Droid2 Gingerbread Update/Texting Freezes

Since the "update" on 9/3 (gingerbread, I presume), I'm having problems with texting. My phone freezes in the middle of typing a message, so I touch 'home' to unfreeze, then go back to texting my message only to find I have to start over. Anyone else having this problem? Very frustrating.

Do you see: Multi-touch keyboard? If you have not installed another keyboard program or use Swype, that is your keyboard.

My son's dorid2 returns to home whenever he types the word 'the'. When he returns to the text messaging ap the message he was typing is gone. No solution yet.

Hi there!

I would like to look further into this concern for you. Does it make a difference if you use the physical keyboard or the touch keyboard? Have you noticed if certain words or letters are causing it to freeze? Also, in the mean time, go into Settings>Applications>Manage Apps>All>Keyboard; then tap 'Clear Cache' and 'Clear Data' to fix this issue.

Please reply so I and the community can help out more!

Yes my phone has been doing the same thing. The update worked perfectly fine for about one week. On week 2, I noticed that when I typed "What " (capital W and a space after), the texting application would freeze, and I'd have to go back to the home page. When I retured to text, the entire message would be gone. Then I noticed that when I used Yahoo Messenger, my phone characters would stop showing up, then eventually an error message saying that the "conversation applicationi for yahoo messenger has failed" and i'd have to force it close. Once again, when I returned, the entire message would be gone. Yesterday, the yahoo messenger will not allow me to type more than 2 words. And my text messaging will freeze after any word that starts off underlined (I tried turning off autocorrect, but nothing has changed). This is ridiculous. Is there a way to "down-date" because this upgrade is ridiculous. I JUST got a phone that worked after 4 replacements. Now that I finally got a phone to work, this update has ruined it. Oh, one more thing, when I type in my browser, I have no problems. It is only for conversation based applications.

OMG!!!!! I found "Multitouch Keyboard", cleared the data....and all is well again!! THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!!!!

You are awesome! This fixed my phone.

I was texting, and everytime I would type between 1 to 3 words it would lock up and freeze. I would have to hit the home button, go back in and try again. I was able to use my voice recognition tool, but sometimes that defeats the convinence of texting on the keyboard. So glad I found this post and solution. It really helped me!

I have a similar problem. Mine seems to freeze whenever I hit the space bar or any of the puncuation marks especially "." Sometimes my keyboard even stays frozen on the screen. I've been using my swype keyboard and it works fine but I prefer my Multi-touch Keyboard. When I go to clear the Cache there is nothing in there to clear but I can clear the data....will I lose anything important or mess anything up if I do that, though? It's the only thing I have not tried yet to fix it.

mine also worked fine until week e. freezes with words you or your. cache cleared...will try clear all data to see if this works.

Multi-Touch Keyboard>Clear Data did the trick for me. Been banging my head for almost 2 days.

Clearing data in default messaging & Handcent didn't do the job that I saw on another forum.

I updated my phone the night before my wedding and as I was on my way to my honeymoon, I noticed that when texting or emailing, if I typed "I" and put a space after it, it would freeze my keyboard, the texting/email program, and cause my screen to go gray, then go back to the home screen. It was the same when I used the touch screen. My husband and I couldn't figure out the issue. We went to a Verizon store the next morning. A new phone was sent to my house (that I had no access to until after I got back home from my honeymoon) that was supposed to fix the problem, as I was told it was keyboard hardware failure. Once I got back from my honeymoon and got the new phone set up, I update it, and start having the SAME PROBLEM within a day of the update. I could not believe that 2 phones have had the same hardware failure and the only change I made both times was updating the phone. I decided to do some research before I went to a Verizion store again and see this thread. Now I feel stupid. Oh well. At least I know better now, right?

Hello Norvon,

No clearing the data in the keyboard application will not cause you to lose any text messages. It clears any stored keystrokes from the application. Examples of this would be stored words or abbreviations.

Go to market and download the gingerbread keyboard. This should fix all your problems without dealing with all the **bleep**

I didn't find "Keyboard", but I did find "Multitouch Keyboard". Cleared it's data cache and THAT seemed to do the trick.

Also went for the Gingerbread Keyboard app......will see how THAT goes.

I have the same problem. My phone won't let me type anything into a text or update facebook, etc. I use the physical keyboard for typing. I also do not see the keyboard in manage apps. It is not a keyboard issue, as when I try to type, it force closes or goes to google search or the home page. Sometimes when I return to the text message, it is still on the screen but won't let me send, I have to remove and replace battery.

I november of 2010 i bought the droid2. Everything was fine and dandy for almost 6 months. After six months the phone slowly began to give me a number of problems. It would swipe through home screens on its own, it would call/text people in my phone. It wouldnt let me hear a call i was on, and it would browse the internet on its own (these are just a few of the issues i was having). Atleast once a month, for about 5 months, i would factory reset my phone, because that is what the people on the 800 number would tell me. Even in the store the response was more than likely not, "Just reset it." Fianlly when my droid had crashed an burned I went to the store, showed them exactly what was happening, and they FINALLY called in for a new one for me. I was given the driod2global (this was in august/september of 2011).......

In the beginning the was fine. It is now december of 2011 and I have had nothing but trouble for the past 2 months. I have tired everything. I had the same issues as everyone else did after the update way back when. After calling verizon about 6 times, and them not knowing how to fix it, but rather gave me the run around about how it could be a number of things, I finally was told to call motorola for a new SD card because they believed that the phone itself was not damaaged,. but it was probably my sd card. I got the new card, sent out the old one, and the problems did not cease.

I went to my local verizon store last week and the services person told me it was the word prediciton that was messed up from the update. He turned it off, and it was like a i had a new phone. It is now a week later, and my work prediction continues to stay off, and yet my phone continues to freeze. I dont know about everyone else, but i am absolutely tired of this phone. I honestly cannot deal any longer.

While i would be more than happy to say it is my fault the phone is ruined or messed up, but i cant even do that. A friend of mine with the exact same phone, has had the exact same issue. Obviously there is something wrong with the phone. I am not going down without a fight about this phone, i can tell you that much.

I am having many of the same problems. I also went to Market to download gingerbread keyboard......cannot find it.........total frustation! cannot finish a text w/o starting over. have turned off word prediction....maybe I SHOULD go to iPhone!

I have had this problem for a few weeks now. and factory resets work for maybe a week tops its **bleep** me off becuase it freezes when i am texting and hit the period comma or spacebar and it doesnt matter if its on the touchscreen or on the slide out keyboard.

i am tired of the factory reset because i have to reinstall everything over and over again

is the a solid solution to this cause i have tried just about everything except smashing the phone into the wall

I have been having the same problem and it has been driving me totally nuts. I restored defaults twice, thinking it was an app that was causing it. I even called tech support and they said to restore defaults and see if it was a hardware problem or if it was an app causing it. I finally broke down and took it to the Verizon store and the guy said, "Oh, yeah, ever since they upgraded the OS, you have to turn off the word prediction or it does that."

SIMPLE fix! Just go into Settings>Language & Keyboard>Multi-touch keyboard and then uncheck Next Word Prediction.

That's it. Don't restore defaults, clear cache, or any of that other stuff. Simple, works immediately.

Hello there, popochas182! Did you try the steps as suggested as above.

Settings>Language & Keyboard>Multi-touch keyboard and then uncheck Next Word Prediction.
