DroidX not recognized by Computer

My wife and I have identical DroidX's, with identical settings, although we have a few different apps.  Hers connects to my laptop, but mine does not.  I get the message: "USB device Not Recognized..."   The problem obviously is not the USB drivers on the computer; nor the cable, nor the settings on the phones.  It seems to me that my phone's operating system must be corrrupted.  Does anyone have any ideas?  My phone, BTW, will charge when connected by USB to the charger plug.  Are there USB drivers on the phone that can be changed?

BTW I have the latest system updates on my phone, and they are identical to those on my wife's.

After you plug yours in, do you see the Notification icon at the top that it's connecting??  And if you pull down the top bar, do you have "how to connect" options - like "Connect for USB Mass Storage" or "Charge Only"??  If you do, make sure you're selecting "USB MASS STORAGE" ..

Just a guess on my part, but if the two Droid are identical except for a FEW APPS, my guess is that one of those apps are messing up your connection. My suggestion, of course, is to remove these different apps and see what happens. If it then works, add the apps back ONE AT A TIME until you reinstall the one that is messing up your USB connection. Then remove that apps (or apps) permanently.

an much easier method to prove/disprove a 3rd party app is causing the problem would be just to boot into SAFE MODE and try to connect via USB ...
