Factory Restore before accepting update...

Fortunately, I'm at home this week, so Thursday night just before I crash for the night, I plan to restore the phone to its original out of the box state before I do the update. Although I'm one of the hated group of people that has NEVER had a problem with an update, but just to be safe and set a good example for the kids watching at home..

I would agree that this is the wises decision to minimize issues before hand... I am backing up my data now so if it does hit I will be ready..

I don't see a need for that. I've never had a problem receiving an OTA update.
As of now, I don't want the update anyway. I've read about things not working for multiple people using the leaked version. I'll way until the offical release and see what others have to say before I switch. My X is working exactly the way I want right now I'd hate to update and lose functionality until another fix comes along.

Some dont have issues afer update but from results from Froyo update seem to prove that most issues a user has with device after updating usually came from unsupported apps or setting that carried over from previos OS... Best solution is to cut off the possible issue before starting, but each to its own.
And as for problem with apps with leak build was usually from unsupported apps because developers havent really made a number of apps GB capatible because only a small hand full of devices has the update but I only had a few apps not work and after a message to developer I was back up without issues.

Does anyone know what will happen if we're running a launcher? I have both Launcher Pro and ADW. Will our home screens be reset and lose where our icons are and have to redo everything again?

Under normal situations you shouldnt loose settings but if this is a concern, you can backup the theme under the settings menu on ADW and LP...

OK, just to stand up for the other side of this debate, I am of the camp that we should NOT have to do a Factory reset to receive/install an OS update. I never did this with FROYO - zero isses after that upgrade and still running flawlessly. As I see it, this DX is a computer. e.g, When you receive updates for your Windows computer, do you do a "FULL WIPE/RESET" before receiving any of the Service Pack updates? I mean, they are always pretty huge as well. Personally, I view GB as an OS *update* .. feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
Now if I have problems AFTER the GB update, then I will first proceed to do some testing to see if it is an APP-specific issue; ala SAFE MODE. (I will expect that some APPS are ill-prepared for GB.) If I can't figure out the issue, then and only then will I proceed to a FACTORY RESET. But to do so as a preparation for GB just seems like a lot of work and uneccesary reconfiguration of my APPS and screens.
Respectfully, just my 2 cents ... YMMV

Actually Cody I beg to differ, if you change OS it is always wiser to wipe a system before updating, if you are on Windows XP and was updating to Windows 7 you will run into major issues because there is a large amount of apps that wont be supported or compatible and a number of hardware that will normally act up.. This is why any knowledgeable tech will not suggest a upgrade installation to a totally different OS.
Also as for GB being just a OS Upgrade this is a lite way to view this update because it is written on a modified code and design, I have decompiled one of the leak builds and the base principle is there but the structure is a different design. They are running a different Bootloader and the Kernal has been modified to secure a few security vulnerabilities that has been brought to light. So I wouldn't say it is just a update its more like a upgrade.
How many times have you upgraded OS on a PC and all programs installed still function correctly?

We agree on that aspect. If I were to upgrade to a new OS, ala Windows 7 from XP, YES -- a full wipe/format is the best approach. But not for a (large) Service Pakc update, ala SP1, SP2, or SP3 ...

I see your point. But like I said, unless the developers from MOTO actually come out and actually recommend a full wipe, I just feel it may be a lot of extra work for minimal (if any) gain when in fact the real issues may be APP-related (e.g., not yet GB compliant). So like FROYO, my approach will be a 'wait and see' one whereby I'll just upgrade and only do the RESET proceudre after the fact if things go to hell in a hand basket. I guess we'll see which approach of ours works and share the results.

Thanks Wildman! I backed them up. I started using ADW the other day just to try it out, and I don't like it as much as LP. The icon themes are awesome though. I wish I could use those with LP. I love the how you can customize the docks with LP, but you can't with ADW..

And you obviously missed my statement about never having problems with an update of any kind...

"And you obviously missed my statement about never having problems with an update of any kind...
So, Cody, was I wrong to make the initial post and express my view on this matter?"
-------------------------------------------------------
gerio - I only came into this "discussion" 7 deep into it and was only expressing my opinion, like the others before me.
I think there are 2 camps in this discussion; those who firmly believe you should RESET-before-updating, and those that don't believe that. I just happen to be in the latter group as expressed in my opinions above. I see WHY some prefer to do so, but it just seems like a lot of work (for some people - especialy for the less-tech-savy ones here) if there are no problems with the update. I value/respect your opinion.
take care.

I understand and agree that the extra work may not be needed especially for "Less Tech-Savy Users" but from what I have learned that the extra work can be worth it because it beats having a user load the device and complain about issues for weeks because they refused to acknowledge a reset as a solution.
My thought is if I can isolate possible issues before hand it is best to go that direction... Oh well time will tell..
