Freezing problems, battery problems, screen blanking for no reason

I have had a Droid 2 Global for several months and have a number of beefs about it:
1) Freezing and blanking issues
- The screen freezes up within a minute after unlocking. I have to hit the power button to lock, then unlock and after that it's fine until my phone is locked again for a while.
- When I am laying down with the phone facing down at me, I unlock the phone to make a phone call and the moment the screen unlocks it goes blank and locks again. I have to have the phone facing up, not down to make calls. Very strange.
- I am concerned about doing a factory reset because I have read stories about people losing contacts and having problems re-downloading paid apps.
2) The Droid 3 came out shortly after I got the Droid 2 - wish I had waited because I tried my friend's Droid 3 and it's amazing and so much faster than the Droid 2. The Verizon rep never told me there was a newer model on the way. Now I am strapped with a crappy phone unless I want to pay full price or wait a year.
3) The battery life is appalling. Just moderate usage drains the battery and there is little control over background data usage. I realize that many people advocate task killers, however I have seen articles that say it is not needed. There are apps that wake up and call out to the Internet and I can't control it.
I am trying out Juice Defender and that seems to be helping but when I unlock the phone to use it and Juice Defender re-activates my 3G, it takes SO LONG before the phone re-establishes the data connection.
The rep in the store I visited was indifferent and unhelpful and said "Sorry, there's nothing I can do to help you".
I so regret having gone with this phone especially when I see the problems others have. With Verizon's contract lock I am stuck unless I want to pay huge prices for phones.
I think it is iPhone for me next time and perhaps another service provider.
