Just found the Droid on Amazon for $50:

Will Verizon price match?

There are a couple of other sites making the same offer. Dell has it for $49.99 as well.

I saw this on Amazon. No, Verizon won't match prices.
I know if you get a Droid at Wal-Mart, for instance (which was $100 last week), you have to take it there first if you have problems. So I'm not sure how Amazon works.
I think I'd feel better paying the $200 to know I can go right to the Verizon store if I have a problem, KWIM?

That was my thought... Verizon's a physical store that I can take my Droid to if there's a problem. My husband and I each want one, and they're having that lovely BOGO sale. We're just splitting hairs at this point, but it never hurts to ask!
Thanks,
Jen

This might be a good deal if you want to add a phone to your household, but that's about it. Note in parenthesis where it says 'with a new service plan'. When I bought my Eris, I made the mistake of taking advantage of a similar offer on Amazon. Within a couple of hours of ordering it, I received an email giving me my new phone number and stating that my new phone had been activated. Before I even recieved it!
When I called verizon to request that my number be transferred to the new phone, I found out that it could not be done. Unless I wanted a completely new number and to cancel my existing line, the only way out of it was to return the phone and cancel the order. The verizon rep was surprised that Amazon activated a phone that I had not yet received, but she also said that a lot of people make the same mistake I did. I wound up purchasing the phone through verizon and the verizon rep cancelled the phone plan that I signed up for on Amazon. I sent the new phone back and my account was credited.
I was eligible for an upgrade at the time, so when I saw 'with a new service plan', I understood it to mean a new two-year contract. That is definitely not the case, as I learned the hard way. It all worked out in the end, but it was a bit of a hassle.
Maybe you

Sorry, I accidentally sent the last post before I was done.
I was going to say maybe you do actually want to add a new phone with a new number and everything- in that case, the $50 Droid would probably be a great deal for you. If you just want to replace an existing phone, though, it won't work unless you want to change your number.

I wonder if this will be the case if upgrading to the Nexus?

I highly doubt it.

This was taken from amazon's web site under Droid....
"When you purchase your device with service from Amazon.com, we automatically pass along an instant discount from the carrier to you. This discount has been provided to you based on your agreement to (a) activate a new, or extend an existing, line of service for this device with the carrier, and (b) maintain this service in good standing for a minimum of 181 consecutive days. If you do not activate or extend a line of service in connection with this device, or if your service is canceled/disconnected before 181 consecutive days, Amazon.com will charge you $250 per device, plus applicable taxes. Amazon has a separate page for existing customers who want to upgrade. I just checked it and it looks like you can get the Droid for $50 there without adding a complete new line. Sorry, I should have checked that before I posted earlier.
