I've tested the official builds (not leaked) and it is past 1Y and already on the EP2X build which are pretty final. Probably still Early fall however till it offcially goes out to everyone.
Yes it performs better the device was made for it. Yes it fixes major issues. Yes 4g (thank God) is stable. The official still has bloatware even if not as much. Verizon needs to remove that garbage and leave it an option. P.S> Netflix also performs better. As well as camera use.

I am really tempted to put this on my phone but I don't want to void the warranty. Hopefully Samsung/Verizon will get this rolled out soon.

Dear DC5,
Not really, I am afraid. Verizon lists 21 new and refurbished phones running the Android platform. Of these only two (Bionic and Xperia) are available today with Android 2.3, and the Droid 3 will be availabe September 16 with 2.3.
Having said that, I hope that the next OTA will be for 2.3.x for the Charge and will come soon. There are a lot of other Android Verizon phone users out there who are also waiting for this update, and many of them bought their phones well before the Charge was even available on Verizon. If they take these user groups in order of phone release, we may have to wait a little longer than a few days.

I thought that the Droid X, Droid X2, Droid 2, Droid 2 R2-D2, Droid 2 Global (got it, but now backing out w/ exchange encryption issues, should be back soon OTA), Droid Pro, Droid 3 (Soak test), Droid Incredible, Droid Incredible 2 all either have 2.3 Gingerbread or are getting it this month OTA??? I could be way off...but I thought all of these phones either currently have 2.3...or are getting it OTA within this month..or you can manually pull it down and not wait? This is most of their lineup for smartphones....only others smartphones I can think of are the Charge, Revolution, and Thunderbolt all running 2.2. I haven't seen any real rhyme or reason in their OTA updates to Gingerbread....maybe the different vendors go in order, but I have seen newer phones getting GB before older phones and some older phones getting it before newer. Verizon only seems to have the Samsung Continuum(EOL I believe), Samsung Fascinate (EOL), and the Samsung Droid Charge, so I would hope, especially since there have been well over 4 leaks of GB for the Charge, that we don't have to wait to much longer.

I was relying on the listing of specs for the various phones on the VZW website, so some of these may be out-of-date. I could also be way off, but I would think VZW would want to update the marketing materials for any phone that has been brought up to 2.3.x. I don't know where you are getting your intel that 2.3 is being pushed OTA to these phones this month...I don't read or listen to any other boards or blogs, because to me all rumors are the same...rumors.
I treat updates of the OS on this or any other smartphone the same as I do weather forecasts. If you want to know the weather, walk outside and look up. If you want to know if there is an OTA update for your phone, turn it on and look down.

Dear WCM,
I see....just checking the VZW website, going to each phones support page, I seem to find these 2.3 OS update pages for these smartphones.
Droid X (4.5.596.MB810) , Droid X2 (1.3.232.MB870), Droid 2 (4.5.601.A955), Droid 2 R2-D2 (4.5.602.A957), Droid 2 Global (4.5.607.A957), Droid Pro (4.5.4.XT610), Droid 3 (5.6.890.XT862), Droid Incredible (4.06.605.3), Droid Incredible 2 (2.18.605.4).
WCM, don't be afraid to dig deeper into the support pages. I understand it is easy to walk outside and figure out the weather by looking up, sometimes even looking down, but it seems that just turning on my smartphone and looking down does not always tell me when an update is going to arrive or what updates are already released over the air, but doing some research using my phone or PC sure does help

Thanks for the information. Good research. I stand corrected. But I am still sticking with my approach. Your research does nothing to tell when the OS update will occur for the Droid. I will still be looking down at my phone to tell when this occurs. Unless you can tell me...I think not.

Plenty of phones have a version of GB

As I said in my post in this thread on 9.9, I was corrected in my mistake as to how many phones have 2.3.x. I was relying on the description of each phone on the VZW website, whereas there was more current information about current available OS version on the support portion of the site for each of the phones.

Just got an early SDK dev tool sample for 4.0. From what I can see, it is a rehashed honeycomb with a much cleaner UI, and much more customizable, but the question is, will manufacturers leave it hat way or lock it.
THe nice thing is it really closes, flushes and manages memory much more efficient. At least if forced bloatware isn't todl to open every 6 seconds.

Houston,
Any idea if they are just planning on pushing ICS to the Charge rather than updating it to GB then? Is this why it is taking so long for this update to get to our phones? I know you said that they were finished with ep1w and past ep1y, and onto ep2....any word from anyone if they just might skip GB and roll out ICS since it is supposed to be out soon anyways?

While nobody knows anything for sure until it happens, it is extremely unlikely that they would skip GB for ICS. You just aren't going to see a major carrier roll in a newly-released OS. There is far too much risk; they need to wait for the bugs to get squashed in the OS before they even think about building a ROM for a specific device.
Momemtum seems to be moving towards an OTA release of GB before the month is out.

4.0 is an sdk default only in alpha , it is not carrier specific, does not contain radio drivers and other aspects, basically it is a test platform. However I personally do not like it and will stick with gingerbread. If 4.0 rolls out it will be some time. Samsung is pushing 2.3.4 on all their supproted devices first. Don't eexpect any offcial 4.0 phones or builds until well into 2012. The current sdk's are quarky as sin.
2.3.4 is slated for "FALL" 2011. Still no official OTA release date, even tho it is ready and complete from samsungs side.

I have it on my phone right now and it's a lot better than EE4 firmware. It transitions cleanly from 3G<->4G unlike EE4.
There is still an area where I am that still having signal issues where it drops out but Verizon has told me that the area is in bad need of getting a cell tower. The closest cell tower is about five miles away.
It did drop all service once today but that could be from them working in the area, they say that they are expanding 4g coverage in my area to cover more parts of the city so who knows if they have to take their towers offline to do so. The news states that by the 15th of this month I should be seeing 4g in more areas.

I test many of the beta's. Droid 2 and Droid 2 Global are in fact getting 2.3, however they have not outside of test forms. The charge is actually ahead of them on builds.
Droid 3 has it.

Verizon does not modify the ROM builds. It provides the manufacturer with requirements and then tests what its given. If something wrong, it goes back to the manufacturer.
VCast, the Verizon boot-up logos, etc.; are all put there by Samsung (in this case) per Verizon's specs.
