Dropping 3G network after gingerbread (android 2.3.3) update

Well ever since I updated my Droid X to Android version 2.3.3 I am experiencing period loss of the 3G network and the only solution seems to be to restart the phone. Many of the Android forums are reporting this same issue. Are others here experiencing this issue and is anyone aware of a fix?

Thank you skgee for your inquiry. I am not showing this as a known issue since the software update. That doesn't mean that other people aren't having this issue, but that it is not a common problem. Have you tried turning off your data and back on? Do you have any third party battery applications installed? I have seen some of these apps that periodically turn off the data on the phone while not being used. Try a few basic things first like pulling out your battery with the phone still on, leave out for 30 seconds. Make sure all your data settings are turned on by going to Settings>Data Manager>Data Delivery. If you are still having this issue, the last step I would recommend is a factory reset.

Both my Droid X and my girlfriend's X are having the same issue since the 2.3.3 update. Before they were both fine. Now 3G comes and goes. Rebooting, removing the battery will resolve it temporarily, but the issue returns.

I have also experienced the issue were I cannot make or receive a call. Once again rebooting temporarly fixes the issue, but it continues to return.

We never had an issue before the update to Gingerbread.

My wife now has an X2 because this issue could not be resolved on the X.

I understand your discontent. I see that a soft reset (battery pull) resolves the issue temporarily. As I researched this issue, I learned that a Factory Reset has resolved the issues outlined on post for other customers. Please keep in mind that performing a factory reset will remove ALL data including the Google account, system data, application data, application settings, and downloaded applications. Data/Media stored in your SD memory card will not be affected.

As I researched this issue, I learned that a Factory Reset has resolved the issues outlined on post for other customers. Please keep in mind that performing a factory reset will remove ALL data including the Google account, system data, application data, application settings, and downloaded applications. Data/Media stored in your SD memory card will not be affected.

Thanks for the info Antonio. I ended up doing the factory reset and it's been working fine ever since.

Verizon customer service walked me through it, but said they had not heard of such a problem.

I had the same problem, among others after the upgrade. Took my phone to VZW store, they performed a Factory Reset, and now my phone drops 3G coverage. Had to reboot it this morning, in fact. So, the factory reset obviously doesn't 'permanently' fix the problem...... I'm inclined to believe, because of this and other problems, there was/is a problem with the upgrade itself.....

Andi4GOP, sssshhhhhhh, you can't say that here (that anything is wrong with gingerbread).

Seriously, the same thing started on my phone after the update. I've tried all the troubleshooting ideas EXCEPT FOR resetting without re-installing any apps.

But, I've read other people have even tried that.

You are not alone on this issue. My wife has a Droid X (I am still stuck on the OG Droid) and she has had this issue since the GB update and we contacted VZW and they sent us a replacement and it has the same issue. Before we called VZW we tried a factory reset and that didn't help. To give you an idea of how many are having this issue, there are at least two threads on the Motorola site about the issue:

There is also rumors of a follow up update that is due soon (sometime this week I hope). I am going to contacting VZW to let them know that the replacement phone did not fix the issue and that I am willing to wait to see if the new update resolves the issue, if it does not I am going to request they let my wife get a different, but similar phone. She is 8.5 months pregnant and the last thing I want is for her to not be able to make calls when the big moment comes.

Sorry I had started my last post earlier today and some of you have posted since. It is not an issue with GB. As I said I have an OG Droid and I have it running Cyanogenmod 7(A custom Gingerbread ROM) and it works beautifully. I think the problem is related to MOTO Blur and the fact that Motorola customizes their version of Android significantly from the stock google version.

I have actually had this issue before Gingerbread. I still get a drop to 1x once in a while, but not quite as often.

I have found that turning airplane mode on for about a minute or so, then turning it back off, wait a minute for everything to turn on, sync to the tower etc, solves this problem 99% of the time. I also do this if my apps say there is no network connection and the phone shows 3g.

it seams like sometimes the 3g radio loses sync to the tower for some reason. Most of the time, my problem is environmental, ie location of the nearest tower in relationship to my office is the culprit. When I was moved to the top floor from almost the basement floor, it has also improved. But I still get loss of 3g about once every other week.

I'm also having this problem, I find it has gotten progressively worse. I didn't have this problem immediately after my update to gingerbread and the only thing that send to resolve it is to shut my phone down and restart it.

I have done quite a bit of searching on the web about the issue and nothing resolves it except restarting the phone. Then you get a few days before it looses the connection again. If I do find a resolution I will post it here. I have contacted Verizon and Motorolla all with no resolution.

at first I just went with the reboot, but it still kept happening, then I went with the battery pull, just like the reboot it seemed to have correct the random network loss but it didn't, FINALLY I got really fustrated and went with a factory reset, which only seemed to have postponed the problem for a day.

I'm really disapointed by the Gingerbread update which seems linked to the issue and I jumped on VZW website in order to get in contact with customer service, not to be on a message board with others in the same boat while being told this isn't a recognized problem.

Come on, enough of these type of responses. Take some time and look at the Motorola Owner's forums .... these and many other issues have been well documented for nearly 10 weeks.

Start with this thread, and continue to browse the rest of the threads. How can VZW be hiding their head in the sand on these issues?

I HATE my DX now, even though it was the BEST phone on the market before this poorly released update! I am living up to my end of the contract - where is VZW! This is a shame.

Directing your dissatisfaction towards Moto, Google, app developers....now you will be on the right track.

GB, as much as I dislike it, isn't entirely to blame, just part of a system that needs some changes made to it. A long, complicated story, that just starts arguments........

While I do appreciate your attempt to deflect blame AWAY from VZW, please keep in mind they approve software and firmware updates to phones on their system. I am sure the vast majority of the problems sit in the lap of Moto and their Motoblur,but VZW cannot walk away from this scott free from this catastrophe. Sorry.

Honestly not looking for an argument, just a fix ... 10 weeks of a crummy phone are enough!

This does not work always. I continue to have the same problem on my Droid X, and I've performed two resets with the system set not to restore applications. The wife's X keyboard would freeze on the screen when trying to enter an SMS message and the only way to resolve that was to turn the phone off and then back on... and it also had a reset performed on it. Solved her problem by getting her a new phone. None of these problems were present with Froyo, just after Gingerbread came out. Poor quality control apparently on the OS testing.

The ironic thing is what that person failed to notice is, in 90% of my "hot shot" posts, I agree with what they are saying. Just not the ranting way they are coming across.

Back to the question and a reply you made earlier in the thread. Yes, the 3G dropping out was something I also noticed pre-GB, though insignificant because it would always come back on.

I always attributed it to cell tower strength. Post-GB, a reboot is required to reestablish the 3G connection.

Hopefully, a fix for this will be included in the patch. THAT would be helpful, not trading insults. Agreed.

I have a similar issue, but it has been going on for about a month, before the 2.3.3 update, with both my Droid X and my new Droid X2. When I connect to the internet with my data package, after a minute or so, I go from a 3G signal to a 1x signal. If I disconnect from the internet, my signal will go back to a 3G within a minute. What gives?

I am having this issue with my Droid X2 as well. I just switched from T-Mobile to Verizon a few days ago and have noticed this as well. Everytime I make a call from my house or I recieve a call it drops from full 3G bars to 2 bars of 1x then the calls drops. Data doesn't want to connect sometimes as well. I called customer Care and was told to go back to verizon before my 14 days is up because it could be the phone. I'd hate to return the phone if its only a software issue that can be fixed. Any suggestions?

Return it now. Fix has been promised for 11 weeks and counting. Wait until the fix comes (if it comes) then get the phone. The DX and DX2 are/will be great again AFTER THE FIX.

I went to the Verizon Wireless store where I purchased the phone from yesterday and spoke to the guy that sold me the phone and he said it's not the phone that's causing the issue he said it's because of the Verizon Strike going on right now why we are experience dropped calls and service interruptions and he said it's happening to a lot of people's service with different phones. He said things should be back to normal in a week or so. Not sure what to believe at this point because I'm really disappointed with Verizon and had better expectations which is why I switched from T-mobile to begin with.

The strike is against Verizon Landlines, not wireless. There can be some intermittant wireless problems that could be attributed to the strike, but I think that this problem is not one of them.

Remember, the people at the store make money by selling phones. Most of them do not see the value in customer service after the sale. My local store used to have one dedicated person doing troubleshooting, handling returns, and the basic 'My phone doesn't do this' type questions. She was very good, About a year ago, they put her back on the floor with everyone else, and now that store does not have a dedicated hardware/software issue person. I talked with her while she was helping us get my wife a new/refurbished Droid 2 because of restarting when trying to make a call. This person doesn't mind being on the floor, but she would rather be doing the service side only.

I don't see the issues with loss of connections attributed to the strike since these issues have been going since before the strike. Of course there could be more instances now but since the strike is for landlines service I'm not putting my bet on it. On the other hand I have noticed that I experience the loss of connection in association with my wifi,if I leave my wifi on I will lose connection but if I turn it off I don't seem to have the issue.

Whether that person was misinformed, jumped to that conclusion, or is an outright (less than truthful person), that explanation does not make sense. The timing of this issue originating is late May, early June. The strike (even if it did involve the wireless division of Verizon) started about a week ago. I wouldn't let this person sell you anymore phones, or fairy tales.

At first i thought it was the area i live in but the lady on the phone said I'm between 2 towers and my area shows excellent 3G coverage in Kempsville area Virginia Beach VA so I dont know what to do at this point. The call quality has been terrible as well. My roomate has an original droid and doesn't have this problem but I'd hate to reurn the phone just to get the same phone with the same exact issue unless there is some kind of fix going to be implemented. I take it this is only happening to a limited amount of Droid X2 and not all of them?

Have you tried calling *228? That is a tower signal reset sort of function. Choose option 2.

Your issue seems a bit different. Does your 3G connection only re-establish after you restart your phone (turn it off and back on)? Or, are you just talking about the 3G and signal strength fluctuating?

The original post was referring to an issue with the X that is occurring when 3G is lost and can only be re-estabished by restarting the phone.

Honestly, I haven't noticed if this is also an issue with the X2. Did you purchase your X2 with Gingerbread installed? Or, maybe the better way of asking that is, did you install the update?

Speaking for the X, this issue only began on my X after I installed GB. A purported fix for this and other issues is in the works and the date being thrown out there (by a Verizon employee in this forum) is "mid-Aug".

Now, there is the usual dog and pony show of performing a hard reset, clearing your cache, etc. Try the *228 idea, first.

Well after talking to my roomate he said its the verizon signal extender that is causing the issues. I dont know why he would continue to use it if it's causing calls to drop which would also explain why it only happens at the house ..... He said it causes the calls to drop if someone calls because its connecting to the extender or something like that but that doesnt make any sense to me.

Extenders are useful, but you're getting into a technical area others here will have to comment on. I've never used one. Hope you've gotten to the bottom of the issue, though.

I would venture that this is indeed a GB issue, and I can't fix the blame squarely on VZW/Moto/Google, but it's repeatable and a real issue since you get no real warning that you are off the air until you go to send a txt or make a call.

I have never just dropped the 3G connection, its always been a failure for the phone to restore the 3G connection after being on WiFi for an extended period of time. This has only occurred after the upgrade to GB and has held consistent through several factory resets. (FRs are a pain and should never be taken lightly nor recommended lightly). Cycling the power has consistently resolved the connection issue, but it is also a nuisance that we shouldn't have to undertake when we finally notice an issue exists.

I do hope a fix is on the way, 'cuz like others have said, I am happy with my X.

Check your phones for the OTA update. It has started to come out today.

I have installed it and it seems to have made my 3g connection a lot more solid. I have not seen a problem with 3g since the install (installed very early this morning).

@curtterp you are correct about .602 coming out last night. I wish there was an official list of what it fixes, I can see that swype has a lot better response now but I'm holding off my findings with the network since immediately after the update it was still randomly dropping

...on me (3G, wifi, cell coverage) I still lost all network while in a stationary spot multiple times. I've rebooted the phone to see if that'll help, crossing fingers

updated this morning so far so good no drops in service with my wifi left on, not going to count it as a fix until it continues to keep connected

Since my update yesterday morning, my 3g has only failed once, and that was in a fringe area at work. It looks like I might have lost signal, not related to the problem I was having before. The problems that I was having over the past week before the update, have gone away. Twitter on my X used to tell me a lot that network was unavailable. Last night, it did not fail once.

The update fixed my 3g dropping issue.
