Freezing

I have had my Droid Bionic since September 9th and experienced freezing twice in a two week period. In both instances I laid my phone down for several minutes and come back to find the screen blank and the lock screen inaccessible.  I end up having to pull the battery to get the phone to reboot. I had the original Droid for 2 years and I've never had this type of issue. I have a full charge on my battery and I wasn't using the same application when it froze on me.  I called Verizon support today and they are supposed to call me back tonight to troubleshoot the issue.  I think there is an issue between the Bionic hardware and OS.

Has anyone else had this experience with their Droid Bionic?

I had the same issue.  I am trying something that so far seems to be working.  Under settings, display, screen timeout.   Set it to never timeout.  You will have to remember to hit the button when you are done using the phone to blank the screen and save battery.  I have been good for 4 days like this.  Before it would freeze every 2 days for me.  Still testing but maybe on to something...

I have had the same problem.  Got my droid bionic  3 weeks ago and  now that the  14 days is up, it has froze up at least 3 times.  I think they would put a fix out for this

Mine was doing this a lot and I waited til it was locked up and took it to a vzw store. They sent me out another one. So far I have had it for a week and it has not had the BSOD. I hope it is fixed.

hey BC123 - have you had any BSODs since you last posted on the 10th?  i am trying your experiment (auto screen timeout disabled), and i've been good for about ten days now which is a record for my phone...

having to keep the screen from timing out is a hack repair. Unaccepable for an expensive phone to have to hack it to not fail repeatedly. Im returning it. I dont hear Ipod users complaining about such serious issues!

Had the same problem. Talked to verizon tech, suggested a phone reset. Talked to a motorola tech, suggested turning off automatic brightness. Needless to say, none of this worked. Just received a replacement 2 days ago. Seems to work fine so far, time will tell.

I have set my screen lock to never turn on but I won't know if that works for another couple of weeks. I never received a callback from Verizon's tech department of course but hopefully Motorola will get enough calls on the freezing issue and put out a fix. I was told on my original call with VZ tech that my other issue of not automatically failing over from 3G to 4G LTE was a known issue. The workaround instead of rebooting your phone is to turn on and off the airplane mode. Motorola is supposed to be working on a fix for that issue.

it's called a BSOD - "black screen of death".  if you hunt around, you will see a lot of reports on this in every forum out there.  probably the best source of information is this thread in the Motorola Support Forums (22,595 Views 448 Replies).  the worst part about this problem is that the phone doesn't work at all when it's locked up - you will not receive any calls or texts (and you won't even know it's locked up until you try to wake the screen).

my Bionic has been doing it a lot, and it's really annoying.  i wish i had exchanged it for a new one while i was still within the first 14 days, now i guess i am going to have to exchange it for a refurb (aka, somone else's problem).

and by the way, i have performed three factory resets already on this phone, it doesn't fix the problem so don't waste your time

It is great that some of you have found a workout for the black screen issue.  I personally have a Droid Bionic, and I have noticed this issue happening 1-2X per week as well. I know the phone doesn't power down because my LED notification light still blinks. What I did want to share is that I researched the issue with our software team, and I found they have already escalated the issue to Motorola. There is a scheduled MR1 (Maintenance Release Number 1), but they haven't communicated an exact ETA on it. It is supposed to fix the black screen issue along with some other hiccups that have been reported.

Thanks for hanging in there on this one. In the meantime, feel free to use a workaround or pull the battery.

Regards,

Yes! I have had the same problem, and its a bug. I am not going to wait for an update, and cant afford to lose calls while the phone is unknowingly in a black screen lock, which the only fix is removing the battery!

 Im returning the phone today
