Blackberry has a "BB messenger" function that allows BB users to IM each other free. That seems like a more cost economical way to communicate so I don't have to get a text plan. Does Droid have anything similar? Thanks!

Yep -- Google Talk. It's Google's own IM, and better than BlackBerry Messenger, you can use it to talk to *anyone* who's also using Google Talk, not just other BlackBerry users.

Thanks! I suppose it's just a matter of convincing your friends to utilize the application. Can BB users use it too?

Google Talk is available in Blackberry AppWorld.
Only downside I've seen thus far is that BBMessenger let's you know when a message has been delivered & read. I haven't seen GTalk do that.
