Droid X2 microphone problems?

I've had my Droid X2 for about 1.5 months now. Initially I loved it. Recently though I've been having problems with people not being able to hear me when I call them. The problem is intermittent, but becoming more frequent. A typical scenario is I'll make a call, the person can't hear me so they hang up. I'll call back, they can't hear me, but if I switch to speakerphone, then they can hear me. When it first started, I tried a soft reset (turned off and removed battery). It seemed to fix it. Then the problem started again. 3 days ago I did a full factory reset, and 2 days ago it started doing it again. Just yesterday I updated to 2.3, and all was good, but tested the phone this morning, and it's doing it again.
Is this most likley a hardware issue? Why does speakerphone work fine, but regular talking does not? Also, I am sure I am not hitting the mute button. Most of the time people can't hear me at all, but sometimes they can barely hear and say it sounds like I'm in a tunnel or there's a big echo.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as my wife is started to regret her decision to let me get a smartphone, especially since I can't use it as a phone (although she's now hooked on Angry Birds). Thanks in advance.
Eric

I need to ask the obligatory question about the possibility of an app that could be causing a conflict. Its been known to happen. And don't you or anyone blow a fuse just because I asked. It's just part of the troubleshooting routine, nothing less and nothing more.
Check that out. If not, it may be time for a warranty exchange.
Good luck,

Geri, thanks for the response. No problem asking the questions. I understand the need to troubleshoot. Sadly, I took that into consideration which is why I did a full factory reset. Since then, all I've done is update the My Verizon app, and added angry birds, dropbox, and facebook. Previously I had another media player, couple of weather apps, netflix, and so on.
I tried to start the phone in safe mode also (according to the online directions) but it won't boot into safe mode (I thought that might also rule out any apps). I think it might be a hardware problem, and I've seen some things where people had problems with the original Droid and this.
If it is hardware, how long does it normally take to replace (I don't have the insurance)? I'm headed on vacation next week and will probably wait until after that to replace.

I'm not familiar with the DX2 (have the DX) ... but for ME to get into Safe Mode, I do this:
- Power Off
- Press & HOLD (forever) the MENU button
- Press Power up - continue to hold MENU
Comes up saying SAFE MODE in lower left ..
Are you saying yours won't do this? hmm.

Cody, thanks. I tried safe mode again, and it finally went in. In safe mode I made a call, and could not be heard. I had them call me back, they still couldn't hear me, but on speakerphone they said I sounded loud and clear. So, I have a feeling this phone will be going back for a replacement.
Again, does anyone know the turnaround time on replacments, and also, do they fix this one, give me a new one, or send me a refurbished?
Just seems lousy that someone spends a lot of money on equipment that doesn't work longer than a couple of months.

I'd take it into a Verizon store and SHOW them the issue. I don't recall you saying whether you did the Factory reset (sorry). But if you have NOT, I'm fairly certain that Verizon will insist that be done first - either in store or over the phone with Tech Support. So you may wish to try that first on your own.
Anyway, if it is less than 14 days old, you SHOULD get a brand new replacement. After 14 days & within 1 year, they give you a Refurb (CPO). If you deal with them on the phone and they FEDEX you a replacement, can take 2 days or so.
Good luck.

Lookout works fine ... Maybe you had a differnet app issue, but Lookout has been on mine since Sept. 2010 and hasn't caused any issues at all for me (and others).
to the @OP : did you take the phone to Verizon? any update as to what happened?

I know this is an old thread, but for anyone who finds it via a Google search: I had the same problem with my droid X, people couldn't hear me unless I put on speaker phone. Uninstalling Lookout solved the problem. Lookout, btw, requires an extra step to uninstall, you must first go into settings -> security -> "select device administrators" and then deselect Lookout. You can then uninstall it like any other app.
