Droid X keeps restarting every 5 seconds. Only loads home screen then restarts

Has anyone else had this problem? My phone died last night and I charged it this morning. After it was charged I turned it on and that's when the restarting began. Took it to Verizon and they told me I would have to replacement through insurance. Not cool so before I spend the money through insurance I wanted to check here first. Thanks

Thanks everyone for your help today. I ended up chatting with a motorola tech and he told me how to do the reset with the yellow triangle. i will list his instructions below in case this is ever needed for someone else.

Turn off phone
Press and hold Power key + Home hard key to power on the phone and bring up a triangle with an exclamation point inside next to a green Android graphic.
Press Search hard key to show the Android recovery menu.
Tap to select "wipe data/factory reset" (you can also use Volume buttons to scroll up or down in this menu)
Press Menu hard key under "Ok" screen prompt (camera button can also be used to confirm selection)
Handset will ask you to "Confirm wipe of all user data"
Select "Yes -- delete all user data"
Press Menu hard key under "Ok" screen prompt to start wipeout of phone, handset will begin to format handset showing progress with multiple lines of ellipses (....) (camera button can also be used to confirm selection)
Handset may take from 5-20 minutes to format.
When format is complete, press Menu hard key under "Ok" screen (or use the camera button) when prompted to reboot (Reboot system now will be highlighted)
You will see either an open box and the green android graphic when handset is rebooting (or the red DROID eye graphic).
Handset will be cleared of previous personal data, and you will need to start over with initial set-up process.

Hmmm, something doesn't sound right. Was there damage to the phone? Water? Dropped and broke something? I was under the impression the manufacturer's warrenty covered the phone for defects for 1 year and insurance was for things that you may have done to break the phone.

Anyhow, take out the battery, replace it and charge for a good 8 hours. See if that helps. Otherwise try a factory reset, but you will lose data on the phone (SD card will not be effected and will keep all data).

no damage what so ever to it. My two year contract was up for my blackberry and I renewed my contract through verizon but purchased the phone through walmart.com. I just purchased the phone in Jan. but when I looked up info from walmart's website and they say repairs after 30 days will go through a one year manufactors warranty but verizon told me they show no warranty. I will try your suggestion about charging it eight hours with the power off. Can I swipe it if the phone only loads the homescreen for 3-5 seconds?

It only takes 2-3 hours to fully charge a dead phone.

Keep it pluggged in while trying to diagnose the problem.

You said while you were downloading apps and configuring, I'm wondering if there is an app conflict.

Had you installed anything new just before the problem started?

Just for fun, try booting your phone into SAFE MODE and see if it settles down or continues to have the same problem.

- Power off phone

- Press and HOLD the Menu button

- Continue holding the MENU button & power up the phone - but keep holding the MENU button.

It should eventually come up saying "SAFE MODE" in the lower left corner.

If it does come up, see if it will run in that mode for some duration that is longer than your reboot experience. If it DOES remain up, there is a good likelihood that an APP is causing your reboots. I would start uninstalling APPS or just do the RESET procedure and start over.

PS - to get out of SAFE MODE, just power off and back on as usual.

With all due respect, there isn't any mention of damage to the phone and only the impression that Verizon doesn't honor warranties on phones purchased through 3rd parties. Please clarify.

Glad you got it resolved but I thought I would point you to my post that breaks down all the reset procedures for future reference if this may happen again for you.. This cover any method that would be needed to resolve a device by hard reset, booting or not.. Some find it helpful....
