If "Mass" means just a few messages to be deleted, the other advice you've received is OK. If "Mass" deletion means the great majority of messages in the In box, the best thing to do is to get rid of the default email client.
That problem is one of many reasons I switched to K9 Mail. I switched from the default client to K9 Mail in the first week I had the Charge. It has worked well for me. Though it is not perfect, it is orders of magnitude better than the default. If I had to use the default client, I would have returned the Charge.
For mass deletions, the critical feature to me is that I can use one click and one touch to mark all messages in the In box. If I want to save a few, I just unmark those, then touch delete. (The major feature K9 lacks is a Save mailbox, but the default client doesn't have that either.)
