Email disappears after opening

On my dinc2 sometimes when I open certain emails on the mail client, the message displays for a few seconds then goes blank and it won't display again. I this doesn't happen to all emails.

Anyone seen this before an knows the cause and fix?

I posted a few weeks ago... having the same problem. I came across a proposed solution for something similar on another forum and tried it and so far it is working.

My Yahoo email account is set up as an IMAP account. When I added it to my phone the settings (incoming and outgoing) for Yahoo were automatically set for me. The solution I came across was to use the setting from Yahoo and override the automatic settings. In doing so, it deleted my old account, but installed the new one.... I didn't lose any emails and everything synced fine. I found that the difference between the automatic-filled settings and the settings from Yahoo was that the word "android" was in both my incoming and outgoing server settings (android.imap.mail.yahoo.com and android.smtp.mail.yahoo.com). I deleted the word "android" and continued with the setup. The emails in my inbox that previously had their contents disappear on my are now intact, even after opening them numerous times. I didn't have to change any other settings, other than removing "android" from the sequence. Below are the settings from Yahoo for setting up an IMAP account on a droid.

Incoming Server - imap.mail.yahoo.com
Outgoing Server - smtp.mail.yahoo.com
Incoming Port - 993 (requires SSL)
Outgoing Port - 465 (requires SSL)
Username: full email address (bill@yahoo.com)
Password: is the password you login to Yahoo! with

I know it's important to be able to view email on your smartphone device, and would be happy to assist!

Sounds as though the mail application cache and data needs to be cleared. This would delete cached files the app stores on your phone, and clearing data would clear all the data stored by the app. Once the mail application data is cleared you would just want to force another sync to bring your email data back to your device. I am including instructions for these steps below:

There its no clear days option for the mail application. This affects only certain emails.

Jpmunk, I have not heard of this as a known issue with this phone but it could be related to the email itself. What email provider are you using? Are you able to view any HTML emails? Do these emails appear on your computer? If you are using Outlook or a similar email client on your computer for these emails, make sure it is set to leave messages on the server. Just under this setting, there is a option to remove messages from the server after a number of days. Either make sure this is unchecked or extend the number of days.

I use yahoo. This only affects certain messages. I notice that the message displays until the remaining part of the email is downloaded and then of disappears.

I use Yahoo also and have not seen this issue. Are the emails still in your Yahoo inbox? Do they appear in the trash on the phone? Check to see if your phone is set to ask before deleting email. Open your Mail, press Menu, More, Settings, General Settings. Check Ask before deleting if it is not checked.

I just started having this problem today too. It seems to only be in my Yahoo email. The email appears in the list, I open it, the contents (actual email note) display, then the email contents... just the words disappear. The email still appears in my opened email list, but if I open it again there is nothing there... its empty. I have a droid incredible 2

After my original post, I spent a lot of time experimenting with this. I think that ,the issue is that the html is malformed in some emails and it displays correctly at first until the second part of the message is downloaded. My wife has the same phone and we looked at the same email and the problem was exactly the same. If i use the web browser or the yahoo mail app, there is no iasue. I think that the HTC mail client is just not tolerant of bad html.

There are some good ideas being tossed around here, and I'm sure everyone would agree that if it's a problem with the Yahoo! mail client or some type of security issue when receiving/viewing emails on multiple devices, the mail provider should be informed of the issue. I found an outside resource on the Yahoo! site while researching the issue (How to report a problem). This method informs the mail provider of trends and perhaps they can make adjustments to help rectify these issues.

From what it sounds like, the issue is specific to Yahoo! and should be troubleshot, tested, adjusted, and escalated to the mail host. Perhaps there are settings that can be adjusted on the account for optimal performance on the device.

Some other things to try:

1) Try to download a different mail retrieval client from the Market (just type email in the search box, and you'll get plenty of hits).

2) Try downloading the Yahoo! mail app from the Market to see if the errors persist there.

3) Ensure mail retrieval clients accessing the same account do not interfere with the email setup on your Android device. This

mainly happens when desktop/pc software accesses the same email account as the Android device.

Please reply with any new info, troubleshooting steps, or breaking news regarding this email situation.

I've done #1 - I used k9 mail and that works fine
I've done #2 - as mentioned in my post. That works fine too.
#3 doesn't sound relevant since I don't have desktop email downloading.

I am having a similar problem - have had this phone for over a month, now all of a sudden, certain emails will be blank, and others work/open fine. I have only one account, yahoo mail, and didn't really want to download a sepeate app for my mail since I only use the one account (as I have my gmail forwarded to my yahoo mail). I tried the Reset Application steps, but to no avail. Any additional guidance would be appreciated.

That worked! The funny thing is that I used to remove the android for a different reason. I must have gone back to the defaults at some point and didn't make the connection.

From what I can tell, there is some kinda script infecting the app from Yahoo! that trys to place a "news" link at the bottom of the email. Sometimes it reconfigures the e-mail and places the link within the graphic of the email itself! I have complained to Yahoo! since it plainly states "Powered by Yahoo!" in the thing. They are calling it Today (beta). Well, if its a Beta, let me opt out of it. And how DARE they put something in my e-mail that i essentially an advertisement. This has hurt the ability for me to do my work from the road. E-mail is personal.

I figured this out because, if you look at the bottom of your e-mails, there is the "Today" box with the link. If you scroll down quick, you can see the browser try to load it an choke as it redirects to Yahoo to get the link. I've managed to catch the download and stop it by pressing the gray bar with the stopwatch in it. It usually says "2k left to load" or something like that. When my e-mail has disappeared, it is when this "virus" is trying to load. This just started happening when this "today" thing started appearing on my e-mail. Can't figure out where it came from (no update that I am aware of).

I have contacted Yahoo! Mobile, but they have not as of yet replied. The e-mail said their volumeis very high with tech issues, This is probably why. About ready to switch back to my old reliable Blackberry from the Android {word filter avoidance}
with this issue, all the freaking ads, and the Carrier IQ stuff.

Forgot to add...what does this say about SECURITY when they allow this sort of thing to appear in your emails. Talk about easy to hijack!

I am having a similar problem. However I have noticed the e mail header will appear and the message is blank. this seems to occur when traveling outside my normal area. I have checked my online Yahoo account and the message content is available there. Any Suggestions?

What email provider are you having issues with? Is this something new or have you always had this issue with the email disappearing?

Have you checked to see if the email settings are correct on the device? Make sure you have the correct incoming and outgoing server for your email service provider. You can find the correct server settings for your email provider on their sites.

I have heard back from Yahoo! It IS their "best of the web" content that has flawed programming which disables the HTC Mail app from properly displaing HTML content. They did not even get the problem correct, as their is NO message sending mail, it is when it comes INTO the IMAP app! I am attaching their response below:

Instead of any help, or reporting to their software people, they try to sell me a $20-a-year premium e-mail service. Unaccpetable. They can and they will shut this off, as it only effects IMAP, not web based. Just to get a few clicks or page counts!!!!! This is LOW, and this is how you alienate loyal users to defect to G-Mail! MORONS!!!!

Anyway, there is no way to shut it off. I would suggest and angry mail campaign to these folks, as the more people who complain, the better the chances they will see the error of their ways. They are causing my mobile device I have paid for from not operating properly on software that is not even theirs.. I have already written to HTC to see if they can do something legally to Yahoo! for ruinin their mail app or to simply block it. A "cease and desist" might work.

I guess Yahoo! simply does not understand that e-mail is now like postal mail. you mess with people's PERSONAL mail, you are in serious trouble. That is a line you do not cross!
