...  Install ATK from market and when the device appears to be slowing down or not responding.... Open ATK and close what is running and if the device smooth out then it is a issue with low resources due to apps running in background.

Some feel that a task killer doesnt help but in my opinion and experiance I beleive this can be used without issues...

Is it just Swype giving you trouble?

If so, try going to settings, applications, manage applications, and find Swype. Press "clear data" and "force close". See if it works right when you use it again.

If not, have you installed any new apps lately?

And just to clarify, how many antivirus programs are you running?

(Hope this doesn't post twice, Firefox Mobile is acting foolish)

It's not just swype... it's the whole keyboard. It's also the whole phone.  LOL.  Switching from window to window and when loading apps or closing out of one it locks up.  I uninstalled whatever apps I had recently installed this past week to see if that helped, but no dice so far.  I've had to take out the battery 5 times this weekend to reset the phone.  The only things I am running is the Lookout and the AVG antivirus thing.  The AVG Antivirus thing I just installed today to see if it would catch anything that Lookout missed.   :smileysad:

A few questions: have you installed a new app or updated one recently?  Are you using a task killer?  The Android OS manages it's own memory usage, and is supposed to work better when it's RAM is on the full side (at least that's how I understand it).  Did you root or flash a ROM recently?  There are detailed instructions online that needs to be followed pretty much to the T.  I would also try shutting down the phone, and turning it on again.  The X is like a mini computer, and needs to be restarted occastionally, to clear out or shuffle files.  I know it's not the same system, but my sister's BB was acting the same way.  After I told her to shut down and reboot, the problems went away.

Just a few suggestions. :smileyhappy:

Also, don't be afraid to search the web; you'd be suprised how many people have the same phone problems as you.

Good luck.

Have you tried it today?

Is there any chance that your display screen got wet?

Was anyone else using your phone and could they have exposed it to moisture?

What you describe happens whenever mine gets wet from rain outside, or even high humidity in the bathroom during a shower.

The display/keyboard becomes useless until I dry it off, let it sit a while and then reboot it.

May be reaching, but thought I'd throw it out there.

I don't think that it got wet or got moisture in it... but I have it shut off for now to let it reboot and figure itself out perhaps.  I think if I am still having issues with it tomorrow, then at lunchtime I'll run to Verizon and see what Tech support says.  I can't figure it out... I even deleted apps that have been on there forever that I don't use much anymore, or moved them to the SD card.  This is craziness! LOL  Thank you for the suggestions.  I did the swype thing and then uninstalled all that stuff, so then we will see what happens.

How frequently does the lock up occur? if it's predictable - like all the time - try putting the phone into SAFE MODE and see if you can reproduce it. SAFE MODE will prevent most of the 3rd party Apps from loading giving you yet another way to POSSIBLY rule our the OS.

to get into Safe Mode:

- Power off the phone

- Press and HOLD the MENU button

- Power up the phone, but continue to HOLD the MENU button

The phone will say "SAFE MODE" in the lower left corner.

Test & see if the problem occurs again. If it does NOT, there's a good chance it's an APP you installed... Time to either uninstall your APPS, or even a full RESET. (If you do a RESET, make sure your APPS are set to not automatically reinstall. Otherwise the issue could come back.)

Good luck.
