Droid X

Need your help desperately  and am quite embarrassed regarding my stupidity and ignorance .

Last night I noticed that the App. for Fox News works kind of really slow.  I decided to change the DX from 3G to Wi- Fi  since I had read and also heard that WI Fi is a lot faster than 3G.  Bad idea, I know this now.  The Droid emblem came on, and for a few seconds I could not wake it up.  After pressing the Home button, finally it came back on again, but it looked a little different.  Had 7 Home screens again (instead of only 3); several  Apps were missing which includes My BackUp Pro.  Could not find any of my missing Apps in the Apps tray (swiped my fingers).  Most interesting of all, I now have in the lower left hand corner a notice stating "Safe Mode".   I have no idea what this means, and how to correct this.

Still love my phone very much and I am fascinated by it.   Did it give me an accidental unwanted Factory Reset or something similar not quite as harsh?

Thank you in advance for all your help.

Sounds like your device crashed for some reason and rebooted in safe mode (Sometimes some software has issues and this is what happens), just hold power button and shut device down and wait a second and power back up.

Also I would also check with the developer information on market and make sure the Fox News app is 2.2.1 tested and compatible.

UPDATE: I just checked Market and there is a few post of FC and running slow so this may be a bug with app.

How do I get rid of the message "Safe Mode"?  Also, what can I do about my missing Apps?  Do I have to download them again?  I will definitely not be using Fox News in the future. There must be some good News Apps.

Thanks for your help.

I have tried that app numerous times, it has never been what I would call "stable".

Instead, I use the browser and go to www.foxnews.mobi.

(foxnews haters, don't even start. This is not the
place.)

You should see the apps once the phone is not in safe mode, I think...?

I wish I had thought of this, I'm minutes away from a show starting...

The news and weather app that comes on the phone is pretty good.

gail2, Safe Mode is a troubleshooting tool which disables 3rd party apps.

You will see your apps return when you power the phone back up and out of Safe Mode.

Sounds like you are using a launcher. It too, should return, or be accessible, again.

As for the FoxNews app, I've never had an issue with it. But, any app at any time has the potential to lock up, or require a force close.

If you ever need to force close an app, go to Menu/Settings/Applications/(Choose app)/Force Close.

The whole problem is the app seem to cause a FC extreme enough to boot you into safe mode while attempting to use it, as reported just power the device off and then power backup should boot you back into normal mode and at this point I suggest you uninstall the app because it appears some has good luck and some hasnt, sounds like you are one of the bad luck users....Power off and backon and removethe app and you should be ok.

Wildman, I did as you said.  Power off, Power on and uninstalled Foxnewx.  Guess what, my phone still states "Safe Mode".

I also uninstalled Lookout.  Both of them were missing anyhow along with others still.

It is now approx. 24 houjrs that my phone is in "Safe Mode".

I hope that I do not need to do a factory reset.

Thanks for all your help.

That is strange, by chance did you try disabling the wifi amd see what happens since this is what started your issue in the first place.  Also it is wise to try the battery pull ideal, that does work sometime.

One more thing to try:

Power Device Off First.....

1. Hold Home Button and press power

2. Screen will show a Android with a triangle with astrick

3. Let Go of Home Button and Power

4. Press Search Button (Far Left Button)

5. A blue menu will show at top of page, scroll to Wipe Cache Partition

6. Select OK

7. Once complete select Reboot

Note: Use volume up and down to select options and use camera button as Enter,,,

Thanks to all of you, it worked.  I pulled the battery (first time), and the phone is again in normal mode.

My missing Apps. came back including the most needed one "My BackUP Pro".

Will use Geri's advice and use the App. that came with the phone for weather and news until I hear that the FoxNews App.  is stable..

Droidsw would you reinstall "Look Out"?. Are you still using it?

Thanks again for everything.

Another thing that does'nt hurt to do is.  if your on the Web quite a bit or even an occasional web user. Clear your Data History an Your Cookies. Go into your settings. an this is how to get there. go to the Web then hit the settings Button left of home Button click it. It'll bring up six boxes click on the more Box !!!!

then scroll down to Settings click on that > then scroll down to Privacy Settings there you can clear ur Cache>Clear History>Clear Cookie Data> Clear Form Data> Clear Location Access>and then clear your Passwords if U want to as well. you can also Reset to Default an it'll go back to as when you just got the device  . I usually Do this every other Day on My Droids it just keeps the junk from pilling up there . Give it a try an see if it helps :smileyvery-happy:      DincX110

Funny, I have the same issues with the Facebook app, although it has never FCed. But like Droidsw and the foxnews app, I know people that use it with no problems.

I wish I had time to play with it, do a restore, and try apps like those to see how they act on a fresh restore.

Another thing I wonder about those apps is that they are constantly updating and connecting to data, as opposed to just using the browser and I can control what the sites do and when.

Or is that a non-issue in the grand scheme of things?

More than once, I have tapped the search window on the Google homepage to bring up the keyboard to Swype a search term.

Under the search window is the list of my previous search terms (words/phrases). More
than once, the search terms were NOT mine.

One time was during the holidays and the searches were for shopping, stores, etc.

No one had access to my phone and I had not searched for anything even close to that.

The second time was on MLK Day. The unrecognizable search terms were all about MLK.

I use Lookout. I don't think it's malware, but it makes me wonder if an app can and did somehow do this.

Makes one wonder, what if whatever is doing this searches for something illegal?

Bizarre and a little unnerving, but something to be overly concerned about? I don't know.

By chance do you have any of those items bookmarked because when you start typing google search kicks in and search all your search areas also when you first open google voice it ask do you want to search google online, If you said yes it will check the web when you start typing. What you disturbed sounds like it is working as designed. if you want to restrict it just go into google search abd select what you want to be searched.

Wildman,  the first time, the searches were for "Saks 5th Avenue", "Christmas Bargain Hunting", etc. I had not been "shopping" , or doing any searches, typed or voice, for anything like that. I have a couple of Store apps, Best Buy, Target, but no bookmarks.

The second time, the searches were "Where was MLK born", "MLK speeches", etc. I had not even used Google that day.

And, being the second time these unknown searches appeared, it really got my attention. I constantly check each time I open the browser (to the Google homepage), wondering what will be in the list of previous searches.

I can rule out bookmarks.

These were also individual searches. I'm not sure how long the list will propagate, but I would guess at least ten different searches, each time.

I understand but this is how Android is designed, as soon as you start typing it willstart retrieving resolts from off line, Google has been configured like this for day one.  it will show results you never searched befor because it will look for the index to what you type online just like the desktop browsers, if you type "Angry Mo" you will see angry monkey that I am sure you never searched for...  At least I hope not..:smileyvery-happy:

Take my word that this is normal and nothing shady is going on because this is how the OS is designed, you can try another browser that wont check the web for results but I think the all do this not as a standard feature.

I had the same problem about a month ago, it wind up being an app that was doing this.  I can't recall the name of the app, but I remember I deleted the most recent app and that weird stuff stopped.

:smileysurprised: Now you got me wondering because my phone has done this from day one that I can remember and I am wondering what if this is a installed app doing this?  I may have to reset to see what happens with a clean install bacause all this time I thought this was a stock feature..

UPDATE:  OK unless my phone id special, I just hard reset and cleared all data back to stock and my phone still shows search results from the web just like I thought... I did not install any apps at all and feature is still the same, I really do believe this is a stock feature for browser..

Here is a article that seems to verify this has been a feature at least since Sept of 2010, check it out at http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/1732700/google-instant-causes-autocomplete-havoc
