I recently updated my software, and now whenever I turn the phone on, it instantly freezes. Nothing works, not even the clock. When I press the power button to put it into sleep mode, a blank screen reappears where only the top bar is visible. It is impossible to turn the phone off with the power button...only removing the battery works.
What's going on with this?

Hello,
I understand your frustration regarding the screen on your Droid X. Thank you Cody21 for your suggestion to clear the cache. Have you attempted these steps? I have listed them below.
Wiping cache partition - cures many ills and is better to start with this than a full Factory Reset.
- Power off
- Power On Holding Home Key
- When the Android with Exclamation Point Shows up Press BOTH Volume keys
- Use Volume Keys to navigate to "wipe cache partition" and tap power button to select
- Wait for it to finish and select reboot system
If this does not resolve the issue for you, please complete a master reset. I have listed these steps below.
Please note: The master reset erases all data from your phone, including your Google or other email account settings, system and application data and settings, and downloaded applications. It resets your device back to it's original settings. It will not erase current system software and bundled applications, or files stored on an optional installed memory card, such as music or photos. For this reason, please make sure that the data on your device is backed up.
- Press and hold the Power button then select Power off. If the device isn't responding to input, remove / replace the battery.
- Press and hold the Home key then press power button to turn on.
- Press the Power button while holding Home.
- From the Android Recovery screen (exclamation point with an android figure), press Volume Up / Down simultaneously.
- Select wipe data / factory reset then press the Power button.
- Select Yes -- delete all user data then press the Power button. Reset process to may take approximately 1 minute.
- Ensure reboot system now is selected then press the Power button.
If you have any further issues, please feel free to send me a private message. I will be happy to assist you further.
Have a great day!

I would start by doing the more benign "WIPE SYSTEM CACHE" .. it has fixed issues for many people. If THAT doesn't work (and you're confident it isn't a rogue APP casing your problems) a "WIPE / FACTORY RESET" might be your next step.
Wiping cache partition - cures many ills and is better to start with this than a (gulp) full Factory Reset.
- Power off
- Power On Holding Home Key
- When Andy with Exlamation Point Shows up Press BOTH Volume keys
- Use Volume Keys to navigate to "wipe cache partition" and tap power button to select
- Wait for it to finish and select reboot system
Facgtory Reset:

Did you try booting into SAFE MODE? If you are successful in doing so, your freezing is likely due to a 3rd Party APP and time to start uninstalling things. to get into SAFE MODE:
- Power Off
- Press & Hold the Menu Button, continue to hold it
- Press power up buttong - continue to hold Menu button
Phone will eventually come up sayign SAFE MODE in lower left corner. test & uninstall stuff.
power off/on as usual to get out of Safe Mode.
good luck

I can't do one thing with this phone. It frozen as soon as the phone turns on it freezes. I've tried doing what was suggested and no lil Andy comes up with an exclamation point. I can't even hit the home or power key to power off. It only turns off when battery is taken out. If I press a button or even try to go to settings it goes black. How do I get around that?

Looks like there is no hope for this phone. The phone is still frozen in safe mode and I just tried to do a system wipe by following those steps.
Tried to do number 3 and the screen just blinks off and on. No exclamation point comes up. Guess I will be making a trip to the VZW store. Thank you for your help guys the article is very useful.

yea, too bad ... sounds like you actually have a hardware issue with the phone.
